    Hey guys,
Does anyone know HP/Compaq's warranty on laptops. My fiancee accidentally dropped my laptop and it chipped off a chunk of the casing. The laptop itself is perfectly fine. Does anyone know if this will void the warranty?

The reason that I ask is that now I think the harddrive might have gone out on me. I'm going to try to reinstall windows or linux later today and see if it fixes the laptop (it won't boot even to grub now.) It was booting and working fine after it was dropped. What do you guys think are the chances of them repairing/replacing the laptop vs telling me that I'm out of luck because of the chip?

How long has she had the notebook. The normal HP warranty is one year and it does not cover accidental damage as in this case. Depending on how long you have had the notebook you can always call HP up and extend and enhance your warranty for more years and more coverage. Hard drives fail all the time so you may be able to call them up and just say the hard drive is making a clicking noise and will not boot, and they may send you a replacement hard drive right out.

It's actually my laptop. I've only had it for a few months. I'm going to try and call HP and tell them about the harddrive and see if they will replace it (without mentioning the chipped case...)
    Thanks for the tip!!
