I have had this HP Compaq nc8430 for about 2 years. Currently it has a Intel Core Duo T2400 CPU.

I recently bought an Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7600 CPU for it. When i install the Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7600 the laptop will not boot in fact I turn it on and i can hear the fan running but that is all it is doing. The screen is black and it seems to be stuck. The light below the Disk icon turns solid yellow.

When i put the Intel Core Duo T2400 back in it boots and runs fine.

I was wondering if there is some switch or some trick to getting the processor to work.

    Some additional information

I got this information from a search of the product number on each of the CPU's
    Intel Core Duo T2400 - http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL8VQ.html
    Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7600 - http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL9SD.html

this is the store and product i purchased

Are you using the latest BIOS version?

Even if you make it boot, be prepared to reinstall Windows.
I have a nx9420, and after upgrading to C2D the fan started acting strange.
After reinstall it was all fine again tho.

If possible, check with another computer to verify if the processor is working at all.

Generally speaking, HP BIOS whitelists components in their computers. Wifi, CPU, TV tuners, etc. Meaning, if it wasn't a configurable option for the model during the time it was being sold, the component isn't supported in the BIOS and therefore will not work. There are undocumented exceptions such as installing more RAM than than the specified maximum.

For your model, the only CPU options available were T2300, T2400, T2500, T2600. And those are the only ones supported in the BIOS.

So then as an undocumented compatibility, only the Meroms with 2MB L2 cache will work.

    T7600 has 4MB L2 cache.

You're right. I had the first edition of the Service manual which only listed the T2xxx's.

It's either a dead CPU or the OP forgot to connect some other component when reassembling the unit after CPU upgrade.

I really have no other way of testing the CPU. About the only other thing i can do is get a hold of another 7600 and see if it works, but that is kind of silly.

I was wondering if there was a jumper setting or something else i might have missed.

Thank you all for the advice!

    No jumpers.

BTW, you might have forgotten to turn the lock down on the CPU socket when you reassembled it. That could be the cause of your issue. I've made that mistake once upgrading a notebook's CPU.

Ok i thought about what 2.0 said about the lock. So i tried installing the CPU again and this time i payed ver close attention to every thing i did. I made sure that every thing was hooked up (plugged in the fan :) ) and made sure the CPU was locked down.

I got the same thing as before No Boot, just the black abyss!!!

I am at a point of believing this is a bad processor. Wish i had a way to test it though.

You're running out of options, but have you tried clearing CMOS?
Remove power cable, battery, and the small battery next to the RAM, look here.
Wait for at least 15 minutes, then put it together again. Hope for the best, expect the worst. :D
