Hi, my first post here, I am on many car forums, but have signed up on this one because i just acquired a hp nx8220 laptop from my older brother for free. However it is currently not in working order, so i wanted to see if it is worth fixing, or throwing away. Used to be a $1500 laptop at one point so it would be cool to fix. I am not the greatest computer guy but i know my way around. Now forgive if this topic has come up before i tried searching and couldnt find anything. Okay, first thing wrong with the laptop is that it has a power issue. The battery is brand new yet it will not charge, i have tried my friends too, and my laptop wont charge it. The only way the computer stays on is if its plugged into the wall. I took the battery out to see if its the charger fault and thats not the case. So i need help on that one. Second problem is that when i turn on the laptop it does not load, it shoes the XP logo then goes straight to a black screen with a little dash loading at the top. I tried pressing all buttons but cant get out of this mode. I also do not have a reboot cd for it. Any suggestions on what i should do with this laptop? Thanks in advance.

Sounds as if you need a new system board to resolve the battery not charging issue. Windows not loading could be a bad hard drive or something as simple as having the OD reinstalled. Also a slim chance its related to the system board.

So should i invest in a new system board or is it not even worth it?

The help you receive here is free and not required. You may wish to keep that in mind. If it's that important you should probably pay someone. Also paragraphs make things much easier to read.

The power issue could be a number of things dirty contacts, bad mobo, faulty power supply. Is your laptop and your friends compatible?

You might want to try a Linux Live CD to see if it boots. That'll tell you if it's a Windows issue or a hardware issue.

Look on HP's website to see if they use the same charger/battery.
