Are you Happy with your HP/Compaq laptop?
-
-
Yes, but check my sig on why I have regrets!
-
I do like my Compaq Presario. For intense keyboard sessions, it's really great. I like the screen - great color/resolution and it seems just a little bit bigger than the screen on the Asus. They're solidly built. You can find extended batteries for the HP/Compaq line of NBs.
HP's customer service really leaves a lot to be desired. The "chat" feature is nice but not always workable. And there are plenty of horror stories of dealing with HP customer service. But there are plenty of people who have had no problems. If only we saw more "HP service is great!" posts or something to even it out.
It's heavy to carry around, esp. after throwing in power cord, CDs, books, etc.
The Compaq Presario has a place, but it's not my "go to" notebook. -
Most of those who got the service they needed and wanted, they wouldn't need to come here.
So, it's a bit of a sided vote, for any OEM on this board.
As for me, I've been using only HP computers for nearly the past ten years, and will not switch to any other company.
I've had great service with HP, and will be an HP customer forever. -
I haven't had my dv2000t very long, but so far it's been great, and I have had no problems with it.
-
I already started a long poll on this, and there were many voters. You did not need to start another one.
-
Hi Conejeitor,
I have had my HP for a year and have no regrets for buying it. -
Yes... but I have regrets (explain)
-Incomplete Drivers (apparently you can't download my webcam driver for my dv2225nr)
-The Bloatware installed!
-Not upgrade vista, or recover cd included.
The laptop however works and looks to shine when I remove all the bloatware and vista SP1 is released. -
voted for no, not at all. i did like the overall features and spec, but the "dislike" way is more than the "like" way
used to owe v3000z series, things tht i dislike:
1) heat - super hot, my country ambient temp is around 27-28c
2) fingerprint magnet - very hard to take care
3) lcd hinge - after 2 month it looks loose or not firm as new bought, i open/close lid at ~ 10 times per day
4) battery life - 2.5 hours, it just isnt enough
5) keyboard - flex keyboard i got, space bar button loose after 2 month usage
6) incomplete drivers - there was no online driver support when i first bought it, it was a new model tht time (freedos based) -
Notebook (NX8220/NC8430) functioned amazingly, but had poor reliability and was backed by atrocious customer service.
-
Only regret I have is that Staples did not have the 6140ca with the 7400 Go video card. Instead, I have the 6150, but it will do.
-
I have to say, I am very pleased with my HP Laptop. I have had 3 from hp, the first being a Compaq V2000, which I loved, the second being a C300 that was purchased for my son. As far as customer support goes, I have had to use them once for a misplaced Xp Disk, and they were very helpfull. I had my replacement in 6 days. All in all, very happy with HP.
-
I like my hp dv2000t! It is far better than the thinkpad t43 I transiently owned.
dv2000t is quiet, multimedia oriented, and sleek looking. go for a hp! -
I'm satisfactory with my old HP business notebook nc6000. It has good and firm keyboard layout and comfortable to use.
-
the lack of any recovery disks is a cheap stunt by HP! charging customers that neglected to burn them before wiping HD's and partitions for the priveledge is a little over the top! However... Customers should not resort to such drastic measures before they understand how things work.
-
Well i'm stuck sending my v3000 in. Having a keyboard problem. They were good with getting all my information tho so I don't have any regrets.
-
No regrets. My dv4000 had minor problems mainly with the DVD RW drive, but it fixed its self everytime. The only major problem I have is a crack formed on the left side of the palm rest, but that was my fault; I hold my laptop with it open on just the palm rests sometimes, it probably puts a bunch of stress on the palm rests considering the 6lb weight of the dv4000. Second HP owned.
-
To make a comment on a couple posts:
Basically all pc's nowadays have some level of "crapware" installed. I will say i was astounded at 54 running processes when i first recieved my dv6000t.
And lots of places make you pay for "recovery discs". If they dont give you that option, then theres always the recovery partition.
MY personal experience with the actual laptop has been stellar. that buzzing noise is terrible, but HP owners arent the only ones with the problem. it needs to be fixed.
I will say that i experience atrocious customers service when i called to get my something with my billing straightened out.
I always say, if your ass dont like your job, find a new one. becuase you WILL get someone like me who will curse you out. I dont fly with nasty customer service. -
Man i'm having a big problem. Anyone know how to get a key back on. I get it back on one hinge but the opposite one doesn't connect.
They better be able to fix it.
-
I'm satisfied with it except for the high pitched sound coming from the computer and the constant fan.
-
Yes I am extremely satisfied. I have owned the budget V2400 for just over a year(Xmas Sale). Happily I have not had any reason to contact customer service. I use it a lot and the only minor issues are with the keypad which tarnished early and sometimes jumps the control, and the KP buttons which have become very worn. So I give it a strong yes with a not quite perfect.
-
Have and my NX9420 for a couple months now and it's a great machine. My only "regret" has been I am stoopid...and it happened yesterday. I discovered there is no parallel port...d'oh!!! who knew??!!! It was kinda funny because I had my last system for about 3 months before realizing it did not have a FDD...
It was easy enough to buy an adapter so not a big deal at all...it was just so funny!! -
Compaq-
M2105US Sempron - 1 1/2 years old
V5306US Turion - 3 months old
Never had a problem yet. Even bought the Turion because I loved the silver w/ white keyboard design (and that it was a steal at $449 after rebates and pricematch). -
Overall, I all happy with HP. My mom bought a DV5000z, and I had one, and they worked almost flawlessly. I also own a HP desktop that is almost 4 years old and still in working condition. Had to replace the hard drive on it, but that was no major problem.
However, I have had constant problems with my DV6000t. From the screen, overheating, to the shatty repair service (they want me to send it in again...3rd time in two months) it has been one constant problem after the next. In the past I had very few problems with HP, but this one laptop has made up for that. -
I sent my laptop in. Already getting it sent back to me tomorrow. I shipped it on Friday. A++ service.
-
I have the dv5139us for about 8 months and the Hard Drive Started to make a grinding noise, HP support was somewhat okay, got the hard drvie back in 2 weeks, blank. But, otherwise the notebook works extremely well.
-
I voted for having a few regrets.
HP has definitely supported my needs, but this laptop shouldn't have had troubles so early in life.
1) My Seagate HDD went south a few weeks ago, but I had a replacement drive the next day!
2) The LCD screen isn't protected well enough. One trip in the backpack left me with a lot of dead pixels, so now I have to watch to not overstuff my backpack and crush the machine. Fortunately, HP (and my accidental protection warranty) replaced the screen within the week. It would have been done the next day had there not been a conflict with my classes.
Obviously, HP isn't at fault on the hard drive...but it was really nice they shipped one quickly enough. The original drive functioned just long enough for me to transfer everything over to the new drive. While the replacement was refurbished, it was Hitachi and actually out-performed my original Seagate on all benchmarks. Access times and throughput were better, though the difference was small. It did, however, shave a few seconds off of boot times so I'm not complaining.
But the LCD was HP's fault...and there's no remedy other than to watch what goes near my laptop or in the same bag. Kudos for them making at several hundred dollar repair on my notebook without putting up a fuss. -
I just got my dv2000t about five days ago. When I first got it, I thought it was pretty slow to open programs, shut down, and start up. However, I didn't think much of it because I had only installed 512 MB of RAM with the intention of upgrading shortly. Today, I got a 1 GB stick of RAM and installed it and I can not tell any difference.
The computer takes almost three minutes to boot and, to me, that is unacceptable. I desperately wish I would have gotten my computer a couple months ago so I could have gotten one when XP was still standard.
I have already streamlined my startup programs and uninstalled everything that I don't need and it still boots like molasses. -

The only issue I have is with support, an overly generous use of the term in HP's case. The language issue is severe and needs to be dealt with.
-
spatial:
did ya get a feeling that the support people are taught to never accept responsibilty or admit the issue is on HP's end? I ask because I got that sense when dealing with Dell support in India. I got good support for the most part but I got the sense the support people are taught some sort of marketing slight of hand to avoid speaking in absolutes.
Just curious... -

What up, G?
Obfuscation from a CSR? Nah.
I think that's more of a reflection on management policies. What's that saying? "Don't let your mouth write a check your ass can't cash". Better to have them on a short leash than to give away the store. Admitting they're at fault could also open a door for legal action down the road depending on the situation. Sad times.
Another problem is the pedantic attitude. There's obviously a protocol that's followed and I usually don't have a problem with that especially when there is a possibility of misunderstanding, but there comes a time when whatever game plan you're using needs to be altered. I mean, I can only check the friggin' power cord so many times before the realization that another approach might be prudent sinks in.
Again, as I've said before, this is not a rant against the current support staff's ability to determine and solve an issue before them. They could all be geniuses. For me it simply comes down to understanding what has been said and moving on. And God forbid I use colloquialisms or contractions. In addition, my case is made somewhat worse by my thick Boston accent, although why that's an issue I'll never know. It's all you people from outside the area that speak funny -
dude!!
I think you really summed it up there in your post. The people are pretty much nice and fine. As you say it's the small issues that we take for granted in everyday conversation that impede communication. So yup, gotta blame the policy people that create the support scripts. And it's sort of the way the support details seem hidden as if they are some national secret.
I mean if it is possible to still have an internet connection and you have a problem then why can we not have a shared session so we the customer can see the details on our screen too. It might help ID exactly what problem exists faster if a person could use a mouse and circle the broken part.
I took to getting a list of everything I had done, taking pics when necessary and putting them on a server. Then i will call and share what I have to date as organized as I can...the pics have been well received the few times they were needed.
But it's all just to smooth the communication as much as I can from the peon, er...customer end of the call.
I can just hear the conversation between you with your fun Bawstun accent and an Indian accent...oh dear jebus!! I am already laughing! BTW, we got Nomahhh...we got Nomahhh...and you guys got stuck with the Drewish Princess....so THERE take THAT!!!
Thanks for the chuckles...off to dreamland for -
I have a DV8000, a DV5000 both with 2G AMD processors. I also had a DV1000 prior to these two.
I must say that I am happy with these for the most part. I was lucky not to get a DV8000 with a keyboard issue, but I wasn't quite as lucky with the DV5000. However, I purchased a replacement keyboard for the DV5000 and since I swapped out the original, I've had no problems with it.
As for regrets, I regret restricting my notebook purchases to Brick and Mortar stores rather than ordering from HP directly. Since I am a developer, I would have then purchased a model with a higher resolution screen than what is available in the store, like an NC8430. I like the resolution of my DV8000 (though it is lower that I would prefer), but it's a bit big to lug around. The DV5000 is portable enough but there's just not enough screen space.
Of course, this issue is my own fault. I think for the next purchase, I will have to get over my reluctance to order online.
I also regret the touchpads not having a kill switch for typing since my hands over the touchpad is moving the mouse quite a bit (thank goodness I have the tapping disabled).
Other than those gripes, I've been quite satified with how well my notebooks have held up.
cycloptic -
I'm happy with my current Presario, but I wish I had gotten the dedicated ram version of the X200M instead (as there is a performance difference).
Also, I had a bum power adapter from out of the box. I replaced it at my own expense, as I did not want to deal with HP support. -
Completely dissatisfied with my HP experience. My dv5030us was nothing but problems. Everything from the faulty keyboard to unstable USB 2.0 support to the fact that the motherboard finally took a dump.
Then the HP loaner I received from the store was defective too!
I'll never buy HP again. -
No not at all. TOTALLY DISSATSIFIED. A waste of money (buying) and time (customer support)
1) When i bought my first notebook (a nx6115), within 3 months i had a SMART diagnostic error about an impending failure. Sweet.
After the laptop returned, i soldiered on with it for another 4 months before switching to an Asus. Reason? The performance was pathethic. I can put the blame on the RAM (384MB) and another case of a failing hard drive.
2) The first time i sent it for servicing, the cust support was ok. The second time i went, the rep guy there doesn't seems to be very happy. The LCD screen also was a bit loose at the hinge, but he said it was alright. WT*.
3 days later i came back with a replaced hard disk which speedfan reported 90% performance and 90% fitness. cool. and best part of all they spoiled my headphone jack. I am not going back to that customer service center.
I'm boycotting HP. -
No not at all. Totally dissatisfied.

I really like my dv2000t, but seeing that A8JP on newegg made me with that I had gone after that instead. But still, I'm extremely happy with my dv2000t. Its fast, light, stylish, and not too expensive.
-
Totally satisfied with my dv2000t. Runs great!
-
I have never, in my 7 years as an HP owner, been dissatisfied with ANY of my HP products... except maybe for a couple HP branded ink cartridges
, which HP replaced for me. Each has performed at least as well as expected and at least as long as should be expected too. I did buy a super cheap all-in-one printer that had it's scanner fail in about 1.5 years, but for what I paid for it, no complaints... I still use it as a printer on my 7 year old desktop (all original, except for the second hard drive I added and the RAM upgrade I added).
-
I like the looks and specs of my DV9030, but I have had a few issues with it that I don't feel a new $1,500 laptop should have. About a week after I got it, a key popped off the keyboard. I had Circuit City put a new keyboard on it, and about two days later the enter key on that keyboard quit working. Finally got that issue taken care of. I've got lots of rattling coming from the palm rests. It's especially bad when typing if my wrists are resting on the palm rests. The past two weeks the fan has been running on the mid setting almost constantly. I blew the fan out with a can of compressed air and it hasn't been running as hot, so hopefully that's taken care of. The lid is also getting really loose. I can move the top of the lid about an inch or so with very little pressure, and it makes a clicking sound when I move it. So all in all, I am disapppointed with the quality for this computer. It's a shame too. I had a few year old Compaq Presario desktop before I got this laptop that was flawless.
-
I had an issue with the keyboard on my V5000Z,sent it in.They installed XP pro on the machine as I had home. However the keyboard issue was not repaired. So I got a replacement V6000T,with many upgrades,Brightview screen, imprint finish, card reader,2 more USB ports, lock, the quick play features, and mics in the lid.I am very pleased with the results. The machine works flawlessly.Every support question has been through the online support feature and they have answered every inquiry with satisfaction.

this hp is 8 months old now (the one in my sig)
its been to the repair centre once an thats it till now atleast
this baby has served me well till now and hasnt let me down
so i do quite trust hp now
but regret not aving a spill proof keyboard or a fingerprint reader and a shock mounted Hdd but one cant have the whole package with a low price tag right? -
Poor quality consumer line and a bad customer service that comes with it.
I do not recommend buying a consumer notebook from hp. If I can go back in time, I would try out a business line. If that doesn't work, no more hp for me. -
Overall, i am satisfied.
First laptop i had was an omnibook xe3. it had some weird problems, such as the internal display would not turn back on after removing an external display. Sent it in a couple times to HP and they didn't fix it at all. Oh well.
2nd laptop was a dv1550se. It was one of the nicest laptops i've ever had. The thing underclocked like a beast and the fan NEVER at the lowest multiplier/voltage. It had some quality control issues, as the right side of the laptop drooped a little lower than the rest of the laptop. hence, there was a small crevasse between screen and the chassis when closing the lid.
3rd laptop was a dv2109nr. it was an okay laptop, but the heat from the left palm rest (where the hdd was located) was unbearably hot. In addition, the fan was annoying, as it would turn on too frequently for my taste (it was even worse with vista). Loved the 12 cell battery, though, as i pulled some insane battery life with it.
4th laptop was a nc6400. It was a refurb, but looked brand new upon opening the box. The thing runs ultra cool and just seems more sturdier than the previous HP laptops i've owned. Weird thing is that i get better battery life with vista than i did with xp. Go figure! -
Gotta say I'm thrilled with my new dv6000t. Had it about a month now and it's working surprisingly well. (Hope I didn't jinx it now).
I've owned a number of Toshiba's before -- brand loyal. And one Vaio. But I started looking at HP because a) HP offered a built-in web cam. Toshiba has only started offering those now I see. And b) it seems like I got more computer for the $$ with HP. Not because of any problem I've had with Toshiba's in the past. -
I guess HP wants us to buy docks since they have plenty of all kinds of connectors.
BTW - I voted satisfied. i like my 9420 - fast, cool and big. I undervolted it and it works flawlessly reaching 10 degrees lower temps than on stock speeds. x1600 is easily overclockable - so there is nothing to complain at. Fast and cool machine.
Cheers,
Ivan -
I have never called to HP Support myself, since I've never bought a brand new HP laptop. Okay, so HP Support is wrong.. It's HPs "HomePC" Support I work at, laptops and computers that customers get via their job. They pay a small amount of cash each month for it. Know what I mean?
Anyway. We have to follow the rules here, and I have bumped into customers that are pissed off, and I mean really pissed off. Customers that threaten to sue us, boycot us and report us to whatever. They're not fun to deal with, and I can't do much about their problems myself. I'm just a lowly support technician. I understand that some customers hate us when their computer is DOA, and then comes back from service - still dead. But our policy says that it's not our support centre that decides whether they get a new computer or not, it's the place repairing the computers that do. In this situation all I can say is; "I'm sorry, but I have done all I can. I can not decide if you get a new computer or not etc etc."
Just a small example. So yeah, I can understand why some hate HP. But in general WE, the folks at our support are very generous as far as I'm concerned. -
well... in fact ... hp is quite ok... i've seen my share of what people do to their laptops... i've owned 4 hp's so far... 3 consumer and my last one is from the business line....
i've had NO problems with the first three... and this last one had it's hdd fail on me in the first 2 months (a crappy fujitsu 5400... i've put in a 7200 seagate and kept the replacement in a rack)
hp is top notch.... the only thing they could do better is driver support... but if you have a fair knowledge about computers they are no problem...
