Hello guys, there is a way to test the wireless card in the laptop, seems to be dead. The laptop is almost 3 years old and is no longer under warranty.

This model of laptop (in general) had a lot of issues due to the faulty Geforce go 6150 GPU, and I guess that the excessive heat generated by it has taken it's toll.

Can you guys recommend me a good cardbus compatible with this laptop?

    Thanks for reading me.

Thanks Brian, no wonder why this things happen:

Note the GPU max temp reading!

I feel ripped off by HP/nVidia, and I will NEVER, I mean NEVER buy a HP/nVidia product again.

Edit: does anybody know if there are videos or guides to disassamble the laptop to clean the heatsink and apply new thermal grease?

Confirm that temp with HWMonitor from http://cpuid.com/
    That's insanely hot.

I can't think of a video breakdown, but the HP service guide provides a pretty good walkthrough.

The temps are correct, if you touch the bottom of the laptop you'll get burn.

The fan sounds like a jet airplane taking off.

OK, I check and both HP/Compaq laptops we have qualify for service through HP.

We purchased the laptops in april 2007, with 1 year standard warranty, does it still qualify for the 2 year limited warranty service enhancement?

Probably not. It's 2 years from date of purchase so the enhanced warranty ran out this past April. But call HP anyhow and see what they say.

Hi Brian, thank you for your replies.

I have another question, do you know if this series of laptops (v6000z) support windows 7? I've checked the HP support page for drivers and they don't list any driver for Windows 7.

Edit: I've updated the BIOS (ver. F3.D), now the computer is running quietly, but the temps are still very high (88C - 92C idle, reached 120C while ran the windows vista benchmark).

I called HP and they refuse to help me, also tryied via chat and the only thing they said is "update the BIOS" or "check this link" {how to clean the vents}).

I guess I'll have to take appart the laptop, clean the fan and clean the cpu/gpu and add some new thermal grease.

Win7 will run very well on it. You can get most of the drivers from Windows Update. You'll need to grab the Vista flash memory card reader and NVIDIA chipset drivers from hp.com. I think that's all I did for my parents' dv9208nr.

Replacing the thermal pad with a copper shim makes for an amazing difference in GPU cooling. Below 70C max on a dv2000z using Arctic Silver 5 and a copper penny.

    Thanks again Brian.

Although the process looks complicated, I'll give it a try in the next days I guess, I'll try everything I have in my hands to lower the temps on that thing.
