Hi. I recently bought the HP DM1-4050us and was wondering the difference between it and the just released DM1-4170us. I am pondering returning it for the newer model but I would like to know the differences first as I cannot find any differences of the specs online.

I was trying to figure out the difference between these two models, too. Under the specs pages, the dm1-4170us is listed as WiDi capable (Intel's wireless display technology), but the dm1-4050us is not. Do you know if the dm1-4050 is WiDi capable or not?

Also, at this time, the dm1-4050us includes an external dvd drive at HP.com, but the dm1-4170us does not. Any other insights would be greatly appreciated.

From what I can see, the only difference is what missinglink mentioned that the 4170us is mentioned to have WiDi and 4050us is not.

Now it'll depend if in case you got it with the dvd drive, now it will be do you want the dvd drive or WiDi enabled. As the 4050us should be WiDi capable due to being the same specs but not sure if some other type of hardware has to be put with the system to make WiDi enable devices.

You can always add a USB DVD drive. I have a couple. The last one I bought was a Asus portable BD drive that can also burn BD data discs. Widi on the other hand, is part of the Intel chipset and cannot be added later on. And you will need a Netgear push2go or similar adapter connected to the TV for the notebook to be connected wirelessly. From what I have read, it works decent enough to play media content, HD movies etc.. but their is a lag or delay when using it interactively. So using it for web surfing may be difficult with the cursor delay. Also the Netgear Push3go adapter will run you about 100 dollars (on rare occasions it may be included with high priced systems like Sony). Many feel because of the lag, your better off just connecting it directly with HDMI. My main system is a P740 14" toshiba system with i5 and I have dedicated the dm1 permanently inside my big screen cabinet for when I need a PC connected to my Vizio big screen. IMO, the slower AMD powered E-350 is not fast enough to be my daily computer but perfect for the occasional use on the Vizio.

I hadn't checked this thread for a bit but found it doing a Google search.

Anyways I decided to keep the 4050 because it did come with Intel widi which is the only difference in specs I saw and would like the option to use widow in the future with my home theatre and television in the bedroom. It also came with the external DVD drive as well which is styled rather nicely too. As far as I can tell the 4050 is the exact same netbook/mini laptop. I am very pleased with my purchase as well. I love the form factor as I have a home built PC for all of my non mobile needs.

So you're saying there is no difference between the two versions? Interesting.

Also, does the touchpad scroll on startup? I used to have the AMD version and the touchpad wouldn't scroll upon startup...I always had to go into mouse setting to turn scrolling on.

    Thanks
