I have a 5 month old HP DM4-1060EA notebook. Already the battery lasts for much less time than when new and it won't charge up to 100%. Typically it gets to around 87% and then says "87% available (plugged in, NOT charging)". The HP Advisor PC Dashboard said battery condition is "Poor" but when I ran HP Battery Check it said "an error was encountered trying to access the battery." and now it displays condition unknown.
What is the warranty situation with batteries? I've never had one start to go bad this quickly before. The battery (MU-06) when purchased on its own from HP's online shop comes with a 3 year warranty, so clearly they expect them to last longer than 5 months!
Who should I contact for warranty replacement of the battery - HP or the retailer? I really don't want to have to take the whole machine back. On the other hand, I'm now slightly concerned that the fault could be with the charging circuitry since HP Battery Check can't even get the battery status any more.

Take this up with HP because (I'm assuming here) the warranty is with them.

I do have a 2 year extended warranty with the retailer, but I am 99.99% certain that in the event of any problems they would want the entire machine returned. I would prefer to simply try a replacement battery and if I can do that with HP directly I will, especially as it's still within the 1st year of standard manufacturer warranty. I'll try giving them a call.

I gave HP UK tech support a call and they talked me through getting the latest version of HP support assistant. This still reported a problem with the battery, so they are shipping me a new one!
Fantastic service from HP. I had a previous HP laptop and that had the dodgy nVidia overheating problem. The machine was out of warranty but HP extended the standard warranty and fixed it for free. I have to say based on these experiences they are one of the best of the manufacturers I've dealt with.
