I have an HP Pavilion DV 5000 with an amd turion 64x2. Windows XP (all versions) and Vista freezes after loading set up drivers and says, Set up is starting windows. This is befor pressing f8 or selecting a drive. I have tried 4 diffrent hard drives, I have tried fresh installs, tried to install from windows 98. I have tried drives with operating systems already on them. I have swaped out cd drives, Memory, used one chip, used 2 (tied all comibinations between 4 sticks of ram) I have got it to load win 98, though there are no drivers for this operating system. The Bios is out of date by about 3 updates, but have no way to install a win flash. (98 does not suport it). I can not boot from an externial cd, there is not an option for that in the bios. Any Sugestions?

Let's start with something simple. Burn and boot MemTest86+ and see if it reports errors. AMD CPUs are very picky about memory, which is why I recommend buying Crucial RAM (Micron chips) when upgrading.

Heat would be the other obvious possibility. Your heatsink might need cleaning, if it gets clogged with dust it won't work well. Make sure the fan is still working.

Does it get passed POST (Power on Self Test)?

I would say that it is either a BIOS problem or a motherboard problem, so you could try flashing the BIOS. Since you're asking on this forum, I take it that the laptop is out of warranty?

I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply, some how i guess i forgot i posted here.
I have checked the memory, and it checks out fine. I can not flash the bios, because it needs to be in windows xp, and of course i can't install windows.
I wish i could find a free stess test for the video, I have a feeling that might be the problem
