Does anyone have one of these? I was thinking about customizing one at Hpshopping.com. With a 3 year Accidentle warranty I can get it for a price I'm willing to spend, with alot of features. Seems to be a pretty good laptop to me. I don't want to go any bigger then 14". How is the battery life on them? It's either this or a Apple G4 12" PowerBook... but I would rather wait until they're done with their hole Intel switchover before getting a PB.

With the standard 6 cell battery, you get 3-4 hours of battery life. With the larger 12 cell battery which raises the back of the machine a bit, you get twice that. It is a very good laptop, good quality.

dv1000 gets very positive reviews - search for them here
and see reviews at cnet.com, pcmag, and elsewhere.
Some like the dvd playing but mostly general PC use.
Quietly upgraded graphics & cpu (Sonoma) happened in recent weeks
making it more attractive.
12-cell battery doubles battery time.

Another smart option is 5400 rpm drive and 2x 512 ram.
Extended warranties are reportedly not worth it - computer
parts suffer infant mortality, fail in 1st few months or last for
years - unless you're a heavy-use user, better to purchase
a separate insurance policy from a regular insurance co.
And, some extended warranties (Best Buy?) do cover batteries
which need replacement every year or 2.
Apple reportedly contracted with a Taiwanese 14" wxga screen
maker - i.e. the dv1000 screen - for release in the pre-Christmas
season ... maybe intel-based, maybe not.
