Given that both have the same specs and price and you would only go for pure looks, which would you choose?

dizzy - ummm i know that they cant have the same specs and the list of different aspecs can go on which is why i said "given" so that people wont argue on the specs but rather would choose among the two is better on the basis of "looks" and looks alone.

so let's hear it guys =)

I like black notebooks, so another vote for the Compaq.

If based only on looks, definitely the Compaq. I don't like the looks of the HP. If I were to balance out looks and features, it would be pretty close for me.

For some reason i think DV series looks better because of the webcam feature and the wireless remote.I don t know if i should get the DV or the V series this time, since ive been using compaq only laptops for 7 years now. Dont know if i should continue the trend.

I kind like'em both. The V3000 is more plain and black laptop always looks good IMO. The dv2000 looks good when open, the only thing I didnt like was the glossy black lid which will be more prone to fingerprints.

V3000 also has the remote option just like DV. The question is if you really like the web cam, or if you video chat a lot.

With services such as SightSpeed and Skype proliferating, offering FREE calls throughout the US and Canada, and the low price of adding a camera/mic to your system, I really can't see why anyone wouldn't want these features.

If any of you haven't checked out SightSpeed, do yourself a favor and check out this program! The video it delivers is simply amazing. No jerkiness, stays synced with the audio... this is finally what video conferencing should be!

ummm this is the reason why i want this thread to consider ONLY the looks of the units and leave out the other specs =)

not to be an ass but can we just discuss its specs in other threads. Im really not interested if it has a webcam, or if it has a duo core or such... just the looks =)

I do Skype a lot, but through voice. I just it just like you said it is free to call through US/CANADA. But usually my callee doesn't have a cam feature on their land phone or mobile service, so voice only where Compaq is enough.

Yeah, Compaq looks much business style where HP is much on entertainment side to me. I pick Compaq if I should. But I would rather wait for couple of month. I really don't like Compaq's non-7200 available things.

I vote for the compaq! I am not really fond of notebooks that have more then one main coloring. ie - the dv2000 has silver and black. I just don't like the contrasting between the colors. The v3000 has nice similiar dark shades on the whole laptop.

Haven't seen a Compaq in the flesh, so to speak...

Doesn't the v3000 have a silver lid? Anyone know where they have the v3000's on display?

(Not gonna change... I"m thrilled with my dv2k, but I'd like to see the Compaq.)

First of all, a disclaimer: I have a dv2000t so my opinions may be a bit biased (but hey, all our opinions are biased anyway, right?)

When these laptops were first announced, I thought that the Compaq (with its all black casing) was definitely nicer. However when I was able to compare them side by side, I found that I liked the HP better. The silver around the keyboard seemed to "break up" the all black look and make it look much nicer. I also found that the HP just "felt better". More rounded corners. Obviously this is all very subjective. Just my 2 cents worth.

I too have a dv2000 on the way, so take it with a grain of salt. But the review I posted last night has this to say:

"The last time a notebook ever looked so stylish was the Japanese IBM ThinkPad 10th Anniversary Limited Edition X30. There’s no doubt that the dv2000t is one of the best looking laptops on the market."

From looking at the compaq website I'm pretty **** sure the Compaq is a silvery gray graphite looking color. Its definitely not like the HP lid.

I've looked at both and I like the V3000 better, the all black is very sexy. I just got rid of my Toshiba and bought this baby.
Its a real shame it doesn't have some of the options the HP does because it looks better to me and I feel bad that the Compaq models are always toned down models of the HP. :(

I have the exact same model, the V3019, looks a lot better than the V2000 series for sure.

Think it also looks better than the Dv2000, just wish it had the features of the HP, sucks that Compaq was such a huge computer maker and after being absorbed by HP, its computers are just lower end versions of HPs. :( :( :(

I actually had both. The reason I bought the Compaq in the first place was because it was all black.. it looked awesome but then it died less than a month and HP replaced it with a dv2000, the only difference is the palm rest trim is silver. Otherwise it's basically the same laptop but I heard the screen might be made by different manufacturer.

i think they both look pretty similar, but I like the dual color of the dv2000 series' better.
