Today I've received an HP DV2000T replacement. No luck, still a SEC4242 screen. The only advantage is that with a 15% discount coupon that HP was running till 10/21/06, I was able to get for the same price the same unit, except with 2gb rather than 1gb of RAM.
Now to the matter of concern to me: I've noticed right away that the fan kicks in almost every minute or two while I am using the notebook. In fact, almost every time I perform a function--any function, as simple as opening a browser, a word doc, or deleting programs--the fan kicks in and emits a burst of air and then quiets down after 15-30 secs and over and over and over again. With the previous HP DV2000T the fan would let itself be known very rarely, for example when I was doing heavy benchmarking or video editing. Is this something to worry about? Does HP configure fan functions differently, depending on RAM (say 1 vs 2 gb, which is the only difference in my current model). Is there a way to re-configure fan functions on your own, and is it prudent? Sorry for simple-minded questions from a hardware ignoramus.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

The CPU temperature appears normal (around 50C). What still concerns me, however, is the frequency with which the fan turns on, if for a few secs. Is that normal and subject to safe manual configuration?

Okay, I've subjected the notebook to the heaviest use I could possibly think of. I ran AT THE SAME TIME video encoding in Windows Movie Maker, a video in WMA, three videos in Firefox, adobe updates (downloading and installing), picture editing in photosmart, word open, HP webcam on, and playing a silly game in HP Games. No lag at any point, which is quite amazing! But, the fan was on the whole time, and CPU temperature rose at one point as high as 93C (though it dropped as soon as video encoding and hp gaming were over.) Is that temperature coupled with uninterrupted fan normal or unsafe during heavy use? Does this test affect others' judgment about whether the fan works generally properly in my notebook (see first message)? Sorry for simple-mindedness and paranoia!

It think it is normal. This model is thinner which mean it potenially ran warmer. The fan does kick it more often than my old DV 5000z, which was a little thicker case. My fan kick in pretty often like every 5 mins. I think as long as your CPU temp is fan and no lag at all you don't need to worry.
