My Steps to Re-Image the HP DV2000Z (AMD)

Thanks to Notebook Abuser for his HP dv2000t (intel) reinstall guide. I used a lot of copy and paste and modified it for the HP dv2000z (AMD) model. This will work whether you are installing both Win XP Home or XP Pro. The HP restore disks just puts the same factory image on the machine. You will need the XP OS disks (does not come with the system) to perform clean installs. I had XP Pro SPII. Unlike the Intel versions, no need to fuss with disabling SATA support. The benefit of doing a clean install is tremendous in terms of startup speed cutting it down to around a minute from boot.

This process takes about 3 hrs from the time you begin making your restore disks in step 1 but pays off big time with faster load times and less bloatware. Burning restore disks take about 1 hr 15 min, Win XP install 1 hr, and driver installs about 45 minutes.

This is a work in progress and will be updated as others respond to this thread or I find any other revelations later down the line. Refer to the HP DV2000Z driver site for model specific drivers.

    My Specs:
    AMD Turion (TM) 64 X2 Mobile TL-50 (1.60GHz/256KB)
    14" WXGA BrightView Widescreen
    1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
    NVIDIA (R) GeForce(R) Go 6150
LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD +/-RW w/Double Layer
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition (upgraded via this guide to XP Pro)
    12 Cell Lithium

    Steps:

    1. Run PC Recovery Program to backup to 3 DVD Recovery Disks. This takes over an hour and 15 minutes. In retrospect, buying the disks from HP for $19.95 when configuring the computer online does sound like a good idea.

    2. Backup the whole C:\SwSetup (to another DVD)

    3. OPTIONAL - add 10GB back to C: drive.

Access HP's advanced boot option by pressing F11 during startup to delete the d:\recovery partition and re-combine.

    or

Install Partition Magic. Delete the D:\ partition so there will be about 10 extra gigabytes of space. Reclaim the space by increasing the size of the C:\

NOTE: do not touch the 1028mb quickplay partition at this point.

    4. Insert a Windows XP Bootable disk (cancel any install autostarts)

    5. Restart and Boot off the Windows XP CD, and enter Windows setup.

    6. Delete the C:\ partition and also delete the D:\ partition of 1028mb used for QuickPlay (not to be confused with the HP Recovery partition deleted in step 3). Leave the D:\ partition unformatted for step 10.

    7. Choose C: to install, do format the partition using the NTFS file system. (Full format for the 1st time, it takes awhile)

    8. Continue to install Windows XP Home or Pro

    9. After install, copy SwSetup folder the local c: drive

    10. Install Direct Play part of QuickPlay (HP QuickPlay Direct 2.3) from Swsetup\HPQPDP\setup.exe

If you didn't delete the Quickplay partition in step 6, you will likely get the following error:
    - ComponentMoveData had the following error:
    - Component: QuickPlay COmponent
    File Group:
    File:
    Error Number: -2147418113

    - Fix the above issue by deleting the D: 1028MB partition in the Control Panel->Admin Tools->Comp Mgmt->Disk Mgmt so that it appears to be UNALLOCATED SPACE. Redo step 23
    - After install of Quickplay, it needs to reboot. Instead, I continued installing step 11 and step 12 then rebooted.

    11. Install the QuickPlay software (HP QuickPlay 2.3) from SwSetup\QPW. This will also give you the MPEG2 codec you need to play DVDs and use the TV tuner.

    12. Install the QuickLaunch buttons from SwSetup\QLB\Disk1\Setup.exe.
    - This step resolved an Unknown device in the Other Devices
    - After this step, it asks for a reboot so I did so

POTENTIAL BOOT ERROR - I experienced a boot error after installing Quickplay. Others haven't experienced this so maybe I just got lucky. I you have a boot error too, I suspect this can be resolved by fixing the boot.ini for weird entries before rebooting after installing quickplay. I think installing Quickplay modified the boot.ini resulting in an error on boot about missing HAL.DLL. I had to boot from the XP Pro CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. At the command prompt, I typed the following which allowed me to boot back into Windows.

    DEL C:\Boot.ini
    BootCfg /Rebuild
    Fixboot

    13. MICROSOFT BUS DRIVER - In order to install the audio and modem drivers, you need to install this first - Microsoft UAA Bus Driver. Goto SwSetup\1UAA\Disk1 and run setup.exe. Windows Hardware manager will find some devices to install (modem, audio, etc...) hit cancel.

    14. CONEXANT HIGH AUDIO - Run the SwSetup\Audio\Setup.exe to "UPGRADE" Conexant High Definition Audio

    15. Install Modem Drive (HDAUDION Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP), Goto SwSetup\Modem and run Setup.exe

    16. VIDEO DRIVER - After the video driver, the screen will start to look halfway normal instead of the default Windows video driver. Install Video Driver (NVIDIA Windows XP Display Driver) in SwSetup\Video and run Setup.exe The screen will automatically adjust after complete. It'll ask you to reboot.

    17. Install AMD (chipset) driver. Go to SwSetup\AMD\setup.exe then reboot.

    185. Install NVidia chipset Drivers at SwSetup\chipset\setup.exe
This will install SMBus, SMU, Ethernet Driver, and Storage Driver.
Frankly, I'm not sure what all this is but it enabled my ethernet card to start working. I said NO to installing NVIDIA Firewall & ForceWare Network Access Manager but that's your option

    19. Install Wireless Lan (Broadcom 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter) from \SwSetup\WLAN\SETUP.exe

    20. Install Media Card Reader Driver (Ricoh R5C832/843 Flash Media Driver Ver.1.01.10) from \SwSetup\MISC2\setup.exe

    21. Enable Firewall before going online! Windows Firewall within the Control Panel should suffice but any other good firewall should work (I used the free version of Zone Alarm).

    22. TOUCHPAD - Did NOT install Synaptics from SwSetup\Touchpad. Touchpad worked anyway with default Windows driver but I downloaded and installed latest software direct from the vendor www.synaptics.com

    23. JAVA - Did NOT install JAVA from SwSetup\java. Downloaded and installed latest software from www.java.com

    24. ADOBE READER - Did NOT install JAVA from SwSetup\Adobe2. Downloaded and installed latest software from www.adobe.com

    25. SHOCKWAVE - Did NOT install JAVA from SwSetup\sckwa. Downloaded and installed latest software from www.apple.com

    26. Install Windows Updates (IE > Tools > Windows Update) which takes about 45 minutes.

NOTES: Both the microphone and the camera installed themselves with no additional drivers

OPTIONS - may vary by what components you may have chosen for your personal "build to order" system.

    00. Install Lightscribe
    Lightscribe uses Sonic at \SwSetup\SonicDMP\setup.exe
also run \SwSetup\LSHSI\LS_HSI_US.bat for install of Lightscribe instructions

    00. Install BlueTooth (HP INtegrated Module with Bluetooth wireless Technology 4.0.1.3500), Goto SwSetup\BTOOTH and run setup.exe

    00. Cool HP wallpaper (I use Factal_Blue_Wide) can be found in
    SwSetup\BrandIt\Disk1\Bitmap
I didn't install anything, just dragged the bitmap to the C:\Windows folder

This is it! You should have all the drivers resolved by now. Right click on My Computer, click the Hardware tab, click Device Manager and you shouldn't have any yellow questionmarks.

The only thing I would add is to install Quickplay before installing any other drivers. I have found this to be more reliable than installing it after the drivers. Also if you remove all partitons during Windows setup and just leave 1028mb unformatted in the end, you wont encounter the error during QP install.

Other than that Great job on the guide.
    Thanks

hi miner, thanks for the input. do you think removing all partitions would resolve both the quickplay error mentioned in step 18 AND the boot error in step 21 or just the quickplay install error in 18?

I havent come across the boot error before. Did you have any other external drives connected while the system restarted during QP install? That might be one of the causes.

No idea. The QP installation could have messed up during installation, might not happen always. I have never come across that error and I have re-installed QP 3-4 times.

Anyways it sems the error is easy to fix.

Hey good job Chi and Miner,

That was a good write up on your experience. In hindsight, I think moving the QP install up front does make a lot of sense. So enjoy your laptop now that everything is running smoothly.

I have mine for a month now and everything works great. I do have some tiny issues with my remote that it doesn't seem like it's working at times. But I haven't got time to troubleshoot it!

This install order (with QP moved up to the top) worked great. I just used it to install Windows 2003 Server on my dv2000z. The only remaining issues I have are the following...
    1. Ricoh SD reader shows "unknown" driver, but SD is the only one that doesn't work.
    2. have one QP driver under ATA/IDE devices that's unknown and I have yet to find for install.
    3. the same bluetooh = bluescreen problem I had under XP Pro. The only solution I have is to disable it, as the neither the HP drivers, nor the WIDCOM drivers fix the problem.

This will be my last install until the Vista drivers for the dv2000z are ready.

It would be the same, you might be able to get the latest version of the drivers but its no more difficult than installing it from the SWsetup folder. If you still want to make installation more streamlined& automated, then it might be possible to slipstream some of the drivers onto the XP CD using nlite.

Can any of you tell me how I would go about reinstalling the QuickPlay partition if it was never in my SWSETUP folder? Is there any place I can download this?

    I have a HP Pavillion dv1660se
I have upgraded to vista RC2, build 5744
Since then, DirectPlay for quickplay does not work....partition still intact...finally figured out how to use BCDEDIT.exe to edit the boot sector (or the replacement for boot.ini)
I have it setup now where I turn the laptop on, it comes up to an OS boot menu...
    Windows Vista

    or

    HP QuickPlay DirectPlay

if I boot to the quick play partition, it starts out fine....says windows XP and all that stuff....but then it blue screens.....that is why I would like to reinstall the partition.

    QuicPlay works wonderful under windows!!

    Thanks for the help.

hey, my sister has hp pavilion dv6000 (dv6011ea). so i tried to install clean windows xp pro for her with this instructions.. but something was wrong with my windows cd so i had to install again.. now i have:

c: 1 gb / deleted when installing win xp, this is partition for quick play
d: here is windows, it boots ok and works.
    e: HP_recovery

But I would like to have:

    c: windows
    d: QP
    e: hp_recovery

How can I do that? Is it possible with partition magic to switch c: and d:??

What if I would delete QP partition and make a new one. Do I need the files that are now on it? Or they get also installed later? Does the size of partition have to be the same as now?

What about hp_recovery?? is this the same stuff as on dve 2 dvds that i made with software on notebook?

A lot of questions, but I hope someone can help. Thanks. :)

    mumbo,

Forgot the details but QP has to be in the orignal location...
It has to do with the way QP and the OS is "toggled" when you boot the machine, When you press the QP button it flip-flops (for a better word) the bootloader, toggled one way the OS boots, the other QP.

For details on QP you can check this thread: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread141817.html

**** this is good! Can someone do something like this for the dv2000t ? I read the install guide for dv2000t but it isnt this detailed. A week ago after reading the re-install guide for the 2000t, i was still asking myself if i should format the 1024mb partition of the quickplay as it doesnt mention this.

So can if U delete all the partitions, make clean new one, and install Your own XP, u are not able to recover any of the things that wre on HDD when U bought it? or U can do it with those Recovery disks U burn at the beginning?
Why after installing Your own windows U just can't install all necessary drivers??
And how U can get QP working after this??

Yes if you reinstall with your own copy of Windows it will delet everything on the HDD. The recovery discs will put the HDD back to factory state, so your system will be back to the same state as it was when you first bought it.

Well thats what you do in any system. In HP's stock windows installation they include the setup files for all the drivers & preinstalled software in a separate folder called SWSetup. If you have a backup copy of this reinstallation is very easy to install the drivers.

Err...Didnt you read through the thread?? It deals with installing a fresh copy of Windows then installing QP and ofcourse naturallly all the drivers.

Ups, I think Ive overlooked it ;) well, now I get everything.
Just few questions, do U have to have some unalocated space (and does it have to be 1GB) for QP? or should I create a partition for it? will it become the 1st partition? can I hide it with partition magic and still use QP?

When installing Windows, just leave 1GB(yes it has to be 1GB) unallocated. Do not create any partition/rename/hide because the QP install will fail if you do so. You wont actually see the QP partition in My Computer before you install it since its unallocated & you wont even see it after you install QP since it will hide the partition for you.

Hello, I have been struggling with this for several days. I wonder if anyone has had success getting Media Center Edition working fully with this method. Windows Media Center requires two disks. Disk one is Windows XP and disk two is the Media Center components. Is it possible to get the MCE components from the restore disk? I have installed windows from my XP pro disk and gotten Windows working fine. It even says it is MCE. I would really like to get the Media Center stuff installed.

The only thing U are actually missing from what Ive noticed is just Media Center suit and ne theme for windows.
Do U have access to the second CD?? I was trying to integrate the 2nd CD with CD1 to create a DVD out of it but it wasnt working, after booting up, installing all those drivers when on the bottom strip it shows message "Starting Windows" or something like this it crashes and says that Windows aborted operation to prevent your hardware from defects or sthing like that.

If You could borrow CD2 from somebody just make a copy for yourself, it's not protected or anything and if You were supplied with MCE Windows with your laptop, use your OEM key. I am going to write a post about creating this Windows as managed to get it from Uni recently :) And now Ive got two :) One for my laptop and the other for PC :)

I do not have disk two. I was hoping there was a way to create disk two from the restore disk or from the drive itself. I have successfully created a windows dvd the BartPE way. I am looking into booting from a knoppix live cd to see if I can read the recovery partition and transfer any needed files from there.

Okay, I can view the recovery partition from knoppix and see the information appears to be stored in the preload directory as *.INP files. I am googling to see what I can use to open these files. Does anyone know of anything available to open this type of file?

Probably the best bet is to search SWSetup directory and look up for MCE files there. It is actually quite strange that these files are not within i386 directory as this part of Your windows installation...

I'm not sure how / why this is illegal as I have a valid COA for MCE 2005 affixed to the bottom of my laptop. All I am doing is using an alternate method of installing it. The way HP has it setup should be illegal as far as I'm concerned.

It sorta is, the second link(if am reading it correctly) talks about converting XP Pro to media center without buying MCE/owing a license. I'm sorry, but it is our policy is to delete such posts.

You will have to install the Microsoft UAA device drivers befreo installing the audio & modem drivers. Search for softpaq #SP32646 on HP's website.

    thank you so much!
For those who are looking for a sound and modem solution because they deleted their swsetups...then simply
Download Microsoft UAA Device Driver (softpaq number SP32646) found here- ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32646.exe
then new devices will appear in device manager you will be able to install the sound and modem drivers downloaded from the HP site.

i deleted the swsetup folder, will restoring with either the burned-off recovery dvd's or the recovery partition restore everything to its original factory settings. I ask this because HP quickplay is not out for download and i want to be able to follow these instructions for a clean installation of windows xp.

    Thanks!

Yeah, as long as you have the restore discs you can put the system back to factory state & as has been mentioned the istallation files for the default drivers/software are located in the SWSetup folder. Back this up as well and re-installing QP shouldnt be a problem.

followed the steps and everything works out great except one thing. I got the quickplay buttons to work, but when i push 'mute' and the 'volume up/down' buttons, the word "mute" and the volume bar doesnt appear on the screen anymore. Anyone else having this problem?

    Thanks!

nvm, i downloaded the lastest update of the HP quickplay buttons and it works.

Hey chi, great guide, one side note on step 22 though, i downloaded the latest driver from synaptics.com and it disable my ability to use the middle click (right and left mouse buttons at the same time), but after uninstalling and reinstalling the version from the swsetup/touchpad everything went back to normal. Just thought you should know so you can maybe add a sidenote in your guide or something.

Thanks again for this excellent guide!

hey thanks alot that's a great guide there. Although I found that this took me alot longer than I initially expected and basically have been tinkering with it all day to get everything up and running, I think my install cd was just kind of old though. So in the end for some reason I can't get the conexant HD audio driver installed it gives me "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the Media device for this driver." On top of that I have two yellow question marks in device manager and im not exactly sure what they are one is "Universal Serial Bus controller" and the other is "PCI device". As this is my first time installing windows by myself any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm also pretty sure I installed the MS UAA HD audio driver thing as well so im at a bit of a loss now.
    Thanks much in advance

    Sincerely,
    Sabo

dunno if anyone else is having this problem, but after the reinstall, my 'power properties' stopped working. Currently, i have: when computer is: plugged in, turn off monitor: AFTER 10 MINS, and turn off hard disks: AFTER 20 MINS. However, after waiting past the time and even longer, the monitor never turns off, though the screensaver still works, and the hard drives are running as well. Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this? I've been doing some minor googling, but have found no solutions to this particular problem...

    Thanks in advance!

Hey could you please tell me how to reinstall vista on a dv2000z with vista premium preinstalled?. since the newer dv2000z's have vista premium preinstalled instead of XP and the SwSetup folder lacks some files that the XP ones had.

Hey guys, I've got a dv6448 that I'm trying to reformat to XP using this guide. I copied all the c:\SwSetup files and reinstalled XP, but at step 10 (install directplay...), I'm stuck. The SwSetup file does not have an HPQPDP directory and if I skip it to step 11 (install quickplay...) the setup returns an error saying the driver is for Vista only. Anyone know where I can get these drivers? I looked on the HP support website for the dv6000z Laptop and got many drivers, but not the quickplay ones. any help would be appreciated.

The HPQPDP(Quickplay direct) folder is only available if your system shipped with Windows XP. Since your system shipped with Vista you wont have that functionality. HP doesnt offer the Quickplay software for download but there are other sources from where you can download if you really want to. Also your system has Quickplay version 3.0 which only supports Vista. You will need Quickplay ver 2 if you want to install in XP.

I deleted the 1028MB partition for QuickPlay before installing XP Pro. Can I just create a partition after install and then install QP without issue?

Yeah, just make sure it is exactly 1028MB and do not format the partition. Just leave it as unpartitioned space and the Quickplay installer will do the rest for you.

Could I use this thread as a guideline to reformating and doing a clean install on my DV6100Z (DV6000 is the same right)?

Yeah, other than setting up Quickplay direct the steps to do a clean install of XP on the AMD dvx00Z systems are pretty straight forward. The drivers are available on HP's website or you can download them off of the manufacturers website and there is no need to worry about slistreaming SATA drivers etc.
