I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my HP DV2000t Core Duo 1.83 laptop and I am having battery drain issues. If I charge the laptop before bedtime, when I resume from Hibernation I have all ready lost 20% to 30% of my battery life. I did not have this issue with Windows XP Pro, I could leave the laptop in hibernation for weeks and I would only have 2% to 3% battery loss. Could my system be resuming at night to download data for Windows Media Center, or any other tasks using the system timer.
I did an experiment with my system by changing the HD out with my old drive (with Windows XP still on it) and again I only had 1% battery loss overnight. I am using BOis version F23, and I did us the HP Battery Check which should my battery to be in good condition almost new, Storage Capacity Bar shows High.
I did search for other threads which should a mysterious complete drain over night, but nothing close to my situation. I am still getting pretty good battery life, and I am not having the dreaded 'Always On Fan' others are reporting, as long as I am using the "Power Saver" option.

are you sure your putting it into hibernation and not standby? Its probably just another one of vista's bugs and will be fixed in a while.
-
Windows Vistas' default is stand-by. Unless you changed it to hibernation otherwise I have no clue. When I installed Vista Ultimate I had no problems with power drain.
-
Trust me, I am hibernating not using suspend mode!
-
I just received a replacement battery from HP, and while my overall battery runtime is much better, I am still losing 8% battery life over a 24 hour period while the unit is turned off, is this normal? It does not seem right that after 10 days of not being used the battery will be completely drained.
-
so with this new batt and leaving the comp in hibernation or stand by for 24hrs?
just want to get things straight before i say anything ... -
I always use sleep since it shut the computer off but also boots up in about 10 secs
-
junkstuff,
I have tried shutting it completely down (off) and using hibernation but the results seem to be the same, I am still losing 8% every 24 hours.
SBR, if you are using the Sleep Mode in Vista, it is using hybrid sleep, in which Vista saves the contents of the memory to the HD and puts the computer into standby, if all power is lost you will be able to resume via hibernation. -
i havent religiously kept track of the % i lose from sleep or hibernate, but 8% doesnt seem tooo much....
-
I do not have the same issue, I do have a 12 cell. I do not know if that makes any difference. Even if I lose 8% every 24, I don't think it would be a big deal for me as I can charge my laptop in the car if I have to.

I just tried resetting the BIOS and I checked the 'Event Log' and Scheduler in Vista and it showed the system ran a Schedule update for Media Center (Guide Update), even though I had my unit hibernated. Seems to me that Windows is able to set the event timer in the BIOS to turn the computer on even from hibernation. I disabled all schedule events and will know in 24 hours if the problem is solved.

im having the same problem also, im on a dv6000t.

I just happened to be near my HP laptop at 10:30 last night and sure enough out of the blue my laptop turns on (It was in hibernation at the time) and Media Center starts updating the TV Guide. I thought I had turned this event off in the Task Scheduler, but was still enabled, I am going to wait another 24 hours to see if the laptop is still draining power, before I send it off to HP for repair.

Same issue.
New dv200t
Vista Home Premium
12 cell battery
set to sleep on closing lid
Battery completely drained in the morning
Should I change my settings? -
It is Windows Media Center, it has the ability to turn your machine on from Standby and Hibernation. You need to either disable all items in the Task Scheduler(under Administrative Tools in Control Panel) under Microsoft/Windows/Media Center or you can disable all download from Media Center by starting it up going into Settings/General/Automatic download Options and set it to manual. You will have to go back into this screen and click the Download Now button to update the guide, but you will have full control over you laptop again.
-
I recalibrated the battery, set all download options to manal in media center and when i woke up this morning battery was completely drained again.
I realised I did not do the Task scheduler part properly, so I'll try that again tonite.
Where is the windows log to see what the computer did overnite?
Do you know of any other programmes that might run unknowingly overnite? -
Check your Event Viewer(Administrative Tools) Application and Services Log / Media Center. The source for the guide download is ehSched. I have not been able to figure out how to use the Task Scheduler to download the guide during the day or at a longer interval.
