Having trouble using the Firewire port in my new HP DV2000t--no recognition that my digital video camera (Sony HC-40) is connected through the just purchased 4-4 pin cable. No problem connecting the camera to the desktop via the 6-4 cable. The camera does not require any drivers to operate on a PC. The IEEE hub in the device manager shows no issues. The Windows add new hardware troubleshooter is of no help. Any ideas what might be at issue? Anyone tried using a firewire port on their HP DV2000t or other models and encountered similar problems?

I went to a local Best Buy to test whether my camcorder would have trouble connecting to their HP dv2000t via firewire. No problem. What can be wrong with mine then?

This is a pure guess: Look in Device Manager for your Firewire Port/Controller, select it and right click for Properties, check to see that it's working correctly, and at the bottom check to ensure that the port is enabled versus disabled.

Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned in the first message, neither the Device Manager nor the troubleshooter show any issues--and of course the port is enabled and the drivers are updated. My hope was that the problem was with the 4-4 pin cable, but after going to the store and seeing that it works with the same notebook there, the problem must lie with my laptop.

I know this may be a hassle, but at this point I suggest you take everything back to the store: your laptop, the 4/4 cable, the 6/4 cable, and your camera/recorder, and try it all again there with your laptop and the store's laptop, one more time before waving the white flag on you new laptop. This way you can positively isolate the source of the problem: cable, camera, or laptop, and go from there for the right remedy.
