I checked out the HP DV2000t in a few stores and they all had a noticeably darker screens than Toshiba, Acer, and most others laptops.
The HP screens were the SEC2xxx brands. While the much brighter Acers were SEC4xxx or 6xxx model screens. The HP looked great except the screen was the darkest of all the notebooks and brightness was already maxed out. I checked this in a few different stores and it was the same.
Anyone know if the CTO brands have brighter screens or other screen brands shipping?

I have a HP dv8000t CTO NB. It has a really bright screen. I dont think that HP screens are darker, compared to Acer/Toshiba/Sony/Dell.
While configuring, you could go for the UltraBrightView screen option, offered by HP. -
I have a dv2000t and let me tell you there is nothing dark about this screen. Really bright. I wonder if the brightness was turned down on the one you saw at the store. You do that by pressing 'fn' +' f7' or 'f8'
-
I have compared a HP and a Sony and must say they are equally bright, though there was XBRITE on the Sony and ULTRABRITE on the HP.
-
I'm talking about the DV2000T/Z model.
There was a Toshiba and an Acer side by side with the HP. And the Brightness was maxed out on both. I lowered and raised the brightness on all of them to see that I was pressing the right buttons.
This is really strange because the difference was very noticeable and this was on 3 DV2000t's at 3 different stores.
DV2000T can you please tell us what BRAND of screen you have. If you do right click on the dekstop and go to properties ->Settings -->Advanced -->>> choose GM950 (the big tab) and click on Display Information or Show configuration in the blue type of screen... The serial number will start with some letters thats the brand and model of the screen.
Also the SEC screen seems grainy/dusty effect when you view it in the white background insted of clear white color. Is your white background show any grainess or is it actually clear? -
Hey qweqwe. To be honest with you I'm really surprised at your post. I bought my DV2000T a week ago and let me tell you the screen is one of the best features of it. That's the first thing people mention when they see my baby. I checked the manufacturer as you asked and it's 'AU Optronics'. Also, I believe somebody in here mention that AUO only supplies for the CTO (Custom to Order) laptops while Quanta, Samsumg and LG does for the pre-configured that you find in the stores.
When looking at an all black or white background, the screen looks very uniform and nice. NOw, I'm sure some people might find something in there but as a regular user I'm tellling you it looks good.
Hope this helps. -
i had to lower the brightness about 3 notches as its way too bright at full blast.
-
I wanted to order this notebook but after looking at it in the stores the it looked really dark but I think its because of the SEC lcd screen. Looks like the CTO are good.
Hey domo do you also have the AUO screen?
Thanks. -
HP goes the Dell way now. They use whatever components from different suppliers they can get hold of, so there is no guarantee which screen you will get. I saw both SEC and QDS screens in dv2XXX in the retail stores. The former sucks, the latter is beautiful, but you won't know it until you unpack it.
-
I will 2nd what this poster said about the DV2000t screen. Maybe we both went to the same store (CC at Union Sq in NYC??), but the DV2000 there was DEFINITELY darker at brightest setting than the DV8000 and of course darker than Sony. Maybe it's not true for other people on here, but the main reason I decided not to order the dv2000t (and instead opted for the dv5000t) was seeing the screen at that store.
-
Edit: I take it back. CTOs also ships with QDS display. I just got mine and it has QDS one and it's absolutely stunning. I had Dell 1405 with a Samsung screen and it was crappy even after a replacement, so I sold it. -
Can somebody please share with me how I can tell what type of screen I have? I have a CTO Dv2000t, t2500, 7200 through costco. I don't get the same options and tabs as indicated on this thread probably because of the different gpu.
The reason I'm asking is everyone is raving about the screen on the dv2000's (especially the CTO's) but my screen seems dingy. It's not bad at all but in comparison w/ my sisters Dell Inspiron 600m, the Dell seems to have a whiter, white.
Also I'm new to working w/ a GPU so maybe it's just a setting or something.
TIA

For what it's worth.... my dv2000's screen is so bright that I have to turn it down when i'm working on my desktop machine with my laptop nearby, otherwise it's too distracting for me to focus on my 19' CRT!
-
The dell is brighter coming from the lamp and the whites seem whiter but,
the dv2000 screen is clearer and more crisp and with many colors being more vibrant.
I'd like to know if the dingy or light dusty overlay is because of my screen brand or if its just me. I have nvidia 7200 if anybody could point me in the wright direction I'd much appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mike -
yes, how do u tell what LCD panel u have? thanks.

For what it's worth, I purchased from Fry's, and I happened to have a meeting outdoors today. It was 88 degrees outside in Los Angeles today, and both of us (myself and the person I was meeting with) had no trouble viewing my dv2000t's screen outdoors.
I DID position my laptop so that there was a solid wall behind me (to minimize the reflective trait of the screen) but as far as brightness, this thing performed great!
As other's have mentioned, the screen is one of the features I really like about my dv2k. Guess HP uses different screens, can't understand why the original poster would complain about a dark screen, otherwise. -
Can anyone tell me if the dv2000t have the same bright/glossy screen like Sony's screens?
and what's the life span for HP's bright screen? I've seen Sony's screen die down a bit in their brightness so I'm not sure if HP is realiable in that area.

Today, I got my third dv2000.... Yes, I got some problem with previous dv2000s(keyboard and instability problems) and I returned them and this is my third one.
Two dv2000s which I returned were dv2000z and the third one is dv2000z
( without webcam and with go 7200) other than that, almost same configuration ( yup.. processors are different also)
The thing is.... my third one is darker than previous two laptops....differences are noticible.. ( my work experience in display devices company helped..) so I checked the manufacturer of the LCD panel... It was samsung.... I didn't check the manufacturer for previous returned laptops but I think those were not samsung... -
One more thing...
Yes.. It is not good(darker than previous lcds)... but good news is.. this lcd panel has less reflection I think... As you all know, matte screen and bright screen are exactly same except the polarizing film which is attached on the lcd panel. ( by attaching this polarizing film, you can transmitt more light from the backlight unit) I think samsung sacrifice brightness to decrease reflection I think.....
Anyways, I am sick and tired of returning and reordering...So.. this time I will keep this one for at least 2 years... -
Bart, since you also have the dv2000t w/ 7200 would you mind sharing your steps to determining the type of screen you have?
Thanks,
Mike -
Mike... to determine the manufacturere of the lcd..
start ----- my computer ----- right click ----- properties --- left click
---hardware ----device manager----- monitor----plug and play monitor---
double click ---- details tab
for my monitor, it says SEC 4242
Hope it helps -
Thanks Bart! That's what I was looking for. Mine says QDS005C
-
Yes thats the same SEC screen as in stores. Its just bad.
-
I just looked at a Compaq V3000 in a Costco store, and it had the AUO screen, which looked good to me. It seemed comparable to the other HP and Toshiba laptops nearby.
