Hi,
I have a friend's HP DV2700 series laptop here with a display problem. The LCD works fine, as the VGA output too. But it seems that the backlight does not work. (I can see the display while having a flashlight pointed at it)
I know that it may be the backlight itself or the inverter... But I was wondering how can I diagnose where is the problem exactly as I don't want to buy parts that I don't need.
Any input appreciated!

unless you have a spare invertor its hard to tell. you can check the voltage coming out to the blacklight. if theres none then its the invertor
my guess is its the backlight as ive had a bunch of dv2000 and the back lights were all dead. but go with the easiest to replace first(the invertor) -
Thanks for the help.
If it's the backlight, that means I have to change the display panel completely right? -

More likely it's a stuck lid switch. That's very common on the dv2000 series. There's a great walkthrough on how to disconnect the switch in this forum.

I suggest you unplug the lid switch first. If that doesn't do it, then replace the inverter. If that doesn't do it, think long and hard about going the cheap(er) route with a new backlight, or just buy a new display.

Thanks everybody.
Could someone point me out to the lid switch assembly guide on the forum? Either I am blind or I cannot find it. -

I did the fix and unplugged the switch wires and nothing. I ordered an inverter and we'll se by then.

Just installed the inverter with no luck. Nothing has changed.
This means I need a new display? -
My friend just told me that his screen worked at some point 1 or 2 days after it originally failed, I don't know if this can help me diagnose the problem.
Can a broken screen/backlight can sometimes work rarely in a random fashion? -

A failing backlight can draw enough additional power to fry an inverter. Usually that's not the case, but it's possible. I ran across one notebook where one of the wires connected to the CCFL had broken off and was making intermittent contact. Most likely you need a new backlight or whole new panel. Backlights are tricky to replace and require soldering. I'd seriously think about selling the notebook as broken on eBay and rolling the money into a new machine, especially given HP's recent model refresh, in large part because broken screens have given me more grief than anything other than defective NVIDIA chips.

So I guess it's time to order a new LCD screen?

Yup.
If that dv2700 has a NVIDIA GPU I wouldn't put any more money into it. Sooner or later that chip is going to fail.
