Hey guys. I'm pretty much ready to order the HP DV3T notebook, but one thing that confuses me is the processor. I want a very fast processor, so initially i was going to get the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9550 (2.66 GHz). However, i did some research and i found that the P series processors are more efficient than the older T series, thus using less power and have a faster FSB. The next fastest P series processor you can get with the DV3T is the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz). I went on Intel's website, and if I read correctly, the P8700 and the T9550 are both 45nm, and have the same FSB (1066Mhz). However, the P8700 has 3mb L2 cache, and the T9550 has 6mb L2 cache.

Basically what im asking is what processor is the better one? Money isn't a factor, so I just want the better processor. All these numbers are confusing me, and i dont know what exactly i should be getting here.

    Thanks!

The T9550 is better in terms of performance (you'll probably only notice in benchmarks), but the P8700 will cooler and give you more battery life.

If you're after performance, get the T9550.
If you value battery life, get the P8700. I would personally choose this one since it's already a zippy CPU.

The T and P processors are of the same generation, they differ by power consumption and cache size and speed.

The P8700 has 3mb L2 cache and the T9550 has 6mb L2 cache. Is that anything significant? And what's your opinion on which processor is the better choice?

I own two of the same model laptop (Dell Latitude E6400), one for work and the other for personal use. One has the P8600 and the other has the 2.53GHz P9500 (same as P8700 but with 6mb L2). I'm a demanding user, but I can't discern any real-world differences. They're both great performers.

It's kinda like choosing a car based on top speed, even though a similar has an almost identical 0-60 time and gets better gas mileage (for less money). Go with the P8700!

BTW, if you aren't already aware, there's an HP Coupon for an additional $250 off the dv3t priced $1199+ (original price). This is "stackable", meaning it doesn't take the place of the $150 "Instant Rebate" already offered. Use Coupon Code NB4578 at Checkout to get the deal!

Thanks for information and the coupon code! Really appreciate it.

Also, thanks to the others who posted, I'll be purchasing the P8700 2.53 GHZ. It seems the difference in speed wont be really noticeable, and what I save in power/running temperatures seems much more worth it.
