There is a varying frequency buzzing noise coming from the top left corner of the DV4000 notebook, right were the power plugs in. This is a hpshopping.com customized, with Pentium M 1.73GHz, 915GM and the new DDR2/533Mhz memory.

You can only hear it under certain circumstances, like under XP Home when installing programs or running 3dmark, but not when the machine is just idling. When booting and running the system with the latest Linux Knoppix boot cd the sound is there all the time, even during idle. Under Linux, turning off the thermal and processor modules (rmmod thermal ; rmmod processor) causes the noise to go away. But during network transfers, the noise is back. Under network transfers in XP there is no noise.

I took the Knoppix CD and went to Best Buy to listen to some of their DV4000s. A celeron DV4000 and Pentium M 725 1.6 did not have it, but a Pentium 740 1.73GHz like mine with the "older" DDR1 did the same thing.

My guess would be something with the power regulator depending on load and features used. Wireless on/off does not seem to matter.

Anyone else with the same problem or a solution? Under just Windows XP and no load it is not there, but using the Knoppix cd it is loud and clear. Or when running games/programs under XP.

I have the new dv4000 (1GB+256MB DDR2 RAM, 2.0Ghz PM), and have tried Knoppix. I didn't notice any buzzing.

I have the the same issue, with new x700 Dv4000. Contacted Hp Support, and they listened and have asked for me to send the unit in for repairs... so off it goes tomorrow.

Which version of Knoppix was it? Have you done any network transfers by any chance while in Linux? This 1.73GHz machine here only has the stock 256MB DDR2. It does have the bluetooth, but I don't think the 1.73GHz one at Best Buy that had the same high pitch buzzing in Knoppix had bluetooth.

Just wanted to post an update on this. I have since heard the same buzzing problem on an identically configured dv4000 and even a dell (2.0ghz), all with the Pentium 740. I think it is a generic problem with some dothan pentium m motherboards. The buzzing depends on the power load. Just some resonating electrical component. Perhaps some nonconductive electrical paste on the component would silence it, but I don't really care about it anymore.
