I just got a new HP dv4t in the mail from costco for a great deal.

I have been using it for about 3 days now and was curious about temps.

I use 3 different programs to monitor them and they all reported the same thing.....core 0 at 55 C and core 1 at 60 C. All I am doing is browsing online. My hard drive temp is at 40 C. Ambient temp in the room is 68 F.

From reading through the dv4t owner's thread, my CPU temps seem outrageously high.

I do not have a notebook cooler. I shouldn't need one for browsing the internet.

I even have my bios option for "fan always on" enabled. When I disable it the temps don't even fluctuate.

The fan is also kinda annoying.

    Are my temps normal?

That does seem a little high but nothing too crazy I think. My guess is that all those background HP services are slowing down your system and kicking your CPUs into overdrive. Try turning off some background services and startup items by running msconfig through the Run command. Check out the NBR .Vista Tips and Tweaks Guide for more details. I'd remove all that HP junk that came with it to speed up the system a bit.

I took off all of the junk.

I turned the laptop off. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Disable "fan always on" in bios to see if my temps would go any higher. The temps actually dropped 6 deg.

Is there a program that can control your fan for when it turns on. When you have the option enabled in bios the fan is the most annoying thing EVER. But when you have it disabled, and you open up itunes for example, it will kick on for 15 seconds then turn off.

Anyone have a cure to keep the fan quieter?

Unfortunately, you can't do anything about the fan noise. I have a problem with it as well so I disabled the "fan always on" setting in the BIOS. That's really the most you could do...while it doesn't cure the noise, at least you don't hear it as much now.

A few people have reported that their CPU usage and temperatures drop significantly after doing a clean Vista install so you could look into that if you're interested to take it further.

both DV5t and DV7t have this problem: when disabled always on from bios, fan runs for 5 seconds then stop for 5 seconds then repeat again. temp is around 60c at idle and 70c at load. sony, dell laptops temp are 45c at idle and 60d at load

but some other time, DV5t fan run longer until it reach 45C then stop for longer. this is how other laptops work but HP is weird. HP fan runs with no particular pattern.

I think HP BIOS fan logic is flaw and stupid. even cheap Gateway laptop do a better job. HP got their own BIOS and impliment differently. why start the fan and run only 2 seconds? then constantly start and stop. why not run longer and stop longer like a house AC.

Mine doesn't really run for 2 seconds, stop, and then run again for 2 seconds. I think it's pretty decent...it kicks in, runs for a few seconds, and stops for a while. But yes, HP is terrible in the cooling department overall.
