For the past few weeks Ive been having a flickering screen with grey horizontal lines. Now the screen is totally dead, unless its nearly closed then the screen appears and lights up, BUT when I look closely I can see whats on the black screen, its like someone has turned off the lights!...Ive heard this is an issue with the HP DV series...any suggestions what I could do....Ive been quoted over $500 to have it repaired if its the screen and $230 for a new cable...Ive seen them on ebay for MUCH cheaper...how hard is it to replace??
    PS...an external monitor works fine.
    Could it be the backlight?

Probably it is the backlight, and most probably you have a problem with the backlight inverter. If you're able, you can change it yourself finding a new one from ebay.
