i used rivatuner 2.24 and evga precision 1.14 (the latest from guru3d)
    and followed each step
when i select the new clocks and hit apply the pc will restart after showing me some weird stuff and coloured pixels (is it normal??)
after the restart when i re-enter evga precision it shows me my original clocks 400/800/400
    what's wrong?

More than likely your memory clock is too high...

You need to slowly increase each clock separately testing each one. I used ATITOOL and 3dMark06 to look for artifacts or other video issues. I spent hours testing until I settled on my speeds.

Everyone will have different clock speeds. I run mine at 600/1300/500. I could not get my memory clocks above 515 without seeing artifacts and other video issue when I was using ATITOOL.

Thanks, that has helped half my problem.
I have a HP 1050TX with a 9600GT but it will only let me clock the GPU to 500mhz and the Memory slider ALWAYS jumps back to 400Mhz when i click "OK"
I have tried several different drivers.

The Shader clock is fine and i can move it and it stays.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Sorry if it has been asked before but I have been looking everywhere and cant find an answer.

It also happens with EVGA (in using rivatuner now)

    Cheers.

    Need to ask...

    - what version RivaTuner are you using?
    - what driver version are you using?

I had issues with the HP supplied drivers but have had no issues with the DOX 181.22 drivers with Rivatuner 2.22.

I have not tried the new Nvidia supplied notebook drivers.

I got it working now, Sorry to trouble you.
It was my own stupidity and inability to read thing printed in bold like the correct bios to use. :(

I did have a question for Eason specifically though.
I have my clocks at 650/1350/480, but if i change the memory clock from 480 to 500 it will play for awhile but then seems to lock up.
Funny lock up thought, the compter still works, if i press the power button Windows shuts normally but I alt-tab or anything its just stuck in the game.
Eason you said you had a simular issue with the same memory clock speed too, later I saw you posted your now clocked at 518 for your memory.
    How did you overcome this?

    Cheers.

The reason is that your display adapter (GPU) has crashed from a high memory clock, and so it isn't updating your screen properly. Thus, everything else is still working fine, but you can't see it. Here's what I would try: Adjust slowly- Try 486, then bump the clocks up 2-3mhz at a time, testing each clock with an hour or so of gaming. I'd recommend a source engine game, they're the first to ever crash on me. It might have been that I slowly upped my clocks (at675/1600/522 memory actually but any higher gets me occasional crashes in L4D) or it might be the new bios/drivers software overclocking and Windows 7, I can't say for sure, but I'm happy. :) Good luck!

    Thanks Eason!
I actually think its a heat issue with the memory.
When i was holding the laptop in the air the temp was nice and cool and ran fine at 500+mhz, after about one minute on the desk it started getting artifacts and then locked up.
I was using the Dox drivers but i might try another just out of curiosity and see how it goes. Seems we are the 2 unlucky ones on this thread that have "dud" cards :p

First time i connected , a menu appeared for i select if wanted copy my desktop etc.. But the problem is all is cropped on LCD because it is 16:9.

I've followed all the normal steps to overclock my 9600gt on myt HDX18t. Everything seems fine - no artifacts that I can see, but when I run tests like 3DMark06 or 3DMarkVantage the screen will crash randomly and I'll get an error that the graphics stopped responding and the problem has been repared. I can't figure out which of the settings is causing this. I'm currently set on 663/1503/513 and the standard 179.04 driver. Anyone got any ideas?

I would bring the core clock down. Say to 600 first.

The key is to test each clock speed in increments of 5Mhz to 10Mhz. Testing each time with 3dmark and/or ATITOOL. Take it slow and easy... I spend 2 nights tweaking mine till I found my ideal speeds that I was alright with using.

For me I started with the core, so I left the memory speed at 400 and slowly brought up the core/shader clocks (as I left them linked). 400, 450, 475, 490, 500, ect... I maxed out at 650 but i run it at 600.

Then it was time for the memory... I maxed out at 515 but clock it at 500Mhz.

Bottom line, one of your clocks is to high and needs to come down.

If I remember correctly the 3D performance default clocks are 500/1000/400. So you should be able to start at 500 and work your way up. Remember to keep your memory clock set while you find the max core speed. I ran ATITOOL for about 5-10 minutes looking for artifacts and then ran 3dmark 06 looking for video issues. Once you see video issues stop, that is your max clock speed. Now bring it down 5Mhz or 10Mhz and then start adjusting the memory speeds.

Since you stated your speeds to be 663/1503/513 I would bring down the memory clocks to 500 and the core to around 650 and start there. If you still have issues with artifacts or crashes bring those speeds down even more and re-test. Then you can start adjusting one clock at a time till you find the max.

I also created a low clock setting of 200/400/200 and applied these clock speeds as the "Startup Settings". i use these for everyday work (ie web surfing, email, Office apps). When i want to play a 3D app I manually adjust the clocks using the Launcher feature of RivaTuner to load the new clock speed profile. (you can save multiple clock speed settings using the "Overclocking Profile Settings" option)

Finally, it has been my opinion that the "harder" you overclock a video card the shorter its life "could" be. I would suggest only overclocking when you need to.

    HAPPY OVERCLOCKING :D

I have changed my drivers to the advised DOX's 180.70 Before any overclocking my 3DMark06 score has dropped from 4300 with the regular Nvidia drivers, to 3700 with the new DOX drivers, is this normal?

    NO!

What is the max temp you received while running ATI Tool???

I would guess you do not have adequate cooling or the ratio between the clocks is off. Sometimes cards will artifact (even if they are low) when not at a certain ratio.

For example the Dv5t standard clocks are 500/1250/400. Lets say you lowered the memory clock to 300, and received artifacts. Technically the clock is lower but the card performs best when at a 400 memory clock -- so if you lowered the memory clock to 300 you would ideally want to lower all the clocks accordingly.

Max temp of 68 C looks good. What did the artifacts look like? Small dots indicate that the memory clock is the problem and polygon looking one indicate the shader clock is the problem.

The GF9600 is not shader locked, there is no performance hit or benefit other than having higher clocks.

i tried lots of core\shader clock combinations but i guess 9700m gt clocks (625\1550) have enough performance and good stability . but about memory clock i'm very confused . should i set as high as it can ,or an avarage clock is enough . i got 5770 points with dox's 182.05 performance drivers with 625\1550\522 and 6100 points with 655\1650\570 .

The highest one. Faster mhz is always faster than slower mhz on the same architecture. the 128bit bus mostly just makes the 512 mb of ram useless, it doesn't mean faster memory won't be faster.

180.70 were the reccomended drivers on the origianal post at the start of the thread. I am now using Dox 181.22 without issues.

Still I do wonder is there any way to OC without having to force constant performance?

I created an account just to say thank you for this guide and the people that posted along with it. I was able to overclock using the latest hp bios and using ntune. I had to do everything this guide said but when i went to set the clocks with rivatuner or evga it wouldn't work so i tried ntune like someone recently suggested and it worked. i am not getting an average of 70 fps in cod4. oh i am also using Dox's 182.46 driver found here

i spoke to fast i think...gpu-z shows my clocks have changed but i have not noticed any increase in fps really. my fps increased but i think that was just from using doxs driver. i really did not want to downgrade the bios but i will now and let u know if i had any luck...seems that this thread might be abandoned

OK so i followed the guide and i am able to apply to clocks but i have a problem. Riva tuner and EVGA precision think my default clocks are 400 800 400 but i know the default clocks are 500/1250/400 so i can only push the clocks the shader clock up to 1280. any1 else having this problem? how can i set the upper limit higher?

Ok i tried this guide on my HP DV5 with 9600gt ddr2 but i am not happy about the result as i can't overclock more than 600 (gpu) 1200 (shaderclock) and max 500 on memory if i try 510 i have already interlaced lines on screen :) the gpu and shader if i try at 650 1300 games run well but after some time the computer blocks(30min max 1 hour) and i have to force it shutdown the maximum temperature i've seen after 1h of crysis is 73 C so this is not the problem...is my video card faulty or somethig? why others can oc the memory even at 570 ..can i do something to make it go higher? Thanks in advance for help

PS. My default clocks on the videocard are 500(gpu) 1200(shaderclock) 400(memory) and the video driver i use is 182.05 dox customized laptop bios version is the latest F14 or so. Excuse me for my english

You need the F.05 BIOS, or the F.11 BIOS (others have said it works but I have not tried it for myself).

    Go here:

    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=dv5t&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

And then select your DV5t model (its on a sticker on the bottom of your notebook) and your OS. To the right of the BIOS download there should be a link labeled "Version" underneath the "Previous" column -- and then just pick the F.05 or F.11 BIOS version.

Remember go slow with the overclocking...then when you have found a stable overclock stress it with ATI Tool to look for artifacts.

    Hope this helps!
