I have 2GBs of ram...I know this is low but still vista is only showing 65% usage ... but even with 35% free a lot of programs become unresponsive forcing me to close and re-open them every couple hours to get them to work as well as programs becoming unresponsive programs take quite a while to open up...it is really peeing me off... how can I fix this? I didn't do a "clean install" so if someone wants to walk me through how to do that or any other way to get my computer running like a champ please tell me how!

Clean install is simple. You basically re-install vista using a clean Vista DVD. There's a sticky in the list. Also check out the Vista tweaks guide in the windows section.

How long have you had the laptop? Did this just suddenly start happening?
Vista clean install guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228 -
less then a month?...I dont think it was this bad...at first but yea...i have already checked for viruses and all the other goodies
-
How about software? What software did you install?
Also did you check the Power management features? Maybe it somehow went to power savings feature. Make sure (if you are plugged in) to run with Performance or Balanced -
ooo that could have been the problem...I changed it and I guess we'll see if that did the trick....is there anyway to get it to default to high performance when plugged in and when on battery have it default to power save?
also on the clean install my computer didnt come with any discs....how would I go about doing it? so i make the disc on my computer via the one time "Recovery Disc Creation" ??? -
Yes, make sure you create those discs. You're going to need two blank DVDs for that.
Now, the only way to switch between power plans automatically is that you install a program that will do that
. There is a good program recommended in the Vista tweaks guide in this forum, called Vista Battery Saver. It will switch between different power modes and even toggle on/off Aero automatically (and it's also customizable, it won't just force these changes on you).
I'm sorry I can't give you the link but I don't have enough posts yest. It's in Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion > Hardware, Software and Accessories > Windows OS > NBR Vista Tips and Tweaks Guide and Software. There's a lot more tips to speed up your system in that thread as well. -
I don't believe there is a way to do it with out a third party utility. My IBM thinkpad has software you can configure. HP seems to use the default Vista power management
The recover disc won't give you a clean install, it'll restore everything to when you opened the box, bloatware included. Check out the stickied thread at the top of this particular forum about clean install.
You'll need some sort of Vista disk at the very minimum
Good luck! -
Let us know if that was the problem.
Also, you can check out this guide to tweak vista a bit to improve performance:

Is there something different with those other programs instead of changing the power options in vista power plans?
CP > Power options > change plan settings >change advanced power settings > Processor power management >Settings for battery and plugged in.
Why not just set the "balanced plan" to use low settings when on battery and high settings when plugged in? You can use this plan almost always. Only use the high power when you want to force the computer to stay on high setting when you are on battery and want speed instead of battery life.
Once you have these plans set up, rapidly switch between them by clicking on the battery icon in the lower right hand corner. -
No but... You can set many different options whether Plugged In or running on Battery.
You could for example change all the settings for running on Battery to the same as the Power Save settings and although the Performance Plan doesnt physically change the effects will be the same.
1. Start>Control Panel>Power Options
2. Under Select a Power Plan Select any of the Change Plan Settings links.
3. Select Change advanced power settings link near the bottom of the window.
4. In the Advanced Settings window you can customize various settings, including Processor power Management, for different settings whether running plugged or on battery. -
I have a "anytime upgrade" disc I got with my toshiba during the Windows XP/vista compatible thing last year will that work?
-
It should work just fine as long as it is a true "anytime upgrade disc" and not something derived by Toshiba. i.e. Toshiba software on it that automatically runs.
-
oooo you know what...i dont think it lets you boot from the disc if i remmember correctly
-
I believe two blanks only if they are Dual Layer discs, otherwise it's three DVDs.
-
Two single layer DVDs were enough for me, I guess it's not the same for all models/regions.
-
Two regular (single layer) disks for me as well
-
wierd, i musta had more b l o a t w a r e than you all
