    Hello everyone,
I sure would appreciate any help you can give me here, The Problem:
On my dv6000 laptop with windows media center I decided this morning to use the pc recovery and revert the computer back to its original state, well I kinda got myself into quite a deal, I started the pc recovery and the computer restarted, and started to partition the hardrive(something like that, don't quite remember) and about 30% through I thought that it was taking a long time and so I shut the computer off(bad thing to do, I suppose) thinking that maybe it froze up or something, well I went to restart it and the hp boot up screen came on and then it came to a blank screen with a blinking cursor on the left hand top corner, I am able to go into the bios setup and I tested the harddrive and it passed, so I don't know what to do, Do you have any suggestions for me, I sure would appreciate any help you can give me, Thanks in advance, Jonathan

First, have you tried restarting the recovery process by pressing f10 or f11 (I forget which)? If not, disregard the following, for now. If you have, read on.

Sounds like the MBR is corrupted and it's doubtful the OS has been fully installed anyway, so you're pretty much screwed. Then again, maybe one of the good folks here has been through this identical situation and knows of a way to restart the recovery process without disks.

That said, for a mere $15, HP will send you a set of recovery disks that will restore your nb to it's original condition. Just call tech support and give them your model number and/or serial number.

For future reference, ALWAYS create a set of recovery disks as soon as you receive a new nb.

I would wait a day or so to see if anyone pipes in with a way to kickstart the recovery process. If I remember correctly, when initiating a recovery from the HDD, the recovery partition is not deleted, so it is still theoretically possible to proceed with the install. Give the group some time to digest your problem.

You may be able to sweet talk the tech rep into giving you a recovery set, but that remedy is totally dependent on your power of persuasion, since they usually don't supply them free, whether under warranty or not. Doesn't hurt to try though and you may get lucky. Just give him/her a sob story and let the games begin...

Well, if you had an XP CD you might as well just download the drivers from the website and start with a whole new fresh installation of XP. That's a much better ending than using the recovery wizard, and frees you from bloatware.

Your CD key on the bottom of the notebook should work if you are borrowing a friends disc I think. If it doesn't you may have to contact MS and try to get the media from them (and they'll ask you a few questions to prove you're a legit owner...but nothing bad).

    The short answer is yes.

Can we assume you've been successful? If so, make a copy of the recovery set you received from HP, so you'll have a back-up of your disks.

Next, become familiar with "System Restore" and creating and rolling back recovery points/checkpoints. Then, get yourself a good back-up program. My personal favorite is Acronis True Image, but some people swear by Symantec Ghost nee Norton Ghost. Ask around for suggestions.

Finally, read through the threads on how to create an XP setup disk from your recovery set. If you're really adventurous, learn slipstreaming. There's no need for all that crapware that HP supllies with your nb.

I have the same laptop and the first thing I did was create the 3 recovery dvds and I deleted the partition. I then installed Acronis Disk Image and made 2 dvds of the machine the way I wanted it to be. The acronis recovery method I installed has a smaller footprint and all I have to do is load the dvd if I want to restore the drive or some of the files. I now have two recovery options. I even burned the SWSetup folder.

When you first setup the laptop it tells you to make the recovery set first thing.

Windowbarn, don't know if you've already received your Windows disk, but I had this exact same problem last week. I have a Compaq, but I bet it's pretty much the same procedure. I called Customer Service and she just had me keep hitting f11 as soon as the computer began coming on. When I did that, it dropped me into PC Recovery mode and I easily recovered my computer. My applications were lost, but all my documents were still there. I was so happy, I thought my computer was really broken, but it was a really simple solution.
