Not sure of the hard drive make/model.

The hard drive makes a ticking/"chewing"/high pitched clicking noise that is very noticeable when it is seeking (HD light on). It is a bit louder than I have ever heard from a laptop.

This is a big problem because my wife uses it for class where there needs to be some quietness.

I did the preliminary of getting rid of the junk trial software and removing from startup at MSCONFIG those progs not necessary.
    Still had issues.

I then turned off (stopped) all running "Services" that I could in MSCONFIG.
I have also turned off 'Windows Defender', 'Firewall', and tried to stop 'Wndows Security' pop-up window.

The hard drive is less active and therefore less noisy so I must have done something correct.

She does not use this computer for internet but when we do login I will make sure AVG is running.

When she gets a break in school we want to take a look at getting another hard drive as a possible solution. I will see what is has in it and research it.

Which programs in Vista are hard drive intensive that "normally" run in the background?
Can I turn any progs back on in the "Service" tab in the CONFIG Utility without fear that the hard drive will start back up at rest?

Am I on the right track?
    Did I miss anything?

I've had two DV6000 series (AMD) systems and both of them had quiet hard drives. The noise should be a muffled clicking/grinding that should be barely noticeable over the noise from fan on low speed. If it's louder than the keyboard when typing or the touchpad when clicking the mouse buttons, then I would contact HP and ask for a replacement hard drive.

For the record, the model I have right now is a Fujitsu MHW2120BH SATA 120GB.

You can run HD Tune on it to see if there is anything wrong with the drive. If you asked, HP would probably send you a new one.
