    Hello!

There is a problem with my HP Pavilion DV6670 laptop which i bought on 10th january 2008, there is a clicking sound coming from the harddisk bay and its very annoying especially when in a quite room. It started coming just after a week when i bought it and when i ran the "Harddisk self test" in the BIOS it passed the harddisk but now after a month it gives the message to replace the harddisk. But the harddisk is working fine there is no problem in reading and writing of the data and even the benchmark result is almost same as it is mentioned in the specs provided by HP.

Further more I repartioned the Harddisk soon after i bought the laptop and also recoverd the VISTA two times due to some remote control problems which is working fine now. Can anybody tell me about the problems my Harddisk have and what are the possible solutions?
    I am really Worried!

    Thanks!

It is saying to replace the hard drive because bad sectors are starting to show up, most likely caused by the drive heads not working correctly and hitting the disk (thus damaging areas). Sure, it will work fine...for a while. And you'll slowly lose your data over time as the bits get damaged.

The solution is to backup your data to another disk and replace the drive.

    Thanks Greg

I will do the backup now but i cant replace the harddisk, its under warranty.
Plus its working fine so far so i m realy concerned about how long will it take to completly malfunction the hard disk and what would HP do about it if I sent it back to them?

    replace meant...replace under warranty....

and hp will replace your hard drive, but not necessarily your information. and they do not guarantee getting your info...ergo, better for you to do it. what will happen is...it will crash and your computer will no longer boot, due to all the bad sectors. i have a client with the same problem now, only they are paying about $500 to get their info back.

Have you run the SMART test yet? It should give you all the HDD health indicators.

There is a large "HDD clicking thread" somewhere on NBR. The clicking sound is caused by HDD head parking. You can get it to stop by adjusting the power settings on the HDD directly.

Case in point, the WD Scorpio has this as a known issue on their website, but their patch does not correctly address the problem.
