I just lost a very long post and I'm frustrated but here is a brief summary of my intended questions.
I get random crashes and the apparent crashes I get all relate to this error message:
Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (rtlh86.sys, rtlh64.sys)
This problem was caused by a missing driver for Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (rtlh86.sys, rtlh64.sys), which was created by Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
According to the spec sheet for my laptop and Hp's website this is what I have on my laptop: Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC rather than the 8168.
Could this conflicting information be the source of the problem? How come Windows shows a different NIC to the HP website? I've tried to download the driver off the Realtek website but I find the website frustratingly annoying and basically pants (for such a global player)!
Any clues? I need help!

BUMP!

You can go to HP's website and punch in your model number from the bottom of your laptop and get the drivers directly from HP. That should give you the exact version based on your serial/model number that you need. As far as why your drivers seem different I'd guess its just a installing a generic Realtek driver for a group of hardware instead of a model specific one.

Thanks Reby,
I've done just that and installed the driver from the HP website. However, I still got the BSOD error message and that prompted me to post as it didn't seem to sort the problem.
I've now downloaded the latest driver from the Realtek website so I'll wait and see what happens.
Read somewhere that a hardware failure posing as a driver issue can cause this. True? -
If hardware is failing it is possible that it would spit out a failed driver. Can you post the exact BSOD error message? Also go check your device manager and make sure you don't have any yellow ! marks or conflicts.

Press F11 while booting up your laptop to go to the Recovery Manager. Click "Advanced Options" and select "Hardware Driver Reinstallation" Install the required drivers from the lists and this will solve your problem.

Thanks Reby and E,
There are no yellow marks in device manager and there has never been.

Nothing's happened since I installed a driver from the RealTek site a few days ago, it could be weeks before the next one. I'll try the F11 thingy and see.
Thanks a lot.
