A friend of mine is considering an HP DV6t laptop. He needs to know if he should spend the $19 for the OS disk or not. Can he make his own system restore disk when he gets the laptop? Is there a difference between the disk they provide or the one you mak in the backup (if available)?

Nevermind, I just got off chat with HP, and they said you can make a recovery DVD which is the same as the one you can buy. Thanks for reply though.

You can make recovery dvd`s or you can make a recover flash drive , but you can only do one, and only once and then the feature is disabled.
