I'm working on an HP DV7 notebook computer that had red wine spilled into it. The owner said it was working fine and they turned in upside down and wine dripped out of it. At that point the LCD backlight went out and they brought the laptop to me. I took it apart and didn't see any wine residue on the motherboard. I noticed the Inverter had wine inside of the clear protective case. I replaced the inverter(twice) but the screen still won't illuminate. It appeared wine had also gotten inside of the LCD screen. I tried another LCD screen but it too would not illuminate. However, it works fine with plugged into an external monitor. I noticed the LCD video cable had a wine stain on the connector that connects to the inverter. I replaced the LCD video cable but the problem remained. So it appears the problem is with the motherboard. The PC boots and appears to be running fine but the LCD backlight does not come on. Can anybody shed any light(pun intended) on this problem? I realize the LCD screen gets its power supply from the inverter but the inverter gets its power from the motherboard. I suspect when the wine into the inverter and/or LCD screen, it shorted out a component on the motherboard that supplies the power to the inverter. Maybe this component is simply a fuse. I'm wondering if it's something that can identified and repaired. Replacing the motherboard is probably not cost effective for a laptop of this age. Does anyone know what component on the motherboard might have been affected and if it can be repaired? Or, if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

There is no fuse in it. Did you use rubbing alcohol to clean off the board and did you take the board completely out and clean all the components of any residue from the wine? It sounds possible the spill shorted out the connected that the LCD connects to and took out a important components involved with the LCD and what powers it. But that the problem is limited to the LCD side which would mean the board itself is working but the LCD components is most likely failed at this point in time. That is what I think at this point in time from what your describing the symptoms are.
