Can't really see much difference in these models....looking at Best Buy

Other than 17 vs 16 inch screen are their any benefits to build quality from 1 to the other?

I will be travelling so I would prefer the lesser HDX 16 incher but build quality is a concern

I travel by plane, train, bus every weekend so it needs to be able to handle a little beating

I would go with the dv7 because it has two hard drives and a normal sized number pad. Im not sure but i belive the hdx16t dosent have a subwoofer while Dv7t's do ( Dv7z's dont have a subwoofer. )

do you want a 16:10 ratio notebook (dv7) or a 16:9 ratio (dv6/HDX16) notebook? the former is more useful for work since the extra vertical pixels means less scrolling in a browser or a word document. the latter is more suited for digital media like widescreen tv shows and such, which will fill the screen and not have the flanking black bars. the dv7 does have an extra hard drive bay if that is a concern. everything else is basically the same. (yes, the hdx16 does have a sub). as for build quality, the HDX series is supposed to be the premium line of consumer notebooks from HP, so there should be no qualms here. then again, i might be biased since i own an HDX16.

Im an external HD kid of guy so that doesn't bother me to much

i mean these products are within 100 of each other at BEST BUY and I assume they aren't the exact same computers.

So what exactly are the trade-offs in specs because in my eyes the only difference seems to be build

I really don't know what HP is trying to achieve with these seemingly identical lines. Can you help me out further?
