    Hi,

I have a new DV7 (720QM), the fan keeps turning on and off while im just doing some normal windows stuff, and its really annoying. I would rather the fan keep a constant medium volume.

It appears that when the processor heats up a bit, the fan turns on, lowers the temp, then the fan turns off again....

Is there a way to set this? There must be some hysteresis setting somewhere.

Ive looked in the BIOS and cant find anything, there is something about the fan being on all the time, but that doesnt help.

Ive checked the power plan, cant find anything. However, if i turn the "active" power management thing in advanced from active to passive cooling, i.e. the computer lowers the CPU clock before turning the fan on it makes the fan less loud when on, but that seems quite an inelegant solution.

Speedfan does not see the fan.

Something like setting a minimum fan speed would work, or being able to set the temperatures at which the fans turn on and off.

    Help!!! :(

    Hi,
I have just bought an HP DV7 4180ea and have this exact same problem. I can't find a solution anywhere! As above, I tried changing the 'always on' option in the BIOS but no change, and i tried updating any relevant drivers but still the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas? It's seriously annoying.

My DV7 was just over a year old and the fan got extremely noisy. Mine is on all the time also, cannot adjust the speed or turn it off in bios or with Speedfan either. Sometimes it makes a serious grinding noise and i have to restart the computer. There are replacement guides on line but you have to take the whole darn thing apart and it seems like half the posters end up breaking something.

This is a desktop replacement that rarely moves around. My son is going to college soon and you can bet HP is not on our list of options. They probably keep the fan on due to many reports of overheating, though mine runs 48c most times, up to 62c once in a while.
