    HP DV7-6113CL

Bought and upgraded from Windows 7 Home premium to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Keep getting a unknown device error in device manager:
    SM Bus Controller

Thanks. First ran Windows Update to re-install drivers for Windows 7 Ultimate and continued to have error for SM Bus Controller in device manager I have installed all the drivers on the HP webiste for my model of laptop but its to no avail. Then tried to install AMD Radeon HD drivers to no still avail. Don't know what to do.

    Thanks

    Just a few thoughts:

I think typically SM Bus Controller is installed with the chipset drivers. If you installed the chipset drivers check the function of the power on/off button as the SM Bus is often related to the power button. If the power button is functioning properly, then just try deleting the unknown device …re-BOOT… and see if the error returns.

If the error returns, re-check to confirm you have installed "all" the required drivers. Drivers typically overlooked when doing fresh OS installs are HP Drive Guard (also called HP Mobil Data Protection), ENE CIR Reciever (if applicable), YouCam software (which also frequently installs a Web Cam driver), Cool Sense (if applicable), and specialized Quick launch buttons.

Look for a device not working correctly. Card reader, NIC, Wifi, Microphone, USB 2.0 and 3.0 etc….

Google "show windows hidden devices" and follow the MS command prompt instructions. Look for and uninstall all ghost drivers except those in the non-plug & play folder (these can be very tricky to deal with). Ghost are those that appear grayed out. When complete..re-BOOT.

    Best, Dave

Look under my post "AMD Drivers" I have links to the AMD Chipset Drivers Latest version. Look under Hardware ID for this device and google it and it will match HW ID to actual device that needs a driver.
