My search for a desktop replacement continues; I've ruled out the Acer I was looking at because it has no media card slot (may seem petty, but I do a lot with my digital camera. Don't want to have to drag around a cable or cardreader). I'm looking for P-M or Turion, and seemingly have searched the world.

Called HP this morning to ask about WHEN the upcoming DV8000 with the 17 screen and Turion was actually coming out, and how much it was likely to be. The best answer I could get was 'early November sometime, delivery guaranteed in time for Christmas' (but will my desktop hold up that long???) and 'under $1500, maybe well under depending on configuration.'

I'm hoping it's delayed because they plan to take advantage of the AMD price cuts.

But...my question to self, and anyone else who cares to answer, would be Is it likely to be worth the wait? And would it be better to wait until, say, January, if my desktop doesn't die of consumption by then?

If it's a good fit for you and there's nothing else availble that works in your budget, just wait it out. You'll regret whatever you buy today as soon as it's released.

Really hard to help without having some more information. The Dell 9300 with a coupon is worth a look. If you want to spend some more money, the Fujitsu n6000 or Asus Z83 would be on my list and will offer better quality than HP or Dell.

Exactly right, thats how the computer industry is, especially with notebooks. What I like about the DV8000 is that it can have two hard drives with up to 240 gigs of space so far. All notebooks of this size should have two hard drives in my opinion.

I think you should wait as well.

As someone who also does a LOT of digital photography with HUGE files, this machine with built-in card reader and dual hard drives is going to be ideal. You'll actually be able to have a second scratch drive to use with Photoshop on the road WITHOUT needing to bring an external drive or putting up with slow write times.

As I've posted elsewhere, 17" notebook DTR's are pretty easy to find, but NOT with a full keyboard with numeric keypad. And this machine, with the Turion should have far better battery life than almost any othe 17" DTR: 3.5 hours.

    Wait...

Seriously consider the Fujitsu N6200 - it can have two hard drives and has a media reader. I've seen configurations around $1500 and up.
