I have a dv9308nr that came with a TL-52 1.6GHz Processor and am trying to upgrade it to something faster. I used to build desktop computers, so I know it's possible to upgrade as long as the architectures and the sockets match. The TL-52 and TL-64 are almost identical, except the TL-52 is 90nm and runs at 31W and the TL-64 is 64nm and runs at 35W.

The problem I'm worried about is heat. In a desktop, all I would have to do is slap a more powerful heatsink and fan on and be done. However, since it's a laptop and the fan/heatsink are small and designed to fit the case, I can't really do that.

My Question is will there be any noticeable difference in heat between a 31W chip and a 35W chip? My TL-52 runs at 60 degrees max.

Yeah, but the BIOS might not support the newer revision(rev G) of the TL-64. As far as the heatsink/fan is concerned since HP used both 31W and 35W parts on the dv9000 series, the cooling system should be able to deal with the extra heat.

I did some searching, I think there are a couple of cases where users with dv6000s were able to upgrade from the TL-5X to a TL-6X using HP's latest BIOS (Whatever it was back then). My only concern was the heat.

Is the Revision G of the TL-64 something different than the other TL-64s?

The heat is not a big deal for the dv9000. They can come with cpu's with 35w TDP, so it should be able to accomodate the TL-64. Expect higher max temps though.

Make sure you use AS5 to help with the heat dispersal. If it still ends up too hot, then you can undervolt. That should cool off 10-15c easily.

Hmm..you're right the latest BIOS should support the 65nm Turions since if i can remember correctly they started offering it right before the switch to the dv95xx models. But I dont know if there were any newer steppings than the original release.

AMD also built a 90nm(rev F) TL-64's which had the same TDP as the 65nm versions, the 90nm one should definitely be compatible.

G2, Higher the stepping the more improvements it will have.

Yes that will work, though you might wanna look for a better one with DOA or 3 months warranty.

Yeah, plus the picture of the processor sitting on the carpet doesn't make it too appealing either...
