I have encountered a very frustrating issue with my HP DV9500.
The initial problem I encountered was quite awhile ago while playing a game and the graphics froze up forcing me to do a hard reboot. At the time I had upgraded the drivers (unfortunately this was many months ago and I do not remember what drivers I had upgraded to) so I rolled them back to the drivers I had before them. After rolling back the drivers I began to get the dreaded Black Screen of Death right after the Vista scrolling bar.
I ended up doing a reformat and reinstall. Everything loads up great, I get the generic vga drivers initially however whenever I download and install any of the Nvidia drivers I get the black screen on login as soon as a I reboot or, if I am lucky, after a few reboots. But the end result is always a black screen.
I have tried several drivers to date... the most up to date ones, older ones from latptopvideo2go, the official HP drivers, and the drivers that are suggested via Windows update.
The laptop works fine without any drivers at all except for the fact that without the actual Nvidia drivers I can't hook it up to my 32" LCD TV which is how we were hoping to watch Netflix and Hulu.
I'm pretty sure at this point I have been beating a really dead horse since my logical side keep telling me that the Nvidia chip is hosed, but I figured I would seek out some outside advice before I throw in the towel.

Here we go again, another failed nvidia chip. You can try cooking it yourself and it should work again. Need any details see here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=440765
