My HP Diagnostics test yielded this lone error:

    Error:
Hard Drive 1: Extended Offline SelfTest:test failed, error code: 017037001
    Failure: Drive Protection System failure
    Time of Error: 9:02AM 8/13/2008
    Diagnostics for Windows 4.11 A
    Recommended Action:
    Replace drive.
    Error Details:
Drive Protection System Status Bits = 0x0007

I just ran the test for the heck of it, I have no problems with my machine. Anyone know what it means exactly? I couldn't find much information on it.

    Thanks!

erixa89, please start your own thread if you have a completely different question from the original post, instead of hijacking someone else's thread. That's just rude and selfish.

    Anyway....
As for the "Drive Protection System Failure", I'm guessing that if the drive has accelerometers to detect drops and falls (keyword: if), that either the accelerometers and/or the associated circuitry for the accelerometers (which would interpret the data from the accelerometers and instruct the HD to park/shut down) failed.

That said, I'm not sure if the nw8000 used accelerometers to detect falls like the later nw8440. I'll have to ask the local help desk at my school and see what they say (last year's graduating class all had nw8000s). Worst case scenero is, you HD is ready to fail. Either way, you should go ahead and back up your data, just in case.
