Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what the major differences will be between the two processors?
Is the Intel better in regards to battery life only, or is going to be faster with the DDR3 memory, as the NEO only uses DDR2.
Battery life is not a major issue for me, and the extra $100 could be used specing up else where...
Any thoughts..?

If battery life isn't a major issue, I would go for the AMD+ATI combo. This combo lets you use a dedicated GPU while plugged in and the integrated one when on battery.
Just wait for reviews before you decide. According to one of the posts here, HP's official site says that consumers will be able to start ordering the DM3 on th 18th.
Hopefully HP sends out a review unit to a few websites soon. -
well as far as I know the AMD offerings are going to be quite similar to the dv2 thats out now (Turion Neo x2, Athlon Neo x2 ect) I am not sure how they are going to compare to the single core Intels, or some of the slower Intel CULV CPUs (1.3-1.6ghz ect). Also the Athlon Neo MV-40 single core may be making a reappearance, unknown. What I can tell you is the top of the line Intel CPU IIRC a C2D [email protected] is probably going to be faster than anything on the AMD side of things for the dm3. I am not exactly sure what kind of graphics the AMD units are going to have but apparently they are going to have hybrid crossfire/switchable graphics between two separate discrete and integrated GPUs. On the Intel side, expect 4500MHD graphics for the low end and G105M graphics for the high end (G105M is not great but on the dm3 its going to have GDDR3 memory which is a plus)

AMD will probably come with a better GPU option

Intel has just been fined 2 billion euros for anticompetive practices in the UK. Intel is the better processor but if they put AMD out of business then they will behave like all monopolies do and deliver bad quality at high prices.

Thanks everyone.
As you say, Sendmarksmail, best to wait for reviews.
Time is getting a bit tight. I need to have it my hands by 18th Nov.
Whats the build/del time? +/- 10days..? -
thats usually how it works but the delays COULD be longer if the model is in high demand. The only good news there though is you always COULD go with a prebuilt besbuy type if it fulfills your needs. It would be off the shelf so no delays there other than shipping.

I ordered the DM3z with Turion Neo X2 and HD3200 IGP w/ 64MB dedicated RAM. 4GB RAM, WLAN N and bluetooth, 320GB 7200RPM HDD.
I wanted more graphics power than the 4500MHD, but I dont need the ATI discrete, when the HD3200 is as good as it is.
Also, got the blue-ray player, and 25% cashback on the whole order through Bing.
That setup is less than the Intel variant, and should knock the socks off of it in value and power. Obvioulsy losing in battery life. -
Here is a review of the dm3 with AMD processor, in case anyone is still looking for it:
http://www.studentbuyingguide.com/2009/10/hp-dm3z-review/
The review is for one of the "quick ship" versions on the HP page. It came with 4GB Ram (SSR2), and ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. The review provides comparison to the acer 1410 (with su3500 intel), inspiron 13 (pentium dual core), and dell studio 14z (with intel core 2 duo). Also includes some user comments on battery life and heat issues. -
I'll be getting my laptop tomorrow. Specs in my sig.

I think Office Depot had the dm3z this week at around 499 after rebates!!!
-
Does it have switchable graphics with the ATI 4330? would make sense, but HP screwed that pooch with the DV5z before.
-
The one advertised at Office Depot (for $499.99) has 320GB hard drive, wireless N, and ATI Radeon HD 3200 GPU.
-
whats the difference between the turion and athlon neo?
-
The turion has 512kb of L2 cache per core, compared to 256kb each on the athlon. And the Turion has additional power state(s). To me, the 780G chipset was designed to work with a Turion or Phenom featured CPU. Also, with the switchable graphics people with the HD4330 discrete graphics have found they dont lose any battery life, even when using the discrete in some situations. People are getting 5+ hours out of them.
