I have a HP DV5129 US that I used for 4 months. It started not to turn on 8 times out of 10. The lights go on but unit becomes silent and does not boot up.

HP wanted $389 to fix it with a 90 day warranty. Not a great deal. anyone know what the problem could be? Could I fix it myself? Took it to a computer store and it worked everytime. My luck.

I bought another laptop, but would like to use this for my wife.

    any Ideas?

It sounds like the motherboard is starting to go out. The notebook should have a 1 year warranty at least, it shouldn't cost you more than shipping charges to fix. If you bought the notebook brand new 4 months ago, there is no reason to have to pay to fix it.

No. Iit is out of warranty. This happened after it was out of warranty. It has been in my closet for 8 months.
