I was recently given one of these notebooks. unfortunately it's overheating.

It reaches about 90c before it shuts off. Using a cooler bring it down to about 65c so I can use it at least. I noticed the fan isn't spinning at all...which is almost certainly the cause for the overheating.

I'm wondering if theres anything that could cause the fan to stay off, aside from hardware failure. Like a BIOS setting, program, etc. I'm not sure if it's under warranty, but I'm going to assume not.

I'm trying to reinstall win7 to see if that helps, but it keeps crashing during the install =(

I would try calling HP and seeing if you can get it fixed under warranty. Maybe there was a recall for it. I would get a can of compressed air to clean out all the dust in the vents. Even if the fan isn't running anymore, it would be better to at least get some sort of circulation throughout the laptop.

I'm going to take it apart and see if the fan got unplugged. I can't find a disassembly guide though, even on HP's site.

    Can anyone help me out?

Called HP. They asked me to update the bios and reset it to defaults...

    FIXED IT!

My fan started working immediately after a BIOS reset. I should have done that from the start, I was even considering it being a BIOS issue. Oh well!
