Hey,
I am trying to upgrade my RAM on my new Dv5t (loving it so far) and I was wondering which ram would give me the most bang for my buck - I am completely new to this and I only have the 32bit version (-__-) so I am basically looking for one 2GB stick so I can have 3GB of RAM. Any suggestions?? Gracias!

It is not required that identical modules be used, but this is often recommended for best compatibility for dual channel operation. It is possible to use a single-sided module of 512 MB[1] and a double-sided module of 512 MB in dual-channel configuration, but how fast and stable it is depends on the memory controller.
Modules rated at different speeds can be run in dual-channel mode, although the motherboard will then run all memory modules at the speed of the slowest module. Some motherboards, however, have compatibility issues with certain brands or models of memory when attempting to use them in dual-channel mode. For this reason, it is generally advised to use identical pairs of memory modules, which is why most memory manufacturers now sell "kits" of matched-pair DIMMs. Several motherboard manufacturers only support configurations where a "matched pair" of modules are used. A matching pair needs to match in:
* Capacity (e.g. 1024 MB). Certain Intel chipsets support different capacity chips in what they call Flex Mode: the capacity that can be matched is run in dual-channel, while the remainder runs in single-channel.
* Speed (e.g. PC5300). If speed is not the same, the lower speed of the two modules will be used. Likewise, the higher latency of the two modules will be used.
* Number of chips and sides (e.g. 2 sides with 4 chips on each side).
Dual-channel architecture is a technology embraced by motherboard manufacture -
For the DV5t or the DV5z
?
AMDs need identical modules (same size) for dual channel....(No AMD Flex Memory)
Anyway, you can install 3GB DDR2-800, but modules won't operate in DC. (Doesn't make much of a difference though)
I remember reading somewhere that the DV5z supports upto 8gig. -
Seems stupid they they would sell the 3GB as part of their built yourself option.
I was of this belief as well, because of what I read in a booklet I got with a motherboard once. Went along the lines of, that ram should not only be identical but be from the same vendor to achieve D/C . Then I came across this from article in Wikipedia, I was of the belief technology had got around that issue. My bad
