I was watching a DVD and then the power when out for 1/2 second and came back on, at the same time the laptop shut off. The computer was plugged in the entire time. Now the computer will not turn on no matter how long I hold the power button down. What should I do? Thanks

Was the battery inserted when the power went out?

Unplug the AC power and try running it off the battery.

If that doesnt work then then something might have fried in the system board during the outage.

It will not run either way.

I tried holding the power and the FN button but it didn't work. Thanks again for your help.

if your laptop is still under HP 1 yr standard warranty, then they should be able to fix it for free, dell did it with my vostro 1400.

well, ive never had a HP laptop before, just Dell, but if you want to, you can. theres not gonna be much to look @ tho... heres a pic of what should be your laptop DV9000 is on the right of the picture.

    h ttp://myfileuploader.com/dv7treview/images/dv7t034.JPG

unscrew the upper right hand cover, bottom right hand cover , and the middle cover, and see what inside. i doubt you'll see anything except where the heat sink is, thats where the power comes thru ( i think its under the upper right hand cover ) dont do anything experimental though. its best to setup a repair. or take it to GeekSquad @ circuit city

Your notebook has a NVIDIA GPU, therefore it has the same defective chip problem as the notebooks that are on the list. Call HP anyhow, maybe you'll get lucky.

If it's the GPU that's fried, HP will replace the MB, the cost I have seen posted most often is in the $350-400 range; they will replace with the exact same MB (meaning, if it is a manufacturing defect from Nvidia, you may ultimately have the same problem). New laptop can be had in the $800-1000 range; if you go in that direction, I recommend purchasing an extended warranty.

The biggest problem with laptops in the last few years seem to be the GPUs crapping out and taking the MB down; unless you plan on using the laptop for gaming, you may want to consider the integrated graphics option (no GPU to heat up and die).

I took it by a computer shop today and the guy felt pretty sure the MB was bad. He said to call HP. I paid about 700 for it, the thing shouldn't go bad in that amount of time.
