Greeting. I just received this laptop. I would like to create this topic for the laptop where people can share their opinion and advices. The first thing what I wanna say is I really like this new version of ENVY family with powerful combination i7 8550U + MX150 (dedicated graphics).
Very portable. On each side we have 2 USB (4 total). 1 on each side is USB Type C.
I need this machine for work where I'm doing a lot of video and photo editing (Vegas and PS).
MicroSD (MicroSDXC) slot very important for some users especially photographers
The 4K screen (From LG) is just amazing for the physical size of this machine, looks very sharp if I drop resolution down to 1080p. Most important for me - this 4K Screen from LG don't use PWM Flickering type for brightness. No PWM Flickering at all on all brightness level.
SSD slot support NVMe type and SATAIII type. For testing I tried 256 SATA from Samsung.
Gaming. About MX150. Very rarely, just a few games well enough mostly for winter cozy nights. For example, PlayStation emulator (nostalgy) and logical games. Not sure if should try something like GTA5. Just to see fps. Maybe later
BIOS support UEFI and Legacy mode
I will try install Windows 7 x64 later on this machine and will post results. For now I would like to just apply some tweaks for W10 (telemetry services), check stability and temperatures. Also I going to buy matte screen protector, carbon transparent skin and keyboard protector.
Regards, dmivos

I'm pleased that it's very quiet, I'm yet to hear any significant fan noise. I have only carried out low demanding tasks such as writing/browsing on the Envy thus far. I'll update this review if I test out how it performs when challenged with running games etc.
Overall, I'm hugely impressed - would certainly recommend. Great laptop with powerful components -
Thanks for the writeup. The Envy 13 8550u/MX150 combination really seems attractive in its form factor.
Have you noticed any throttling when loading both the CPU and GPU? -
Hi!
No throttling on Cinebench R15 or other tests or light games, I don't have any heavy games at this moment
I noticed that on W7 with 8550U there is one problem, I think because of Intel Graphics Driver...
"APPCRASH igdumd32.dll"
problem in "igdlh64.inf" (Intel HD Graphics 15.46, 15.47 or 15.60)
maybe someone know how to fix and add Windows 7 support section (to file "igdlh64.inf")
Intel removed Windows 7 special section in this *.inf file
Maybe there is the way to move it back for support (Windows 7 on 8550U and HD 620)

Just got this Laptop yesterday. Costco had a sudden price cut on it to 999 (400 off from 1399). Looks like a fantastic sale. It's sold out online as of now, but there were several in local stores where I picked one up.
My problem is that I'm trying to decide on keeping either this one or an i5 Surface Pro I got from Costco over the New Year (1149 for i5+Cover+Pen). Can keep only one so was looking for Pros and Cons.
I ran several metrics on this laptop last night, I expected that given a dedicated (albeit weak) graphics card and a better CPU & RAM that scores would be much better. This does not appear to be the case: Here are some of my computers (The Alienware 13 is the 2017 version, the 14 is the M14X R2 from 2014).
How can the Envy have worse metrics than the Surface Pro despite a i7 processor? (8550U vs 7300U) and a dedicated graphics card? Am I missing anything here? Are there any other standard metrics that I can run to compare these two in performance? -
Hi,
I ordered same from Costco. It's arriving on Saturday.
Can you please tell what SSD brand did yours come with?
Here is a good review on the laptop. Keep in mind they have tested the 8GB/256GB/Intel 620 version.

I expect better performance with the Costco version.Last edited: Jan 31, 2018 -
512GB Intel NWMe PCIe M.2 SSD
I would like to compare your results with my ENVY 13t 8550U + MX150. Could you please run benchmark Cinebench R15 (and post here a Screenshot)
OpenGL
CPU MultiCore
CPU SingleCore

Here's what I have for Cinebench R15.
I still can't understand why my Fire Strike scores are lower than the i5 surface. I updated the NVIDIA drivers and set to favor GPU card, but still same number. I wonder if the higher resolution is dragging down system performance.
Dmivos,
I see you have 77 fps in OpenGL. Are you doing anything special in your configuration? I'm wondering if I have a defective Graphics card, my score is less than half of yours...
Update.. did the same test with my Surface Pro i5, I get 37.41fps and 294cb. So there is definitely something fishy happening with the GPU if the MX150 is giving a lower score.Last edited: Jan 31, 2018 -
I really like 1080p on 4K screen, so I just lower down the screen resolution.
Also I install Windows 7 Pro to see how it works, then install fresh Windows 10 Pro after. On Windows 7 Pro this laptop works better, but some of software didn't work like touchscreen, Skype, MPC etc) Also I prefer Windows 7 because there is no telemetry and hidden updates, everything under user control, fonts and text in any software looks more sharper.
Here is more results from Cinebench R15. HP Envy 13t Windows 7 vs Windows 10 comparison

Well it looks like I will be returning this machine. It looks great but something is off with the GPU. I tried resetting it and running benchmarks again after installing 3D Mark, and still end up at 750 in Fire Strike.
If you see 3D Mark it's pretty common to get around 3k in Firestrike with this GPU, the only cases where it's less than 2k appear to be HP machines. Something HP has done has throttled this GPU badly. I tried changing performance settings and the resolution but no dice.
I get that this is not a gaming machine, but there's something wrong with a picture where a dedicated Graphics card gives worse performance than an integrated GPU. I'll stick with the surface, it cost 150 more but it has other uses as a tablet..zerosource likes this. -
My laptop just arrived. Tested out of the box with Cinebench 15.
First time I got:
OpenGL: 56.57 fps
CPU: 527 cb
Fan was running continues as that time and I opened Task Manager to see who's using the CPU. It was McAfee.
I waited few minutes and retested. Second time it scored:
OpenGL: 70.30 fps
CPU: 556 cb
I don't know how to upload the screenshots but anyways those are the numbers. I plan to uninstall McAfee and test again after.
Playing with it for 30 minutes seams pretty quick. Windows boots up in 10 seconds or less. -
-
My list of uninstalling things and tweaks. McAfee, Office then turned off all unnecessary services and some of them from schedule tasks. Then I used very helpful utility "SSD mini tweaker"
For screenshot you can choose "upload a file", should works -
they gone from Costco. they removed this laptop from listing. just wondering why
-
Hey Dmivos, hows the laptop going now? Do you think you could run Fire Strike and post the results? I'm thinking of buying this laptop and I'm hoping that Chanukya's issues were isolated.
-
Would really love to see some Firestrike scores to see if anything is up with the MX150 in this laptop as a previous owner suggested.

I considered it, but there are better value options out there. its still a very sweet machine.
actually strangely looking at the previous model today, they have had mx150 for 2 years. but the goose chose 4GB of Ram, im so over this soldered on state of RAM, either make them slightly bigger or figure out a better way for ram.
And of course you pay 4 times its worth to have the OEM install it.
But at this point in time Id not buy any soldered on ram under 16GB.
On my msi gs40, I watch it in dragon center, and it will creep to about 6GB of compressed RAM just as a running state, throw in some apps and games and you are hitting 10-12GB. give it 2 years and I think 16GB will be the 8GB of today.hmscott likes this. -
64GB is where it's at today, 128GB soon enough.
A TB in RAM is what I am waiting for, then everything can run out of RAM... or Optane 3D NAND.
Maybe SSD's will go the way of the HDD, simultaneously, with both out soon... -
Hi all,
I purchased this model from one of my local Costcos about two weeks ago. While no longer online, they had "about 30" in stock. I am loving this thing. It is small, quiet, and the screen is beautiful. This is my first laptop in over a decade. I was originally looking at the XPS 13, but really wanted something with a little more graphics power in a small footprint for my inner gaming self, and the offerings for Ryzen/Vega ultrabooks at the moment are insanely limited.
So far I've uninstalled a few things and updated to Windows 10 Pro. Also did the BIOS update and latest drivers from HP site, NVIDIA drivers update etc.
I'll mainly be using this for software development, and some light gaming (Steam games, Emulation etc)
I would like to purchase an adapter for hooking up to my TV. Some of the official HP support forums on this model mention needing an adapter that supports "DP Alt Mode". So far on Amazon all I see is a pure HDMI adapter of this type. Does something exist that adds an HDMI port as well as an additional USB-C/USB port?hmscott likes this. -
amazon >> Bqeel BC-C01D
on some reviews they recommend it -
Maybe someone can tell why touchscreen doesn't work with Windows 7, how we can fix it, need some drivers etc
-
For example Microsoft has Windows 7 Touch Screen drivers for the Surface devices:
Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7 - Surface Pro
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17368
You can also open a ticket with HP, online or call, but be patient you may get push back to load Windows 10.
Here's an example (I didn't find one for your model) from HP support forums for the Envy 17:
Drivers for Touch Screen for Envy 17 Windows 7 x64
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteb...Screen-for-Envy-17-Windows-7-x64/td-p/6474729
You could open a thread there for your model and ask the same question there, hopefully an HP support person or another forum user will answer.
Please come back and let us know what you find.dmivos likes this. -
At the moment I don't recommend buying this laptop, problem with Nvidia chip or board failure, I have one and send it to hp.

Users on hp forum are having same problem

Heavily considering buying one of these. Questions for y'all:
- I'm not a heavy user, I work from my browsers mostly. Lots Skype and video watching though. No video editing or anything. Is 8GB enough? 16GB is not available here in the Netherlands it seems.
- How is the fan noise?
- How is the screen brightness?
-
1. This laptop uses a slower version of the MX150. It's not a full spec MX150 but a lowered clock and lower TDP GPU
2. Maybe someone know what is this?
When the screen is on it is covered in many clearly visible dots.
It is very distracting (especially on white background).Last edited: May 19, 2018 -
just wondering if someone has already tried the new 2018 version
Main Q:
1. 4K version. Controlling LED brightness using PWM (YES/NO?) (0-100%)
2. Fan Noise
3. Thermal throttling
4. Dots on the screen
5. SSD and RAM Upgrade (YES/NO?)
6. SSD M.2 (PCIe or SATA?)
7. MX150 is 1D10 or 1D12 version?
8. Charging via USB-C

Hi y'all.. After 15 years owing exclusively Thinkpads, last weekend I just jump wagon to a HP Envy 13t 2018 Model 3EN03AV_1. Honestly I didnt even know was the new model until I tried to find info/reviews for the specific model, I thought I was buying the old model 2017. It looks like it was just was launched a couple of weeks ago.
I haven't received it yet (ETA on shipping 6/7) but I'll get back once on my hands and report results on Cinebench, etc.
For all you looking some info (almost nothing online) I'll share some urls where I found some first impressions.
