    F.A.Q.: By poster - Htwingnut

CPU - that's the toughest because it all depends on what you want to do with your PC but here's my summary:

i3 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, no Turbo Boost. Ok for basic desktop tasks like web browsing, flash, MS Office, and some gaming.
i5 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, Turbo Boost. i5-430 and 450 are similiar CPUs but the 450 is newer and has slightly faster clock speed. Performance between the two in general is probably less than 10%. i5-520m offers some additional instructions for hardware virtualization and AES encryption which just aid in processing more quickly with a few other benefits
i7 - quad core, multithreaded, no integrated GPU, Turbo Boost - Quad core is powerful, capable of processing eight threads simultaneously, clock speeds generally slower than an i5, but have advantage of processing more threads. No integrated GPU means less battery life because it will be using the dedicated GPU all the time. Most likely 50% less battery life.

Screen - 1366 x 768 brightview or 1600x900 Radiance. The radiance is top of class.

    Note: Amazon is selling the HP ENVY 14-1010NR (WQ784UA#ABA) = 1366 x 768. Non-Radiance display.

Hard Drive / SSD - Hard Drives = cheap, effective storage while adding noise, vibration, and heat. SSD = expensive, fast storage, with no vibration or noise with minimal heat and power consumption. SSD speed is superior to HDDs in two respects; they write 3 to 5 times faster and have seek times that are hundreds of times faster then a HDD. Current gen SSD's have a long life, probably much longer than you'd ever keep your laptop unless you do constant large read/writes to it 24/7.

TYPE OF SSD USED IN THE ENVY 14:
    160GB = Intel X-25M G2 (Trim supported)
256GB = Samsung MMDOE56G5MXP-0VB (Trim supported on some. HP shipping also firmware that doesn't support Trim.

12.5mm Height HDDs will NOT fit in the Envy 14. Even though the service manual says they will. A poster reported that a Samsung 1TB 12.5MM HDD did NOT fit.

    See thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/514949-1tb-hd-install-envy-14-a.html

Memory = 4GB is sufficient for most. Two sticks is fine. You can get up to a negligible 5% performance benefit running dual channel, or two sticks of the same size and speed, as opposed to single stick. But a single stick gives the benefit of just popping in an additional RAM stick later. Otherwise, if you know you'll want 8GB later then maybe go with single 4GB.

Though, you are best to match RAM sticks as mix-match of RAM manufacturers can lead to problems
    .

So if you don't want to take that chance and you know you'll need more than 4GB, you may want to get it configured with 6GB or 8GB.

    RAM SPECS:
1066mhz (if you have i3 or i5 CPU] or 1333 mhz (i7 CPU)

A note about RAM usage: There are not many programs that will use up the sum of 4GB. Requiring more than 4GB is reserved for multitasking of powerful programs or for multitasking very many programs at once. Adobe suite products come to mind and well as some A/V production suite programs.

Battery - The slice battery is apparently the "6 cell" battery they offer for $200 at the moment. It basically form fits the entire bottom of the laptop and is thin and gives up to an extra 100% or perhaps more battery life. No need to swap batteries as it works "smartly" with the built in 8 cell battery (59whr, 12.6 oz). Do a search at images.google.com for "envy slice battery" to see what it looks like. The trade off is that the slice adds weight (1lbs 15oz) and depth (14" x 9" x .5").

Preliminary Battery Runtime Results: (without Slice battery installed) (As executed by Stefan HT) Suggested insertion: jfk33

    - WLAN = ON
    - Display brightness 60%
    - standby at 10%: disabled

    Result: 4:10 hours

See Battery Life Log thread for posters with runtimes of 4:40 and 7hours.

Wifi - Important note (submitted by poster e14) - On the German preconfigured model 1010eg, the wifi card is Broadcom and not Intel as HP has advertised. The US version is Intel as specified (Centrino advanced N 6200).

FAN- The unit is set by default to run the fans at all times and at low speed at idle and during normal tasks. It can be disabled in BIOS. Though some users report that disabling it results in fans coming on every few seconds at medium.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CPU THROTTLING ON BATTERY IN THE ENVY 14:
    - submitted by poster Aleckazee

The processor is able to run at full speed when on battery not like on the Envy 15 where it would be limited to 1.2GHz.

Proof: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6421176-post2308.html scroll down and you will see it.

NOTE ABOUT i7 Processors: They do not allow for switchable graphics. Only dedicated. Therefore a unit outfitted with an i7 processor will consume more power and shorten battery life.

NOTE ABOUT i3-370M Processor: (Contributed by Bronsky and Protiod) Unlike the i5 and i7, the i3's thermal maximum is 90 DegC (unlike 105 for i5/i7). Real world use would not see temps reach that high. But during CPU stressing, it can.

Potential CPU WHINE Fix: (If you experience this anomaly, try one or both of the following)

Warning: Do not touch MSCONFIG processor settings!

If you touch the #of processor settings in MSCONFIG/boot/advanced options you will get false # of Core/Thread readings in CPU-Z.
It will also lock your processor at one core and it will run at max speed.

Starting again since the other thread was too large. Something which might have scared off new posters.

Try to make new posters feel welcome so they use the lounge instead of starting new threads.

    0.95 Volts.

Try playing a game. Go back to GPU-z. Does it show 1V? When overclocking or playing games, AMD GPU Clock tool reports 1V for my i7 envy

    0.95 Volts.

also amd gpu clock tool won't work on my radeon 5650 (like most/all CTO1000s)

I'm guessing they made the cards a little bit better/got higher binned cards after some people returned/had envies which couldn't game at 450/800 due to being volted way too low.

Whatever. It happens. And my computer works well enough for me gpu wise.

I mean at least mine isn't one of those CTO1000s that crashes when gaming after a couple of hours (at least 2 people got one of those on this board).

well in the end I don't even bother to OC. It works well enough at 450/800 for my needs.

I mean if I could OC like a timeline 3820TG I would but only going up to 550/800 is like..3 or 4 fps which usually doesn't make or break games for me.

    man.

I cannot get the correct ICC profile to stay set for my envy 14.

I don't want the blue tint again.

Totally forgot how to make the ICC profile stay after a reboot.

edit: whatever I just used some program to do it (monitor calibration wizard, some old 2003 program that still works)

well if you updated the video card stuff you could have accidentally gotten rid of the hdmi audio drivers.

I know ATI stopped putting them in their packages. You have to hold them over from the HP packages/and earlier ATI package (usually just the HP packages. I know the 10.6/10.7 package has 'em 8.742.1 or something)

Does anyone know if Hp is shipping out ssd's with trim support now. I've read that it's been hit or miss for some shipments a few months ago but I haven't read about anything changing regarding that. I'm asking because I'm exchanging my i720qm/radiance for an i580m/256 ssd and I wanna make sure it's going to be worth it.

I'm pretty sure it was the older samsung 256g drives that didn't support TRIM as someone said back then HP may have had a lot of them to get rid of before they got the newer trim supporting drives. Of course thats just based on what i've read here and no supporting evidence but i was curious about the same thing when i got a 160g intel from hp.

Also, I know a member here who just got a brand new 256g from hp and his supports trim. I'm sure he'll chime in on this.

Hello again! I just bought my HP envy 14 and so far it has been great. I went to best buy and found an open box envy 14 which according to geek squad have been reset to factory specs. I am having 2 issues that I am concerned about and was wondering if this is a problem for any of you guys.

    1. The fan is a bit louder than my previous del laptop. I can tolerate it but not sure if the loudness is within "normal" range of sound. All I can say is that my old dell would get this loud only after leaving it on my bed for a few hours.

    2. This is what bugs me the most and will determine whether I need to return this thing or not. I place my left index finger or thumb on the left click pad and use my right index finger to move the mouse cursor. At this point, I am in contact with two different parts of the mouse sensor pad. When I open a new page or program the cursor part is no where near as sensitive as it should be. I could move in a clockwise motion with my finger and the cursor would skip around in random directions. This is not an issue if I take my left finger off the click portion of the mouse pad. I dont know about you guys but i like to keep one finger on the left button at all times but in doing so, I cant move the cursor around. Is it defective?

the touchpad/clickpad on the envy 14 is rather...well...finicky is putting it nicely.

there's some updates to drivers that can help (the latest one you can set a palmcheck area where it should register taps outside that area but you can't get a true deadzone really).

there's some third party software to make two finger scrolling work better too.

anyway the issue with two fingers on it is that the touchpad things you're finger is in two places at once and gets confused. It can register more than one finger but it doesn't move well if you just have a finger sitting there.

it's annoying but there's not much you can do, just how the touchpad is made.

huh...just tried out messing with the newer drivers and the advanced palmcheck is actually pretty good if you set it up right (too good possibly).

you can turn off touch and tapping in a certain area (and if you set the filter activation time to zero it's kinda just turned off outside the zone forever)

you have to update to the latest drivers and it's not perfect of course (it's inactive time so *shrugs* it'll still depend a bit on where your finger is but as long as you don't move it too far up it should just ignore the thumb on the button.

You need to download the latest windows update drivers and mess around in the touchpad settings.

I added two pictures to this post. If your drivers don't have these options you need to update your touchpad drivers. If the screen looks nothing like this then you've updated to the latest latest drivers (the ones that showed up oh, a week ago at most) and those don't have this function anymore, at least not explicitly.

edit: keep in mind that you need to set the filter activate time to 0 and no action in that area will make stuff happen UNTIL you start moving the mouse.

If you move your finger from above down into that area it'll act like it was before. So, if you move your thumb some it could still trigger stuff while using the touchpad. This stuff is mainly to stop accidentally moving the cursor around while typing (but it does work in making a pseudo-deadzone down at the buttons)

I think if you turn off two finger scroll you wont have that problem. Reil's app is better at handling stuff like multiple finger scroll but its not perfect. I just use 1 finger scroll and it works great if you leave your finger on the bottom buttons.

It's a gorgeous laptop, but it doesn't have nearly what I want in terms of specs. I love my envy, and its gonna take a hell of a lot to make me change my mind! (unless the refresh has a lot of nicer things going for it, I'll stick with what I've got for quite some time!)

With the alternate driver, as long as you are holding down the click, you can move two fingers separately. Also, instead of using one finger to click and one to point, you can just use one to point and click.

Not sure if you prefer that method (clickpad method) of navigating, though.

that's fine if you have to click something (and is generally how I've always used a touchpad, just use my index finger while my hand is kinda over it, push it down if I need to click..or just tap.).

otherwise I type and my thumbs kinda brush the top left and top right edges.

lot of other people on here just rest a thumb on the button or something though

    Hey guys quick question.

For whatever reason I can't play video with the lid closed. I set the option to "do nothing" but when I close the lid with video going, it stops for a second, and then only sound continues while the picture is still frozen. Any solutions? Thanks a lot!

edit: forgot to mention I'm hooked up to a 23" inch 1080p external monitor.

I really like the design on the regular Envy. I am constantly running my hand over the top because it feels kinda... cool. I also really like the color change that the lid has in different lighting. It looks almost black in a dark room, and kinda greyish silver in some, and a bronze when it's in the sunlight. I don't think the etching looks like flowers, it looks more just kinda swirly to me.
I have no idea, you might want to scan your computer or something. What version of Windows did you get with your laptop? I'm on Home Premium and it showed up in the automatic updates for me. Maybe there are some issues with your version of Windows, or maybe some kind of malware is screwing around with Windows Update.

I had some issues with my 24 monitor. I found that disabling the laptop monitor, and setting the standalone to primary worked well. Double check your settings for do nothing on lid close, while powered/unpowered.

And in general just keep at it, it is likely some small detail being overlooked.

it's not as hard as it COULD be.

but it is a little bit involved and you could accidentally tear the keyboard cables (plural) one for the keyboard itself, one for the backlight.

one of them (or both) are double-sided taped somewhere.

go check the maintenance guide (search for it on the first post) for instructions that are good (but not perfect since HP's maintenance guides tend to have one or two things missing, in this case the double sided tape)

sacrifice his first laptop to the computer gods in the sky.

also uh, is he in the US?

    866-408-5408

have your product ID and serial number stuff (fn+esc if he hasn't gotten rid of the quicklaunch stuff and/or run the hp support assistant if he has) ready.

otherwise that info is underneath the battery (I think)

Have lived with the HP Envy 14 for 6 months, I feel I would like to share my opinions:

As MAc for me was out of the question and I wanted a small but solid (and cool) laptop, I went for this one.

What a let down! Screen format, useless (my fault, but anyway..) Why so wide? (All reviews at that time were touting the Radiance screen, which was not available when I ordered...

Touchpad; worse than describe elsewhere. Extremely useless, now lugging a mouse with me.
Build quality, feels solid, but HD failure after 1 week, then was returned with a dent. Keyboard flex.
Battery, not great, slice hard to get and too expensive.
After some time with HP products, this was the last for me, either go cheaper (dell) or buy Lenovo.

So I feel better getting this off my chest!

I must admit, the Trackpad on the Evy machines is an acquired taste, but then again once you get used to using one finger you can complete Plants Vs Zombies. :)

You either get a lemon, or you don't. Shame that you did :(

I don't have an issue with the trackpad anymore. I used to not be able to keep one finger on the buttons and move my finger around but now after messing with the drivers and turning off two finger scroll I'm able to use the trackpad perfectly. I don't even use the reil app anymore. I have some pretty bad keyboard flex which annoys me but I'm giving back this laptop because they broke my radiance at repair and getting a new envy 14 with an i580/6gb/256gb ssd all for under $950. I personally wouldn't pay anywhere near HP's actual price for this laptop because its not yet ready to compete with other high end laptops at that price point. But for under $1000 I think its a pretty solid laptop.

lol I guess I never had many problems with the trackpad because I never have a finger resting on it. My experience with this computer has been excellent. I really hope this machine has been built to last, because I hope to be using it for a few years at least.
