price will be whatever the price is for the Envy 14 refresh. The default processor is the i5-2410 I think

yo, If I swap out the thermal paste with IC diamond, does that void my warranty with HP (This is applying to the 1st gen Envy 14)

According to several there's pretty much no difference.

    Maybe a 1-3 C drop at most.

Also, there's no way HP can really tell if you've taken it apart or not. There aren't any stickers, so replace the paste if you want

I think it will, the only things you can change/touch are the hard drive, battery and memory. Anything else will void warranty.

Besides, it won't bring you a big improvement. If your CPU sits at 30-35C on idle w/o GPU, you are in the average range.
If you're higher, there may be an issue with the fans or how the heatsinks are seated.

I am in Cali and summer is getting close, indoor it ranges from 15C to ~30-32C. At home It doesnt get much hotter than 30C as AC will kick in at 29C (i know i am cheap xD).
And at work they keep it at ~20C.

Right now with ambient of ~19-20C

    New refresh:
HP ENVY 14 series | HP Official Store

i5 2410m and AMD 6630m are default. I think it only comes with a standard display.

I've been looking to upgrade my laptop (see signature). Is this the time? haha

depends on what you want to do with your laptop:
    - if you only browse the web, edit documents/pictures and watch videos , keep your laptop with great battery life , it'll do what you need for the years to come
    - if you want to game, go for the envy or even better the dv6 with 6770

If going with the i7 2630qm and the rest of the refresh envys, you still think its not worth it? Or is the i7 2630qm less hot, from reading a lot of about the envy the i7 740qm produced a lot of heat, I was thinking the IC would cool it better by up to 10c lower. Also I am circling this around playing games like Portal 2, or BFBC2

    Thanks

2.0 says the thermal goop used is shin-etsu MicroSi, which has been tested in places and has ranked pretty well.

You're probably going to get a few degrees lower, but getting 10C less is unlikely

    ShinEtsu MicroSi, Inc.

The two thermal pastes are pretty much the same as Diamond IC gets 4.5 Watts per meter kelvin and MicroSi's thermal conductivity can be anywhere from 3-4.5 Watts per meter celsius. Because people haven't seen much difference between Arctic Silver and the default goop, I'd lean closer towards the higher end of the range.

(btw, 1 kelvin is the same as 1C, but kelvin starts its scale off at absolute zero and Celsius starts off at the freezing temperature of water. The actual magnitude of difference between +1K and +1C is the same.)

So yeah, expect a few degrees' difference unless HP didn't apply the compound correctly. Hoping for a -10C difference in your temps would be a little bit of a stretch, though.

the 2630qm is worth it if you plan to do a lot of CPU heavy work (such as video/audio editing, compiliing, etc).

For games it won't help too much as the 6630 bottlenecks even the i5...

nice, it'll help if you do a lot of conversion and processing. It's worth the $100 upgrade in this case.

I recently upgraded my 1st gen Envy 14 w/ an SSD and reinstalled all the drivers on the HP website. However, now when the computer is asleep/off theres no power going to the USB ports so I cant charge devices or wake from sleep using the mouse. Theres no options for power management in bios F23. Any suggestions?

Sleep is supposed to keep power when plugged in...

Try going to device manager and fiddling with the settings for the USB controllers/hubs

When my envy is off with AC power plugged in, it powers the USB ports.

If AC is off, it won't.

    Hello!

I am really sorry for asking this because it might have been answered so many times, but I just don't have the patience to read so many threads. I have a question about my laptop(Hp envy 14 standard edition). It seems like FULLHD videos (the file I have is a MKV 16Gb Avatar-I also Own the Blue-ray movie) don't play that well on it. I mean they play but they get cranky alot (using VLC). Is there something wrong with my drivers? Should I install some advanced drivers? It's really annoying because I bought this laptop just days ago and I would expect videos to run smooth.

I heard there is some advanced drivers and firmware I could install but frankly I get lost over the internet.

    And sorry about my english.

    Thank you,

    ~Rain

Hi. I'm attempting a calibration of the screen using the basic calibrator of Windows 7. The resulting ICC is not bad, but I wonder if anyone has a proper profile for the last gen Radiance screen (the redish one). Thanks!

could just be a bad download.

could be VLC player choking on the file even though VLC has improved some.

I'd try seeing how it plays after installing the CCCP codec pack (and running it from media player classic)

the issue is that VLC is good but it's ya know..it's not "specific codec pack that works properly for everything" good.

it's more of a "I will play anything but you may need enough horsepower to make this work" good.

It just depends on the file sometimes

    I think I got a serious problem.

When I insert the A/C adapter into the port, the light next to it goes yellow (meaning charging the battery) but when I take it out it stays on white. I thought it stays white when battery is fully charged! That white light doesn't go out until I take out the battery (which is why battery bar never shows discharging..it only goes "charging" when connected with adapter and "charged" while not connected)

Does it seem like a software issue or hardware issue? Can it be fixed from BIOS or updating power management somehow?

    ok that's odd.

is this the new SB edition?

if so that's definitely a bug of some sorts tha hopefully an eventual bios update can fix.

So I think i have misplaced my 1st gen envy charger. Can someone help point out if it was a 65w or 90w charger? Also, any specific links to products that I could purchase that are guaranteed to work would be helpful.

I checked HP's website and it shows the slimline adapter which I don't want because it seems significantly shorter. I also saw a second slim adapter which I suppose is fine but it would be great if I could just get the standard factory adapter that they hand out with laptops which I can't seem to find on their website.

Link for slim adapter (Not short slimline): HP 90W Slim Power Adapter | HP® Official Store which seems to also work.

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the recovery disks are made from the recovery partition, which remains untouched and always revert the system to the factory defaults. So, I think is safe to make the recovery disks anytime, but be ready to expend 5 DVDs or so in the process.

I fear the worst. I was playing tf2 at my desk and my envy shut itself off. Normally, this wouldn't be the biggest issue, but I saw some smoke coming out of the back vent.

I unplugged the charger and tried to boot it, but it won't start. I'm freaking out here. Would this be covered under warranty? If so, is the likelihood that I get my beautiful screen back 0?

Sorry if this has been covered, searching on my phone is a bit difficult

Something burnt out. Probably wasn't one of the main chips, but another component that isn't thermally protected. You'll have to send it in for sure, but they probably won't change the display, only the mobo in my experience.

    Hey all,
I have an Envy 14 i5 I bought a couple of months ago. When I use it under "normal" conditions it works great. But lately (in the last week or so) everytime I play WoW- after 10min or so I lose wifi connectivity. I can disconnect/reconnect my wifi and it works again for a few minutes, then it happens again.

I am using wifi frequencies that no one around is using. I checked against viruses and mallware and the laptop is clean.

Anyone have any ideas about this?

Thank you! I do have the Advanced-N 6200 so I downloaded the driver file to my desktop. However when I click on the file it starts doing something, then about 10-15secs later it turns off (I ran the file as the administrator). And when I check the driver version it still has v13...., the old version. I also tried telling the computer to update the driver and pointed it to this file, but I get a message saying the computer checked and I have the latest driver. :(

Final question before I ship my laptop off to get fixed.

I've been forgetting to back up my data, and I don't want it to get erased. Since I can't turn the computer on, is there any way I can remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer to take all the files?

    Thanks
