ctrl+r in game gives you fps.
I'm on 12.4. Make sure you aren't getting hit by the powerplay is locking your clocks at 300/300 bug (turn powerplay off, hit apply, turn powerplay on).
and again I'm at 1280x720.
1366x768 may run a bit worse. 1600x900 I 100% can't do at these settings.
edit: also I had a wonderful 300+ ping 'cause "launch day"

alright thanks for the info.
but what is this powerplay thing you talking about?? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
for MY envy 14 (and several other envy 14 1xxx builds) powerplay can glitch when you unplug the computer or swap gpus.
Basically it gets stuck on power saving mode and your radeon 5650 is being throttled. To fix it you have to turn powerplay off and then turn it back on. I set some hotkeys up in the catalyst control center to handle this (ctrl+alt+z is powerplay on, ctrl+alt+x is powerplay off). -
so i can set the powerplay in catalyst right?
how do i know whether i got the glitch? -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?

I'm running D3 at highest settings and I'm 0% lag.
I've noticed that Windows Mode affects performance though.
Full screen for best results?
Check my specs. If you have same or better than mine, you should be able to run d3 at full settings -

I recently encountered this problem, like many other Envy 14 1xxx users; http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/562759-envy-14-hard-disk-failure.html and now need to replace the hard drive.
I was looking at the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB, and saw on the specs page, that the second-gen (the one worth the extra $) is .2mm taller, and .3mm wider, and .2 longer. I know that the E14-1xxx takes a 9.5mm drive, did HP really build these to only fit 9.5mm drives? Will the new generation Momentum XTs fit?

Omg! How u Guys install the ccc 12.4?
Do u uninstall ati ccc including the install manager first?
After I install the 12.4(gotten from the link in the first page my laptop can't boot up!) help...... It stuck at the windows logo screen, but I can hear the windows sound that it went inside already. Just that my screen is still at the windows logo page -

ironman has done a wonderful job walking every Envy-1xxx user through their display driver installations.
Just follow every step to the letter, and everything works out. -
Digging this out of the blue a bit but I ran into a problem recently. Like most years, at the beginning of summer after school's over I reformat my laptop, something I've done dozens of times across all my PCs. This time however, the installation bugged out, saying that the windows installation was corrupt and restarted. It stopped after the startup screen with an error, "cannot find bootmgr, press ctrl+alt+del to restart". I got a new windows dvd and restarted the installation, however this time, my computer just died in the middle of it and won't turn on any more. It had a full battery and was on AC power so that shouldn't have been a problem.
As of now, the laptop doesn't turn on at all, no startup screen nothing. I've tried removing the battery and AC power for 15 min, going to leave it overnight and see if anything fixes itself.
Any suggestions on what else to do?
I've opened up the laptop completely before so I have no problem taking it apart, removing parts or replacing a part or two if necessary if I can source the part if that's what's necessary.
Edit:: Read through the last few pages. The only thing I've done is updated the bios to F.26 which appeared to complete successfully. It did successfully restart after that happened which is why I find the problem weird. I am in computer engineering so I can get access to a lab which I can change the bios chip myself but I'd rather not have to go through that. Currently removing bios battery and seeing what happens. -
bootmgr is missing -
I'm sorry if this has already been addressed on here, but the search doesn't seem to be working for the forum and there are so many pages now!
I have: Envy 14, i7 Q740 - AMD Radeon 5600 1GB - 6GB DDR3 - Radiance Display (1600 x 900) - Win 7 HP 64 Bit. I bought the laptop as a refurb about 18 months ago and have had no problems at all until now.
About a week ago my laptop started crashing/freezing with blank screens of varying colours or with random strange characters. I think the graphics are overheating causing the machine to crash. It happens when I'm playing relatively old games, like Portal, which used to run with no problems at all. I find that the fan doesnt seem to run as loud and therefore as fast it used to for as long so I dont think it is cooling enough.
Does anyone know of any way I can set at what temperatures the fan comes on/runs at certain speeds? Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Any suggestions would be welcome! -
So I'm getting pretty frustrated and desperate. I reformatted my envy and installed all the drivers from swsetup, as well as some from the website. I then realized the ports were missing from device manager. I tried "show hidden devices," reinstalled the chipset drivers, and even reformatted a couple more times, including trying Windows 8 beta for a bit. I'm now back to 7 Home Premium.
The only thing that makes sense is that the Ports are turned off somehow? But I went through bios including the advanced one (pushing a and f10 at the same time) and can't find any sort of option to turn them on or off. What the f is going on and how do I fix it? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
which port? Ethernet can get stuck on "power saver mode" forever. Kind of a pain and you have to plug something into the port then go to sleep and wake the computer up. That or turn that low power mode off. OF course that option isn't IN the bios if your bios is pre Bios F.13
bluetooth and wifi have the hp connection manager which you can use to turn them back on (force them on) so drivers install. the fn+f10 key for wifi needs to be toggled on.
if you mean the hdmi, that only works with the radeon 5650 and audio comes from the initial hp drivers (well the hp drivers in general). then you go 11.2 and then 12.3/12.4/12.6 beta/12.7 beta/whatever the you want.
USB ports should just work. -
Hello all,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I've been having some processor issues lately. I noticed a decrease in performance when gaming and the Windows Experience Index tells me I have a subscore of 2.2 for my i5-450M processor. I'm not sure if the index just isn't displaying the correct score or if I actually have a problem with it. I ran virus/malware checks and nothing popped up, tried rebooting, unplugging and plugging the power source back in all to no avail.
This definitely wasn't a problem a couple months ago, though my laptop has recently had to shut itself off due to overheating.. not sure if that would affect it or not.
Anyone with advice or thoughts on what to do next?
Thanks! -
I hope this is not inappropriate but I replaced my Envy 14 with a 15 and am selling both the internal battery and the slice battery. They are both available on eBay. Just thought i would share.

Just looking for advice from longtime owners. My extended total care warranty/accident protection is coming close to an end and I'm trying to figure out if there is anything worth taking a close look at to get repaired. The one thing a friend of mine mentioned was the condition of the power plug port. It seems tight (it doesn't fall out on its own or anything). The only thing I noticed was it has some vertical give (think see-saw effect. If I push up/down at all on the top/bottom of the power cord when its plugged it it tips, like a see-saw.) Just curious if thats a wear and tear thing or if everyone's is like that. I'd love to keep this computer working for another 2 years and not have to spend 500+ dollars on repairs because mobo or whatever is connected directly to the power plug snaps, when otherwise hardware wise this envy has been well built as far as I can tell. Thanks for any help. Reading these forums has definitely solved a few software related problems for me.

Hey guys, I was looking to replace the fan with the exhaust on the right hand side of the computer because I think that it may have become unstable and makes loud noises sometimes. I was looking at this fan and was wondering if you guys know if it will fit the computer New HP ENVY 14 Series 14-1214tx 14-2002tx CPU FAN right side KSB05105HA | eBay . I have a Envy 14 1000-CTO. HP ENVY 14 14T Thermal Heatsink & Fan Module 608378-001 | eBay
The thermal unit/module as it is called might still be available from HP Parts as I found the number in HP Partsurfer (608378-001) but that is for the complete unit not just the individual fans--or you could just buy the complete unit and make sure.
I've never opened my Envy so don't have any firsthand information.
Might want to call up HP Parts and see if they have any info:

my windows 7 isn't keeping time. does this mean i already have to replace my CMOS battery? i think i remember reading that the envy uses a special proprietary battery that i can't purchase from any regular old department store. true?
*sigh* -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...e-always-wrong-time-replace-cmos-battery.html
According to 2.0 it is a special battery so you were correct on that point. -
does anyone have experience replacing the fans on the envy 14? I think the fan bearing on the right side gave out and is now loud as hell. Problem is when I try to remove the screw that attach the fans and heatsinks to the motherboard 2/3 I see won't budge, and I would break the screwhead before it'll budge. I have the HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO and my warranty is up.

Just checking in... my Envy 14 is still chugging along quite well since I bought it in August 2010. No issues whatsoever...

Hello all! Please help me with strange right fan noise!
Same...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/677138-bad-fan-noise-right-side-envy-beats-14-1gen.html -
seems like 2 years is the point when a lot of people's fans are giving out. I use my laptop very frequently though.
-
My fan is still working after 2 years of constant use... the only thing I noticed is the computer tends to get very hot on the right side by the exhaust vents. Might need to get some compressed air and shoot that crap out!
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Or you could just live with it like I did for several months. I didn't have any heating issues with it, just the noise, so if I hadn't fixed it I'm sure I'd still be in the clear. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
also my radiance screen is starting to do something...weird...sometimes. Like it will lose all contrast for like 10 to 15 seconds while on battery. Don't get why it happens but it doesn't happen every time I'm running the battery down. -
I know this was a known problem when the 14 first came out and a few people found the solution but..
my envy makes that high pitched noise. It was barely there when I first got it (almost two years ago now), but recently it is really bad. Very loud and noticeable, more of a screeching sound now and it's incredibly annoying. I have tried enabling/disabling bluetooth but that's all. Does anyone know what I could try to fix it? Apart from that the laptop is running very well, not a single other problem and I don't regret buying it -
In my case I solved this replacing the HD (was a Seagate Momentus, now its a WD Blue). I still can hear it, sometimes, and still seems related to the HD IMHO, but other people solved it tweaking the CPU.
-
Don't think it's my hdd, I had the intel 160gb ssd, after I switched it around with my desktop 60GB OCZ it still makes the noise.
What did they do to their cpu to tweak it? -
We taxed it so it wasn't idle. Most of us found out that the high pitched sound only sounded when the computer was idle. So someone wrote a simple script to make it say "Hoo-ah" over and over. Stopped the whine from sounding but it heated up the laptop. =T Win one lose one.
-
BTW, I decided that in my case was the HD because the sound changed when the HD was in use. Also, I downloaded a program to force a spin down, and in this case the sound disappeared.
-
Yeh I noticed it was only when it was idle. I think I'll put up with it, it's not the end of the world.
-
Hi, I haven't been around since I got my Envy 14 in summer 2010(last batch of radiance screens... BUT NOW MINE'S SCRATCHED
), and I was wondering about replacing the ODD with an SSD. Is there a guide to do this? What are the specs of SSD's I should be looking at? I think 2.5" but I'm not sure if Sata II or III... For example would this one be a good candidate? Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 4 VTX4-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
OCZ SSDs have a tendency to die.
Get a crucial m4 or samsung 830 or one of the newer intel SSDs.
Yes we only have SATA II, but the SATA 3 drives cost roughly the same (when they're on sale).
most/all SSDs are 2.5 inch form factor. There are a few slimmer ones and then there are mSATAs. Neither of those will work, so may wanna double check the size. -
-
-
The scenario you describe is exactly what I did and am perfectly happy with it. -
does anybody have the ICC profile for radiance screen? titled "X-rite_9-1-2010_2.icc"
recently performed a clean install and forgot to backup some files (SMH). seems like all the links are down. -
So it's been a while since I was last here, but I have decided to do an upgrade from my gen1 hp envy 14 beats edition:
HERE ARE MY CURRENT SPECS:
64 bit windows 7
640gb HD @ 7200rpm
8gb ram
i5 M580 processor [I missed the upgrade by two months... couldn't wait]
you all know the rest
So, this all began with me wanting a SSD as an upgrade, however 256gb just isn't enough and it seems that the larger SSD don't fit into the bay. Because I love this laptop soooo much, and nothing else on the market comes CLOSE! [i'm talking about style, performance, etc] I am now thinking of buying a new hp envy 14 beats edition with these specs:
HP ENVY 14 BEATS Notebook EXTREME 16GB RAM (Intel Core i7-2860QM second generation QUAD Processor - 2.50GHz with TURBO BOOST to 3.60GHz, 16 GB RAM, 80GB SSD + 1TB Hard Drive (1080 GB total), slot-loading DVD burner, BEATS AUDIO, 14.5-inch WIDESCREEN display, Windows 7)
My question is, I have never heard of this processor in a beats laptop (this is from amazon) so i'm not sure if it will burn my pants off, lol, and would like to know the tradeoffs, primarily in power and battery life. I had actually originally bought the gen 1 i7, however due to heating and battery issues I exchanged it for this version. I am about to start grad school as an architect and I also work with my dad doing marketing, advertising, primarily graphic design. So I use TONS [20+] of software, the most intense of which is CAD [revit, rhino, archicad, maxwell, autocad, sketchup, etc.] stuff. Price is not a huge issue, as I can figure something out, but the difference will cost me ~$400 i'm assuming [around the same cost of a 500+gb ssd]. don't worry about that tho, I just want to know what you all think I should do in regards to upgrades, should I sell and buy this? etc... I am open to suggestions and am planning on making a decision by the end of the week.
I appreciate everyone on here. I have always used this site for purchasing my computer hardware. was first a dell xps desktop in 04, then asus g1s in 07, then envy 14 beats in 11, so thanks for the support. Hope to hear from you all soon.
fyi/ its been a while since Ive been on the techie side of the world, but there was once a time when I lived in it [knew c++, java, every piece of hardware, have build over 20 computers in my heyday etc.... but now I need some advice as I've been out of the loop for quite some time... about 2-3 years]
THANKS -
Hi I've had a HP Envy 14 BE 1195eo for almost a year and a half now, and I'm just wondering is it is possible to upgrade the motherboard and processor to Sandy Bridge? Will the motherboard fit? Any connectors that have changed? Anything else that has changed so that it wont work? I'm also wondering where would be the best place to get the parts (they have to ship to Norway)? I can get an i5 2430m from Ebay, but i don't know where to get a motherboard. The reason i want to upgrade is the battery life, and single thread performance (I've got an i7 720QM now). Lower power usage (35W vs 45W) and switchable graphics should help a lot on the battery, right?
Would be really happy if someone could help me here -
Does anyone know what type of keyboard the Envy 14 is? I love the feel of typing on it and would like a desktop version keyboard of it.

I was deadset on a hp envy 15inch until i saw some reviews for the samsung series 7 15.6 now i cant decide!
-
Hi there. My Envy 14 has been overheating when playing older games (like HL Source and Portal) so I accessed the advanced settings on the BIOS to trigger when the fan comes on. I set the temperature lower than it was before so the fan would be on more to help with the cooling - but the changes seem to make no difference - I set it onto high speed as low as 45, but even when CPUID HW Monitor tells me my CPU is at 75, the fan is still on low speed? I have also replaced the thermal paste between the processor and GPU and their sinks, but little or no difference. Gave the machine a good clean as well so there is little/no dust.
Any suggestions on what I can do to get the fans running more, or to get the machine to cool generally would be much appreciated.
Specs are: Envy 14, i7 Q740 - AMD Radeon 5600 1GB - 6GB DDR3 - Radiance Display (1600 x 900) - Win 7 HP 64 Bit. I bought the laptop as a refurb about 18 months ago and have had no problems at all until now.
Thanks! -
