    F.A.Q.: By poster - Htwingnut

CPU - that's the toughest because it all depends on what you want to do with your PC but here's my summary:

i3 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, no Turbo Boost. Ok for basic desktop tasks like web browsing, flash, MS Office, and some gaming.
i5 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, Turbo Boost. i5-430 and 450 are similiar CPUs but the 450 is newer and has slightly faster clock speed. Performance between the two in general is probably less than 10%. i5-520m offers some additional instructions for hardware virtualization and AES encryption which just aid in processing more quickly with a few other benefits
i7 - quad core, multithreaded, no integrated GPU, Turbo Boost - Quad core is powerful, capable of processing eight threads simultaneously, clock speeds generally slower than an i5, but have advantage of processing more threads. No integrated GPU means less battery life because it will be using the dedicated GPU all the time. Most likely 50% less battery life.

Screen - 1366 x 768 brightview or 1600x900 Radiance. The radiance is top of class.

    Note: Amazon is selling the HP ENVY 14-1010NR (WQ784UA#ABA) = 1366 x 768. Non-Radiance display.

Hard Drive / SSD - Hard Drives = cheap, effective storage while adding noise, vibration, and heat. SSD = expensive, fast storage, with no vibration or noise with minimal heat and power consumption. SSD speed is superior to HDDs in two respects; they write 3 to 5 times faster and have seek times that are hundreds of times faster then a HDD. Current gen SSD's have a long life, probably much longer than you'd ever keep your laptop unless you do constant large read/writes to it 24/7.

TYPE OF SSD USED IN THE ENVY 14:
    160GB = Intel X-25M G2 (Trim supported)
256GB = Samsung MMDOE56G5MXP-0VB (Trim supported on some. HP shipping also firmware that doesn't support Trim.

12.5mm Height HDDs will NOT fit in the Envy 14. Even though the service manual says they will. A poster reported that a Samsung 1TB 12.5MM HDD did NOT fit.

    See thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/514949-1tb-hd-install-envy-14-a.html

Memory = 4GB is sufficient for most. Two sticks is fine. You can get up to a negligible 5% performance benefit running dual channel, or two sticks of the same size and speed, as opposed to single stick. But a single stick gives the benefit of just popping in an additional RAM stick later. Otherwise, if you know you'll want 8GB later then maybe go with single 4GB.

Though, you are best to match RAM sticks as mix-match of RAM manufacturers can lead to problems
    .

So if you don't want to take that chance and you know you'll need more than 4GB, you may want to get it configured with 6GB or 8GB.

    RAM SPECS:
1066mhz (if you have i3 or i5 CPU] or 1333 mhz (i7 CPU)

A note about RAM usage: There are not many programs that will use up the sum of 4GB. Requiring more than 4GB is reserved for multitasking of powerful programs or for multitasking very many programs at once. Adobe suite products come to mind and well as some A/V production suite programs.

Battery - The slice battery is apparently the "6 cell" battery they offer for $200 at the moment. It basically form fits the entire bottom of the laptop and is thin and gives up to an extra 100% or perhaps more battery life. No need to swap batteries as it works "smartly" with the built in 8 cell battery (59whr, 12.6 oz). Do a search at images.google.com for "envy slice battery" to see what it looks like. The trade off is that the slice adds weight (1lbs 15oz) and depth (14" x 9" x .5").

Preliminary Battery Runtime Results: (without Slice battery installed) (As executed by Stefan HT) Suggested insertion: jfk33

    - WLAN = ON
    - Display brightness 60%
    - standby at 10%: disabled

    Result: 4:10 hours

See Battery Life Log thread for posters with runtimes of 4:40 and 7hours.

Wifi - Important note (submitted by poster e14) - On the German preconfigured model 1010eg, the wifi card is Broadcom and not Intel as HP has advertised. The US version is Intel as specified (Centrino advanced N 6200).

FAN- The unit is set by default to run the fans at all times and at low speed at idle and during normal tasks. It can be disabled in BIOS. Though some users report that disabling it results in fans coming on every few seconds at medium.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CPU THROTTLING ON BATTERY IN THE ENVY 14:
    - submitted by poster Aleckazee

The processor is able to run at full speed when on battery not like on the Envy 15 where it would be limited to 1.2GHz.

Proof: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6421176-post2308.html scroll down and you will see it.

NOTE ABOUT i7 Processors: They do not allow for switchable graphics. Only dedicated. Therefore a unit outfitted with an i7 processor will consume more power and shorten battery life.

NOTE ABOUT i3-370M Processor: (Contributed by Bronsky and Protiod) Unlike the i5 and i7, the i3's thermal maximum is 90 DegC (unlike 105 for i5/i7). Real world use would not see temps reach that high. But during CPU stressing, it can.

Potential CPU WHINE Fix: (If you experience this anomaly, try one or both of the following)

Warning: Do not touch MSCONFIG processor settings!

If you touch the #of processor settings in MSCONFIG/boot/advanced options you will get false # of Core/Thread readings in CPU-Z.
It will also lock your processor at one core and it will run at max speed.

This might be a real way to get rid of the whine, but with some undesirable consequences.

I posted this warning in the first part of this thread before the wave of posts to get to 10,000 but I will post it again:

WARNING: This document (from Microsoft) says "Note that disabling the processor idle states on a system has severe negative energy efficiency and thermal consequences and should be done only in consultation with the system or processor vendor."

The option to disable processor idle states is hidden by default in Windows 7, but a registry change will make it show up in the advanced options of each power plan.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 \ 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad

If you change the Attributes DWORD value (of the key above) from 1 to 0, you will make the option to disable processor idle state visible in the advanced settings for each power plan.

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Edit power plan -> Change advanced power settings -> Processor power management -> Processor idle disable -> Disable idle

Without this registry change, that option is hidden. However, I am not responsible for anything bad that happens if you try disabling this. :) I don't have my ENVY 14 yet so I don't know what will happen but it appears to be reversible. From what I've gathered, it might make your fans run at all times and could cause higher temperatures as well.

Other solutions that I've come across are a Bluetooth workaround (enabling Bluetooth on some Dell models apparently prevents the CPU from entering these idle states) or enabling a feature for the built-in microphone to "Listen to this device", causing enough processor usage to stay out of the idle states as well.

Can't wait on my Envy 14 to get here!

    Still currently: "Order in production"

    Core i5-450M
    HD 5650M / Intel GMA
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    1600x900 14.5" screen
500GB 7200RPM HDD (to be swapped with OCZ Vertex 60GB)

Edit: Will update this post with first impressions, maybe a review (if we still need more when I get mine), benchmarks, etc. Will obviously list any problems I have or do not have!

Also, I hope I can get the 720p video hack working on my Nexus One (it's running Android 2.2, which is the problem), so I could record a review in 720p for everyone.

May I humbly suggest that you place a link on post # 10,000 to this page?

I was actually typing a reply and it got lost when I clciked 'submit' since you must have ended the thread while I was typing :p Couldn't have to important though, since now that I'm here I forget what I was going to post anyway......

This has already been mentioned a long time ago, but is not an acceptable solution. Whiners: at the very least call HP and make sure they know of your problem and I'd suggest you return it and get a new one.

According to both batterybar and CPUID temp monitors, my battery wear level is at 13%. it was 3% this morning after I turned off my computer after several hours. Is is false reporting? or did my battery actually lose that much capacity?

Agreed that it isn't an acceptable solution and that those with it should RMA their units. Just thought that the people with the whine might want to ensure that it is being caused by the processor/motherboard and not something else internally. I thought I had read that entire thread for this information but I guess I missed some pages somewhere.

From the whine poll it appears that it's more of a quality control issue than a motherboard design flaw, which gives me hope that I won't need to worry about it from the outset when I receive mine next week. *crosses fingers*

I posted this in the old thread but I think it may have been overlooked due to the 10,000th post ordeal. But anyways hopefully someone can help me it out.

I've tried searching to see if anyone else has this problem but nothing came up.

I have a problem with (I believe this is the problem) the high contrast mode. When i turn on my computer and it gets to the log in screen the background is a bright white color.

After i log in everything looks back to normal but when i open something up like fire fox instead of having the home page background, all I see is a search bar.

To fix this problem i have to push the shift + alt + prt sc, this turns on and off high contrast mode.

So my question is: Is there anyway to completely disable this worthless feature? I have went into the the easy access thing in the control panel and found the high contrast mode settings, but there is no way to turn it off.

I think he means replacing the optical drive with an HDD caddy.

Someone said the connector is different from a SATA connector, but that makes little sense. If anyone can post a high-res shot of the connector in the ODD bay, we could probably identify it.

Thought: People are seriously worried about a caddy, and if one will fit. Honestly, if I did a swap, I would put an SSD in the ODD bay and just duct tape it in place or something. Really, it's an SSD, it could bounce all around on the inside and be fine. These things are durable, as they have no moving parts.

Of course, leave the HDD in the bay next to the battery so it surely doesn't move.

Should be no problem to fit 2 1.8' intels in the 2.5" 'bay' just like on the E 15, there is even a custom bracket and cables you can order from HP parts.. The big question is did HP include a second SATA connector on the MOBO for dual drives, and can the controller handle 2 ????? The E 15 actually uses a custom MOBO side connector...

I think in the previous thread it was seen that the optical disk drive could be replaced by a hard drive caddy.

I doubt anyone has the part to try it yet.

EDIT: Here's the post I'm talking about. I think ninja2000 and StealthReventon are considering replacing it.

Ninja2000 figured it out, and says the ODD connector is a standard Sata. Check out posts #7078,8400, & 8403 in the original E14 thread.

And BTW, a quick thanks to all of the "pioneers" for dealing with & figuring out all of the issues (so far) with the Envy 14. Mine is supposed to ship tomorrow, and I have been following the thread regularly and bookmarking any info that seemed like it might come in handy for when I get mine.

Could it be like asparagus modifying the smell of urine? Only 1 out of 5 people can smell it. I wonder if the same holds true on the whine. Maybe it is almost on every laptop but only some can hear it?

I haven't been able to keep up with all the posts in this ludacris speed forum. What has been the range of max. GPU overclock speeds and what's the differece in overall performance between a standard 5650 and the one in the Envy? Is it a big deal or no? I do think it's a little dishonest of HP to sell a slower version of the card, but maybe it's not that big of a deal.

It's not dishonest because ATI specs show it can be manufactured with a GPU from 450 to 650 MHz.

There's been lots of discussion in the Envy 14 Gaming Lounge, especially MagusDraco doing a lot of legwork with overclock. Run over there for a sec and take a peek.

yeah. that maxes out to 585/1040 assuming your card doesn't wanna be annoying (pretty sure the 1040 wouldn't be stable. most people can't even get any memory OCing to be stable)

Well, 585/1040 is a great start. I'll probably just see if I can achieve 550/800 (better get 800  ) and work my way up from there. You usually achieve best improvement with GPU RAM boost over GPU boost anyhow, at least on a % to % increase basis. Most RAM can achieve 10% overclock with no voltage adjustment, so hopefully at least 860-880 for the RAM.

    My Envy 14 story:

My laptop arrived today at 2:30. After lunch I had time to plug it in and try it out at 3:30. I booted the E14 up, skipped all the registration stuff, and was amazed by the screen's quality when I was finally on the Windows 7 desktop. I closed the lid and went off to watch Inception.

I came home at 7:30, opened up the lid, and it would wake up from sleep. I powered down, booted back up, and it said "insert bootable disk" or something like that.

I went into BIOS, did a hard drive test and no hard drive was detectable. Now I'm dreading having to sit through customer service to sort this crap out!

EDIT: and it's making a beeping noise from the HD area.
