I was hoping somebody could help me out. A friend of mine has an Envy 14 with broadband which he has never used. He was going to give me his broadband card to use with my newly ordered Envy 14 but I am unsure if there will be a slot available on the motherboard as I did not order the broadband card configuration. Can anyone who didn't add the Broadband card to their customized order please check their mobo to see if there is a slot available under your HDD? It would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you didn't order the notebook with broadband, the antenna is not likely installed.
    One way to tell:
Take off the bottom panel of the laptop.
There are two wires that go to the WiFi card (I cannot recall what color); they originate from the lid.
Along the same path of those two wires, should be a third. That is the broadband antenna wire. If you don't have it, you cannot install the broadband card.

someone did successfully take apart their Envy 14 screen so it is possible..when you order the radiance from the parts store it comes with the entire top lid so you have to disassemble that also..unless you don't mind having a laser-etched lid on the beats edition. It's also the fact that it cost like $350 in the parts store

Just wondering, is it harmful to the laptop or battery life at all if I keep it in sleep mode for a long time, like, an hour or two a day?

I'm just wondering because my class schedule this year is a little weird. I'll have my laptop on for two classes in a row, then in sleep mode for an hour or so, then on for an hour, and off for and hour on my way home.

nope shouldnt be a problem. I leave my notebooks on sleep all night, I only shut down/hibernate like once a week. Li-on batteries only get damaged if drained to 0% all the time

I will be extremely mad if i traded my beats for a reg envy w/ no radiance. I doubt they would do that though. Would be a lot of mad customers.

ok awesome. This is my first laptop so I'm new to the whole battery thing. I was a big desktop advocate before, but now that I'm going back to school its much easier to type notes than write them.

That is correct, there are no antennas for the broadband, however there is a proper pcie slot for it... if you feel adventurous enough, you could pull the screen apart and mount one in there, however it is NOT an easy job and not for the faint hearted.

The only other option would be if you swapped the whole lid of the computer (including LCD)... that would make the job much easier...

I've been trying to search for this, but I don't know if this is possible:

Can we switch the internal slot loading DVD/RW for the Envy 17's bluray drive? Just order it from parts, and pop it in? or are they too different in size/dimension?

Depends on the battery, but generally the more you drain it to below 30% the more you negatively impact the life of the laptop.

Is there a way to switch the fn keys so that to use the F keys I just press it and to use the keys like brightness, volume, etc I have to press it with the fn key? Right now it's the other way around.

Pretty sure it should be in the BIOS. If not, just google "invert FN keys", there might be some program to download. I know on my Dell I could change it though the BIOS and through the Dell setup wizard.

Check the latest BIOS. Lenovo puts this option in BIOS from what I have seen, may be HP does the same.

    Restart

Press F10 to access BIOS settings (gotta be quick to press it)

Go to the page where the "Action Keys Mode" option is

    Choose "Disabled" instead of "Enabled"

    Save and Exit

    Enjoy :)

Oh and whenever you flash the BIOS this will change back to enabled.

I didnt order the envy...i sent it in for repair on january 13. The executive case manager I talked to said I would get it back in 3-5 days...bunch of BS. Anyone out there have good things to say about the repair center? All I remember reading were horror stories of the many hundreds of pages they were on.

I had a similar nightmare and in my case I had paid for in-home service but they convinced me to send it in because they said they had the parts available only for replacement at their repair center. Well, surprise, surprise, they didn't have the parts either and my laptop was sitting there for weeks. The worst part is the case managers have no way of contacting the repair center other than via their computer system and it takes days for them to get the status of your repair. Just hope your system doesn't come back scratched up.

Did they update the graphics driver for our ENVY 14? I see the drivers were dated 12/03/2010 but the weren't there in December when I checked. Unless I missed it.
They seem to have fixes the crashing of IE9 (GPU acceleration on the intel GPU mode.)

Hey guys. I am a recent proud owner of an Envy 14. This thing is amazing, apart from one tiny little problem. When I press down on the "i" key it seems to not rebound back like the other keys. For example, when I press any other key down, it immediately pops back up. The i key takes its sweet time doing so. As if something sticky is underneath. Now I need this laptop for school and so I cannot afford to really have it RMAd(i got it from amazon). Do you guys have any ideas that I can try such that I wont have to return it or void my warranty?

They just called me saying that they are short on parts, and I won't get it until feb 4....

honestly, a little bummed about this.

First the laptop fan is always running (even when idling) i mean is that REALLY necessary HP?

Now the right speaker "buzzes" when any noise comes from it. quite annoying, especially for a "high end" laptop.

I looked for some fixes but couldn't find any.

    Anyone? :(

Im sure this has been asked a million times before but...im about to do a complete clean install on my Envy 14 (previously i've only done a minimised recovery), im sorting out the discs now and backing everything up onto an external drive, but do I need to keep the "SwSetup" folder on Local Disc C: after i've done the install?

I know it contains the drivers and i'll use the folder after i've done the install to clean up anything that windows hasn't automatically found and installed but im going to be keeping the recovery partition, just in case, so if anything goes wrong in the future I can just recover back to that...right?

Also can I remove the "HP_TOOLS" partition on my hard drive? It only takes up 100MB but I don't see the point of it...

Cheers for any help guys :)

You don't need to put the SwSetup folder back on the C: drive. Good idea to copy it to an external drive because there is some software in there you cannot download from HP. You will be able to install the drivers/software from the external disk.

I would leave the HP_TOOLS partition; it has the diagnostic tools on it (and really, what is 100MB?)

Lastly, yes. You boot off of disk 1 for recovery (if you so choose to restore the image). It'll ask if you want to use the image in the recovery partition which is much faster.

try using revo uninstaller to completely uninstall the drivers, and re-install them from the hp website or swsetup. then install the hpql driver to fix the light issue.

i dropped my laptop and the LCD i believe was cracked. i sent it in for repairs but im worried because i heard here that they dont make the envy 14s with the radiance display anymore. will mine be replaced with a nonradiance display? this would me off on so many levels. i checked the status of my repair and im seeing this message,

"Hewlett-Packard is awaiting the arrival of a part to complete your product repair. Once the part is received, Hewlett-Packard will expedite the repair of your product and its return to you. So that you may monitor progress, any change in status or expected delivery date will be posted to this web site as soon as possible."

Now I dont know if this is hp just being typical unprepared hp. i had to wait a long time for them to get more motherboards before for this laptop. should i expect to have to wait a long time again and will they give me a display different than the one i had? (radiance 1600x900) since apparently they dont have them anymore.

What are you running the graphics off of, the ati or intel? If you are plugged in and have the ati on, it isn't the laptop fan.

The speakers do not buzz, you have something that is defective.

The Graphics are on the ATI, as I have an I7.

There is still a warranty on it, so I *could* send it in, but I am a student and not having my laptop for 2 weeks is unacceptable.

Anyone know if I can buy another speaker from HP? Would they do that? I know its defective, because when I switch the stereo from left to right, one of them sounds quite nice, the other "buzzes".

Will opening the laptop void the warranty, or will they know? Maybe its touching the side or something...

Use the HP media creation software that's already on your Envy to create DVD restore discs. For this you'll probably need around 4 blank DVDs.

Then use ABR (Activation Backup and Restore) | directedge.us (ABR tool) to backup your Windows 7 activation so that you can restore it after reinstalling. I recommend running this tool on a USB stick.

Once you've done this, and backed up anything else you may need off your paritions, just reinstall Windows and completely erase the drive during installation and start with a fresh NTFS partition. I don't think you'll need the HP restore partition, as the restore DVDs will have everything in case you need to restore the laptop to factory defaults.

Windows 7 ISOs can be found here (legal, of course. Just make sure you install Home Premium): http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

Once you've reinstalled Windows use these drivers: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-dm4-dv5-gen-2-g32-cq32-envy-14-intel.html (they're newer than the ones from the HP Support portal)

I've done this approach when I installed my own SSD. I now have an ultra fast clean install on an SSD which is already waaay faster than the stock HDD that came with the Envy. :)

Dear god....what is up with people dropping the Envy14 w/ radiance displays!? I'm on the same boat as you bucknasty =/ I sent mine in for repair 1/13/11. The expected delivery date was 1/21/11...but it just got delayed to 2/4/11. They called me to tell me that the parts for my laptop have been backordered therefore delayed return date.
I plan on calling my case manager sometime next week to arrange something like me getting a Beats with SSD if my laptop comes back with BV display (because I paid $300 for the radiance months ago) or if it is delayed for another 2 weeks as compensation.

oh god that's terrible news. my classes start on monday and im a comp sci major so i need my laptop asap! i had a feeling this would get delayed i mean everything seems to get delayed with hp and now they actually have a legit excuse (i suppose) to delay. now i could probably get by without my laptop til 2/4 but i worry we wont even get them then. hp jerks their customers around like no other and they just throw around dates left and right without really putting any thought behind him. if this is anything like all my other experiences with hp then they will keep delaying and delaying and not provide us with any useful information that would give us peace of mind.

My classes already started, and the night before I dropped my laptop I bought DAT [dental admissions test] stuff that can only be viewed on one PC (which happened to me my laptop). It's a 120-day trial, and everyday HP keeps my laptop, the more days I lose =[

I sent my case manager an email....hopefully she will reply by the next business day.

I cracked the screen on my old dv6700 computer and didn't use it for 6 months because I got an envy. Sent the envy back so I plugged my old computer via hdmi to my tv. It worked twice then all of a sudden when I turn it on it shows the hp logo then straight to a black screen where it stays. I did the hard drive test and it said my hard drive was bad. Is there any thing that might work besides getting a new hard drive? I figured I'd already ask before I spent more money on a computer... gosh I really hope my envy isn't cancelled.

Can anyone shine some light on VGA adapters for my Envy? I have found HDMI to VGA adapters online, but I have also read about a mythical Mini Display Port adapter? Is one better than the other? Where can I buy the MDP adapter?

you can buy it from either HP store or Apple. I have the Apple one and it's working fine.

I tried a friend's Apple MDP adapter to no avail! I have also read about others experiencing the same issue?
