My fans did not cycle at all. They would always stay on low until the temps reach about 48c.

My idle is around 30-35c and i had no cycling at all.

I like how they implied that it would be an A on a term paper and then give it a grade equal to a B.

Well I think I'm gonna get mine repaired anyways...

A Futureshop tech guy said they'd take care of the shipping and handling with HP so at least I won't have trouble with that. Just hope it won't take too long!

The whine is just too annoying when you spent 1.5k on it.

Wow, this thread really does move fast. It's the standard (and the only) config available in Canada. I didn't upgrade anything yet. It was listed for $1599.99 at BB and Futureshop but I was able to price match it and ended up paying $1508 after taxes and everything. Futureshop has the same config now for $1699...

You gotta download it and burn it to a disc. Or you could run the minimized image recovery that some people opt to do.

So I just did a clean install and now my trackpad doesn't work. Tried the correct synaptics drivers, but it won't even work when setting up windows using the provided windows drivers.

    Any idea?

    Pros:
-All drivers and settings are there
    -Faster
    -Easier

    Cons:
-Need to uninstall a few things (MediaSmart gets reinstalled)

    I didn't see anything else.

When you start with your first HP recovery DVD, it will boot into a selection screen and "minimal recovery" is an option there.

I guess what the others are saying is that when you put the DVD in the drive, keep pressing ESC key repeatedly and it will give you an option to select boot option. I have mine set in the BIOS to choose DVD, then USB Flash, then hard drive.

How long is forever? I just picked it, walked away, and came back when it asked for the next DVD, kept plugging away, then it was done. If its sitting at a screen for a really long time, I would press and hold the power button down to shut down. But only if your hard disk light is not showing disk activity or its clear the machine is frozen.

I got BB to price match pc-computer.com. I've never heard of the site before but it had one of the lowest prices after googling for envy 14-1050ca. It was something like $1433. Even though some forum members reported having difficulty in getting BB to price match online stores I tried it anyway and I guess I got an easy going customer service person. They did add the price of shipping on though, but I guess that's expected...

Also, I got the guy who checked out my computer to check what kind of employee pricing they get on the new Envy and it was like $1500 with employee pricing. So in the end I paid less than what an employee at BB would've bought it for!! w00t! Still slightly more expensive than USA of course, but meh, it's not AS much of a ripoff with the price match.

Depends on where you are, what class, etc. In most of my classes, getting 80% almost guarantees you an A.

Edit: My engineering classes, that is. The liberal arts ones you actually have to get above a 90% to get an A, usually, unless the professor is one of the few who actually likes being hard and grades on a curve.

That's only driver issue...you might as well go with the minimal recovery option instead of clean install, so you dont need to have headache with the driver.

This is awesome! I would say both Engadget and Notebook Mag practically loved the E14! NotebookMag even wrote another article calling the ENVY the 14 in MBP, and (almost) recommending it over the mbp! Though the poll shows that ppl would choose the E14 over a MBP over 2 to 1. Perchance have you all secretly been going there and stuffing those ballots? (cuz i know i would!)

    Haha... I love you guys.

I miss three days... and... do universities offer comp sci credit for reading this thread?

I read the two reviews... oddly enough none complained about any flex or build issues, if anything they praised them both. Maybe it was just with the early batches?

If anyone can give me a quick rundown, an "update" of sorts, it would be appreciated.

Hope you all are enjoying your Envy 14s. I'm truly envious. hehehe.

Hey guys heres my situation what should I do?

    OptimusBoner writes...

Uh expect longer than an hour...maybe 2 the minimum? I wasnt keeping track of time.

Managed to return my envy 14 back to jb in doncaster and they are exchanging it for one in narre warren which I will get by the end of the week.
They said they were gunna repackage and resell my one...the flaws arent so obvious so if you call them up and they all of a sudden have one in stock then chances are they are reselling you mine so make sure you guys check. There's a dead SUBpixel towards the bottom middle just a little bit to the right which will show up red on a white background and the eject and delete keys aren't properly level.

Hoping my new one doesn't have the same issues or god forbid any seam issues..also hope the one I'm getting isn't a repackaged one or an ex display model.

    WHAT I WROTE:

    Dude i think i was about to get that one today. Here's the story;

I went to JB Dandeong, asked about the envy etc. got it for $1695, my rents go to pay for it. Then the sales guy comes back and says sorry there all gone ( the thing is I rang the store before to make sure there was some in stock) apparently JB chadstone sold it to others. So the salesman rings up JB narrewarren and he comes back to me saying, they have one there, then i metioned that the only one they have is one with the opened box ( I rang the day before). Then the sales guy replys to me that "they have two", I said the same thing again he repeats what he says again so im guessing maybe he was right.

So then i end up going to Narrewarren JB showed my receipt and the Sales Rep there brings out the laptop in the bag. Then i asked them to show me the box and boom it had tears on the top of the box and when he opened it out the laptop was out of its bag. I said i wasnt going to get it, and the Sales rep at Narrewwarren JB said "didnt the guy tell you" , Then i said " I told him that you guys only had one with the box opened, but he told us theres two". So Whats happening now is that There getting one from Camberwell to dandeong for me to pickup. Funny thing is they just like expected us to drive to camberwell to pick it up ( the dude from Dandeong). So be careful of The sale rep called Jason at JB dandeong his alright customer service but he fked up bad lol.

Now I'm gonna have to make the purchase again because of the 7 day trail period JB have, plus the warrenty is being used up without me owning it. What I'm thinking is asking the salesrep at dandeong to reduce the price even further for all the troubles caused. How much do you guys reckon?

Ps' the quote was from another forum in Aus.

Probably not since they have 2 mobos (i3/i5 and i7). The one for i7s has dedicated graphics only and uses the 45watt quads. The i7-620 is dual, 35 watt, and has integrated graphics.

Very likely, as i7 620M is very close to i5 540M/520M/450M/430M (the i7/i5 denomination do not mean a lot here, just make you believe it is far better...)

For exemple look at every other switchable graphics/optimus computers that can use any dual core i5/i7

How much difference in battery life is there with a clean install/minimized image recovery? I've been noticing some underwhelming results after running it out of the box.

With wifi on, bluetooth off, discrete graphics off, screen at minimum brightness, power saver mode, I'm getting a little over three hours of use with light web browsing.

    Wait.
Couldn't they use the i5 mobo? All the i5 options use 35 watts, are dual-core, and have integrated graphics.

Another person did get HP to put a 540 in their Envy after sending it back for some reason; that may be what you're thinking of :p

And to the people celebrating their shipping dates on the previous page, I hate to be negative but they could be RMA'd Envy 14s u_u
My deepest sympathies if they are, and have real defects.

Just got my second envy today...I've got them both side by side now. The new one's trackpad is completely flush with the palmrests, which is cool, as my 1st one was raised slightly. Although I didn't mind that at all, it's nicer this way. Also, the little rectangular thing on the front (blutooth i believe) is also flush on the new one, whereas on the first one it jutted out a little. My HP logo is beautiful, unlike on the first one, which is good as well. I'm still not sure whether it has a whine or not, I kinda think I've heard it already sometimes, so that sucks, but hopefully it doesn't get bad...I'm gonna have to live with it.
The new one definitely has some more keyboard flex than the old one...when I press down the L, O or P button far enough, I can kinda feel/hear it like sticking to something? Anybody else get that?

Overall I'm very pleased with my replacement :)
