The i3 is less powerful the i5 is more powerful. That's really it. With the power increase comes higher battery drain but conversely being able to do more in less time.
If you're just document editting, web browsing, etc. Go for the i3. Now in my case, I do photo editting, heavy video editting for a Modern Warfare 2 Channel on Youtube and in a year going to college for Computer Science.
So the i5-520's VT-D, Turbo Boost, etc, was more of a fit for me.
-
well its not all about the turbo boost, the i3 is rated at max 90C degrees while the i5's are rated at 105C. Not saying your temps will go that high but its possible... also there are a couple more features that come with the i5's which i will never use but everything is on the first page of this thread.
-
I don't know what's wrong ... I know i have i5-450, CPU-Z says i5-450 but on HWMonitor, it says i5-520... does anyone know the solution for this ? maybe i have i5-520 ?
-
many users have reported this, it appears to be a glitch in HwMonitor
-
ah okay thanks

Guys, the supplier of radiance screens is no longer producing them and hp has not been able to find a suitable replacement. The radiance is back up because they have about 100 left in stock. Order today to avoid a long oos wait...
-
guys i've got a big issue... when i got into system recovery by pressing f11 the little white blinking dash indicating where you type is just flickering across the bottom of the screen. Have I got a lemon? It wasn't doing this before
edit: could this be because i deleted the recovery partition??? do i have to do recovery from disk only now? -
good source. mark.
-
How can you say that? Any proof?
-
I just got a call from a lady at their hq...I setup? A call alert with that jason guy from the "radiance screen not an opgtion for envy" thread. I asked her what haooened with the screen and she bluntly told me everything. She said they were running it as a tes, it was very popular so they went back to supplier who either could not or would not make more. They have 100 of the screens still in stock, but have not found a suitable manufacturer to start production again. She said they r looking but didn't know how long it would take. I wouldn't post this if it wasn't told to me...maybe she's full of it, but she seemed pretty convincing and honest
-
is there a way to restore the recovery partition?
-
I clean installed my e14. i installed the turbo boost driver. how do i know if it's working ? i looked at cpu-z and it says 2.40 2.40. i don't see any 2.63
-
i finally decide to go with radiance....
-
say playing sc2 and the background is a huge photoshop project.
-
I would use the DVD's.
-
Download Prime95 from here:
64-bit: http://mersenneforum.org/gimps/p64v2511.zip
32-bit: http://mersenneforum.org/gimps/p95v2511.zip
Run it as small fft's.
Your CPU should show 2.66. Just run one or two workers and it should show 2.93.
edit: Hmm, even with one worker it still only shows 2.66GHz. -
So what are the chances of us OCing the proc? Or even replacing the proc to a i5 540 or i7 620?
Also, I got a new high 3dmark score for me. 7982 with an OC of 530/980. So close to breaking 8k lol. -
u can replace to i5-540m for sure, not sure about i7-620 tho
-
Radiance is back up. Think I should buy it now or wait for a deal. I'm wondering if there will be a deal now or around the holidays (latest I can wait)
-
okay. i'm gonna bite the bullet. pull the trigger. fling the pie. lol, whatever the saying is/can be.
envy 14 with everything stock
radiance screen
1190 after tax.
(student discount)
i need it by sept 18th...but i'm tired of waiting lol.
estimated build date:aug 30th. hopefully it'll come in a week like my friend's dm4
oh and does it matter which adapter i get? my external(s) are vga and dvi, but i think i'm only bringing the vga one to college. should i get hdmi>vga or displayport>vga? -
Congrats on your purchase. Even stock with Radiance screen is a nice machine.
I'd say displayport to VGA because it's probably a lot cheaper. -
thanks htwingnut!
and i agree. amazon has one for ~16 (displayport to dvi) and i have a vga>dvi adapter alrdy, so that should bode well!
oh and let me check:
i'm planning to do minimal system recovery instead of clean recovery
after that, should i just slap 10.7a catalyst on top of the drivers? will it work?
i remember magusdraco saying he needed 10.3beta or alpha or something before slapping on the newest drivers. -
once again, thank you.
-
I bought these Hdmi to DVI for a couple pennies of $3: Amazon.com: Eforcity Black 6FT /2 Meter HDMI Male to DVI Male Cable: Electronics
-
Was there ever any decision on a screen protector for the Envy 14? Everytime I close the lid overnight and open it back, it's like theres another set of smudges and whatnot to clean up.
-
Any ideas of why my scrolling is so jumpy even after changing the settings of the wheel scroll to 1? I followed the guide, but whenever i scroll it looks fragmented
-
WOW. really? four cents? ups must make a lot of money from shipping things like these....
thanks for the link! -
Hi all, first post on these forums!
I'm considering getting the Envy 14 here in the Netherlands, where we only have fixed configurations. It has the Core i5 450M, 2x2GB, 500GB 7200rpm HDD and Radiance screen. It's very expensive here, but I think it's worth it... On to my question:
I plan on replacing the HDD with an SSD. I've seen on plenty of video's that replacing the HDD will not be a problem since it will be easy to reach. The problem lies in getting the OS to the SSD with all drivers and programs.
Can somebody explain step by step what I need to do to get the OS working on the SSD with all the drivers etc?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers -

Zagg might be making an invisibleshield too. -
stop touching your screen and you'll be fine
-
MagusDraco used 10.6 beta I believe, but that was to get 10.6 to work. Now with the 10.7a hotfix drivers, so far they've seemed to install fine for everyone right on top of the 10.3 that come with the Envy 14. See my guide in my sig.
Just create your system recovery DVD's (requires 4 - takes a few hours so be paitent) once you get your envy, and backup (by copy/paste) the C:\SWSetup folder to DVD (requires 2) or external hard drive or wherever.
Then plug in your SSD, and reinstall off your system recovery DVD's. -
What would I gain by Installing 10.7?
-
it takes 2 dvds to copy SWSetup ? I only used one. Total size of the folder was like 3.7gb or 3.4gb
-
Improved performance with Bad Company 2 and no invisible units in Starcraft 2. At least the two games that I play, it affected. Mainly for Bad Company 2 for me, but I heard there were issues with units not showing up in SC2, that was the main reason for this "10.7a hotfix update" but it also works worlds better than the 10.7 drivers.
-
I noticed that the 2 gig SD card that HP provides has a bunch of crap on it that can't be deleted, and it is write protected. Is there any way around this?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
there's a switch on the card to turn off write protection.
now if all the individual files are write protected..eh...formatting may work -
On the sd card there's a little switch that says "Lock", push it down to unlock and you should be able to erase the manuals on there and use it for whatever you want. .
-
Awesome, thanks.
I AM NOT. BUT IT'S SO SHINYYYY AND BRIGGHHTTT OOOOOH. -
thanks htwingnut! i'd give you rep but i'm supposed to "spread around rep" before re-repping you lol
-
So I don't really have time for a clean install, but the minimal recovery will wipe all the unnecessary crap that the Envy doesn't need to run, right? Does it significantly reduce running process making it a better alternative to clean install vs. time required? No one definitively explained the advantages of one over the other. I would prefer a clean install but HP f*****d me when they decided to keep my Envy longer for repair. Thanks.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
minimal recovery is a clean install except hp mediasmart stuff is installed.
...and possibly the hp support assistant (but not sure 'bout that one)
as for the differences in processes running...I dunno. -
Awesome! Thanks.
-
Eh, that's good enough for me. Thanks
-
I take it you got your Radiance screen issue taken care of?
-
anybody that wants to get rid of the system diagnostics partition may do so and there is now a download at HP drivers page for the diagnostics that will allow you to install to a USB drive. Thought some people might be interested.
-
Yup. Placed my order earlier today with a pricematch to my original order including an additional 50 dollar credit.
-
Thanks man, awesome! I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up! +1
-
Any recommendations for some really good earphones to use with the laptop? Heard Sennheiser is great, but which ones? Want to spend no more than $150 or so.
-
I have a pair of Sennheiser PC 165's. I think they updated it with PC 166 now. Nice thing is that they come with a USB adapter too, which has come in handy on several occasions. Helped with troubleshooting and also eliminated some issues I had with TeamSpeak or other online VOIP's.
Haven't tried them on my Envy 14 yet though, although I should to see if it gets rid of that god awful hiss. Right now I just use some Sony earbuds. -
How does one manually switch the graphics. I am on battery and power saver settings. Most of the time, when I do this it asks if I want to switch. Sometimes it doesn't and I have to restart. However I should not have to do that. When I click on the ATI symbol on the task bar I get configure switchable graphics. I have the "Automatically select power-saving GPU..." enabled, so that is correct. I try to hit the Power-saving GPU in the "Choose a Graphics Processing Unit" area, but nothing happens when I click it, even if I un-click the "Automatically select power-saving GPU..." option. No matter what I do the "Current active Graphics Processing Unit" is the High-Preformance GPU."
Can anyone instruct me on what I am doing wrong.
