Did you ever try running the troubleshooter in Devices and Printers on both the wireless mouse and its transceiver as I mentioned in an earlier post? Right click the device then click troubleshoot--maybe Windows can find/add something to the drivers or configurations that will help. Guess you loaded the real Logitech drivers for the mouse and not just the generic Windows drivers? I'm using wireless Microsoft Explorer Mini mouse and made sure to load up the drivers for it--no problems so far.

I would do a clean install/minimum recovery and make sure I partition the HD. Seems to me you might infected by a virus/trojan that might still there on your boot section, unless you partition the drive.

should I restore my HD to my latest backup and tried to update again? Not sure after BSOD if there is some registry/some entries somehwre that I dont want to be on my system.

Well, I'm about out of ideas. The only other thing I did is check the "disable Synaptics trackpad" option when it detects an external pointing device. In the device settings for Synaptics. Have you done that? I get a balloon when the computer boots telling me that it detected an external device and the trackpad has been disabled. Maybe there is a driver conflict with both pointers trying to work at the same time--just a thought. Trying anything to save sending your Envy back to HP!

does nothing at all work (mouse and trackpad) or just the mouse.

'cause I mean...you could try a clean install/recovery disc install or something out of desperation.

maybe windows got screwed up. well actually you could try HIREN's Boot disc or something and see if the wired mouse works in that thing's tiny xp mode.

I wouldn't worry about the BSOD unless it happens again. System restore and reinstalling would probably be a safe bet. As you said, it will remove the potentially conflicting registry entries. Before you reinstall may I suggest going into Power Management and setting your power buttons action to turn the computer off so if you get the blank screen issue, it will be easier to shut down properly. Hopefully the BSOD was just a one time thing...

the trackpad works fine. it just doesnt seem to recognize mice anymore.

and i might just do a minimal system recovery and hope to god that fixes it.

what's this HIREN's boot you speak of?

Does anyone know if the ability to turn off Lan Power Saving in BIOS is a new feature of f.12? The Intel anti theft technology sounds pretty cool if you're worried about someone stealing your laptop (as someone who suffered from laptop theft earlier this year it sounds absolutely awesome). There are some pretty cool features that it offers detailed on their website if you have appropriate software installed I'm sure.

Ooh thanks, hopefully that helps. It sounds like I might need to reinstall some of the HP annoyance-ware. We'll see how that goes.

Hmm, I don't think the Recovery manager is in the SWsetup folder. Blah. Unless it's one of HPSF, envsdut, HPUG, or HPWA.

    Aha! Search functions are useful.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...hp-envy-14-owners-lounge-939.html#post6497061

I copied over the hidden files, after it finishes downloading Windows updates I'll reboot and see if Quickweb is there.

Hmm, no luck it seems. But at least that helps maybe.

Most users seem to think it is worth it, myself included. Someone posted some pics of it somewhere in the forum, though I do not believe anyone has had the 2 screens side by side...
Hmm... with the new HP graphics drivers, ccc dosen't disappear from the start menu. There is also an option in the catalyst folder to "restart runtime" I wonder if this will help when graphics switching dosen't work. Does anyone else know what "restart runtime" would do?

It did revert it to just pressing f2 or f3 for brightness control, but those dont work after putting the computer to sleep or hibernate. They worked before though. I can still change the brightness through Windows though.

EDIT: Seemed to be something other than Hibernate and sleep. Or maybe I need to do them on Intel graphics, butits working after restarting an trying them again.

Hiren's boot CD is some sort of ginormous boot cd compilation of computer fixing stuff (undeleters, hard-drive formatters/partition things, and everything else under the sun apparently)

some of it isn't free but works on the disc anyway so...the disc is probably not free. I mean if you have any other sort of bootable OS thing you could try that.

    Hi all,

I know there's a forum on Envy fan noise, but it seems to be quiet of late and my issue is different from the high speed fan problems most are reporting in that forum. I hope it's okay to post here.

I'm curious how many of you have Envys that are completely silent at idle vs. Envys with the fan on constantly but quietly. My fan is always on, but at a low level (the room has to be pretty silent to hear it and the fan only surges when on a load).

I think the fan was off for the first few days I got it but I'm not 100% sure. In response, I've updated the BIOS to disable "fan always on" and that didn't work. I've also run HWMonitor and SpeedFan and interestingly enough neither gives me info on the fan speeds. Just CPU temps and other basics (temps, btw, are about 35 C for the CPU and 44 C for the GPU, again with only IE open).

Is constant but soft fan use normal? Or did I get a lemon? I don't find a fan going when it's needed, but I do prefer a silent laptop when it's hardly working.

    Thanks for your opinions.

    Another issue, another post:

When you're running at idle or with just IE or another program (e.g. Word) open, how much RAM is generally used? My system seems to use a lot, even when there aren't many things running. For example, just with IE open I'm looking at 30-40% RAM usage.

I've checked the Task Manager and none of the other background processes seem inappropriate.

    Is such usage normal?

    Thanks,
    JGE

You may try setting processor power cooling policy to passive mode in advanced power settings, can't say it will work, but it may help. But it could also let computer heat up too...
I'm using 1.36 GB of 4 GB, I have my pagefile turned off (not recommended). It's around 34% in task manager.

Probably, haven't used windows Image backup. Most users recommend to test out the restore functionality of a backup/image to ensure it will work.
You got the BIOS updated, awesome :D
Just go into the power management, change plan settings, change advanced settings and turn everything you can down on battery, I did this and haven't had much of a performance hit, even with my processor set at 25% max on battery.
That would be up to you, if you want a backup to your backup, leave it, if you need the space or aren't worried about backup for backup then delete it. I deleted mine, probably shoulda tested my recovery discs before I did though...

that method looked complicated, kudos. Check on intel's website about their anti theft technology, this BIOS added support for it and they can apparently do some science fiction type stuff with it. Does anybody know if the turn lan power savings off option is new to the f.12 BIOS?

Alright, I tried living with it, but my second envy is really annoying. Are all of yours, besides fan noise, completely quiet? Mine is making a fairly loud staticy noise pretty constantly. It's very audible and I don't have to have my head up to the computer to hear it. It's not the whine, just like staticy buzzing...has anyone else experienced this? Anybody have any suggestions?

Side note...When I open iTunes, i swear to god, a high pitch sound starts up and continues, and when I close it it goes away...f itunes

Tell me if you hear anything like this (you'll need to wear headphones):

Above the K & I keys (the clearest part of the sound is at about 0:45)

    or this

Above the direction keys (this shows that sound that happens when under load. I assume this is the "morse code" problem people talk about. Listen to 0:42.)

These are the sounds I recorded when I sent this e14 in for repair. I put the sounds on the desktop with a note for the techs to have a listen in case that would help them. As many here have said, it could either be a bad inductor coil or a bad cap. The techs switched out the motherboard and sent it back to me, and it's still making those same sounds. I'm now having a second one cross-shipped.

I can't stand that high piched sound. While there's a lot of different noises you hear in the background, there should be one that's distinct. I'm a sound engineer and thought I should measure it to see what frequency it was. It seems to float at about 15.8KHz. This is about the same frequency as the "flyback frequency" that comes from older CRT-based televisions. I've noticed that the people that never heard that sound (or who didn't know what I was talking about) also don't seem to be able to hear this high pitched noise either. The dividing line seems to be very weighted towards age.

It's a really high pitched noise, one I'm pretty sure the majority of the population might have a hard time hearing. It's only 4K away from the theoretical limit to human hearing. Because of this, I'm venturing a guess that the people that might have designed and QA'd this device might very well be older in their years and just not heard it, which is why it doesn't seem to be an issue with their tech support staff (the only noise they seem to care about it the noisy fan sound).

I'm hoping the new one doesn't come to me with this problem. If it does, then this is entirely a design problem. This is quite possibly the nicest laptop I've ever used, and it's a damn shame that the ONLY problem I have is an insanely annoying sound that my ears just can't stop hearing. I've trained myself over the years to hear things like that in recordings and I don't think that I can really untrain them. That's why that "once you see it..." meme is so prevalent-- once you start noticing things, you can't really stop.

I'll definitely update when the new one arrives (possibly next week), but after a motherboard swap and it still persisting, I'm skeptical.

I wanted to post these to see if this is what other people are hearing when they talk about CPU whine, or if this is a whole other problem altogether. What do you say?

Oh, and when I say in the recording that I'm putting the CPU under load, I'm running that stopwhine .bat file someone whipped up a while ago. It totally works, but I don't think I should have to cut 20% from my battery life to have a quiet computer.

The part that sucks now is that anyone who needs a replacement exchange with the 1600x900 radiance display, to my knowledge, can no longer get one.

That's not exactly true. I had that problem when I went to order on Monday, and the rep confirmed it. I said we'll wait until it gets into stock. She called up the very next morning and said they were available, and that it was only a website glitch. I ordered it and when I got off the phone went to configure another just to see if the option was back. Sure enough, HD Radiance display was back. It even says it in the parts list for my build.

Now that I went back just now to check, it's gone again.

Here's the thing-- I've been having so many problems with this thing that they moved me up to Tier 1 support, and then to TCO. The TCO guy called me back this morning because I had left a message with him after I got off the phone with him on Monday, telling him that Radiance is no longer an option and I want a replacement. Well, during today's call he told me that the website has real-time stock figures, and will pull an option if they run out of stock. He could have been bullshiţing me, but he was saying that this is one of the fastest selling computers they've ever had (I don't doubt it-- look around) and that the display manufacturer is having a hard time keeping up. If that's the case, I wouldn't be too worried... it just means if people want one they have to check back frequently.

Just know that I got one ordered on Monday, which was a few days after the initial freak out everybody had, so it's not permanently pulled. This will probably happen a few more times until manufacturing can keep up or sales dies down.

Now about the sound and .7z things I was asking about...

Well according to one guy (HP rep could have been BSing him though), the supplier of this screen is no longer producing this screen and HP won't be getting a replacement any time soon as this was just a trial run (probably for great reviews and stuff).

If you look at the Envy 13, they initially launched with an incredible screen (400 nits) then once the limited stock sold out they never sold it again.

Alright so I got my envy a while ago, but am just now going to school again. I ordered mine with lojack but I don't know how to activate/set it up. Can anyone shed some light on this subject? Is there a particular number on the computer that I need to write down in order to activate lojack if the computer is stolen?
