would the i5-520m show a noticeable performance increase over the i5-450m and what other advantages are there for having the 520 over the 450? This has probably been answered in the first thread but i never really got to read much of it =/

Both have same base clock frequency of 2.4GHz. i5-520m has 266MHz faster turbo boost (2.93GHz vs 2.67GHz), and has additional features/support/improved performance for VT-d virtualization and AES encryption, and something called Trusted Execution Technology.

If you don't know what those are, don't worry, I don't really either, then you probably don't need it. In general you will find a marginal difference with performance between the two.

Thanks, I didn't think the speed difference would be noticable as the only real cpu intensive tasks i'd be doing is photoshop. I'm planning to run a triple boot setup with xp, win 7 and ubuntu so was wondering if the 450m would be unable to support it.

Plan on having lots of trouble. Many modern motherboards/chipsets don't support Windows XP, and people have been having trouble installing XP on HP Intel notebooks since 2008 or earlier.

    Hi guys,

I am from the UK and since there is no clear date as to when they will arrive here am thinking of buying an envy 14 from Germany. Has anyone else in the UK done this? Can anyone recommend a reliable retailer in Germany ?

    Thanks !

Why order it from germany? You realise you're going to have to change the keyboard yourself? Not sure about customs involvement etc but why not just order it from the US through a company? I would suggest ordering from opal_cadet on ebay uk.

Right JJB, I understand there's going to be a difference in viewing area because of the resolutions.

What I'm having trouble with his how HP can say the Envy 14 screen is 14.5 or 14.6 inches diagonally, yet is 13.1 inches wide and 7.4 inches high.

From everything I can see, it would have to be a 15.1" screen to be that wide and that high with a 16:9 ratio.

Any E14 owners measure their screens and compare the HP specs above?

The screen itself is 14.5 inches wide diagionally. Roughly 12.5 inches wide and 7.25 inches tall. Thats what I measured anyways/

thanks happy - seems like the HP specs in the E14 manual are way off, Your measurements are much closer to what a 14.5" 16:9 screen should be.

you definitely wanted the 520 instead the 450. The Photoshop will make use of that extra turbo boost and the 520 have VT which probably will help you greatly in running all those OS. Yeah, definitely the $100 upgrade from 450 to 520 will be wise for your case.

VT probably won't help, considering he's just triple-booting and not running virtual machines

As for the speed boost, odds are there won't be much of a difference. Photoshop is multithreaded for a lot of the more CPU intensive stuff, if I remember correctly, so turbo boost won't really factor in that much.

I think there's no point in getting the 520 over the 450

Mostly only one working E14... And he thanks you. :) Whomever he is. <--I used proper grammar! Wow! First time. Feels nice.

You know you're doing something right when it appears seamless. :D

But by segregating the E14 topics and moving some posts here to the respective ancillary threads, the volume of this thread decreased. And then there's the deleting of posts...

This has been proved with multi core usage benches. 450m=520m as both are running at 2.6ghz per core when two cores are active. Only the 520m runs at 2.9ghz when only one core is active. And even then it doesn't give much more juice. (around 2 to 5% according to the cinebenches we made).
Clearly there's no point in picking the 520m, may aswell save those 100$ to later upgrade to the new 580m (2.6ghz base & max turbo 3.3 ghz) that will come out later this year. If you plan on upgrading you should even simply get the 370m as it is only 10% behind the 420/520m in terms of raw multicore cpu power.

Rumor: Intel will release their G3 SSDs which will be cheaper than the G2s because of the 25nm manufacturing process node and of course, a lot faster.

Rumor: Intel will release 2342 core processor which will run alot faster.

Point of this point. Its a rumor, and tech is changing very fast especially on emerging consumer technology like SSDs, so when you wait for something else to come out something better is just over the horizon.

*prays for no problems in newly ordered Envy 14*

Seriously now that I've had one in my hands I couldn't imagine having a different laptop... all of them aren't as sleek by comparison.

Also, people who suggest vaios: other than the Z every model looks plasticy and feels cheesy

I only posted that tipoff because sasjegbruv123 declared his intention to buy a separate SSD in the future. By no means was I encouraging him to keep waiting for that last big thingie.

My hopes exactly too. This isn't some notebook that I'm chucking aside after 2 years. I'm hoping to keep it for at least 3 years, possibly even 4 barring any unexpected mechanical problems that can't be fixed affordably.

Intel & Micron Announce 25nm NAND Flash Production, SSDs to get Bigger/Cheaper in Q4 - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

I would not, and did not with 30% BCB on my E14, purchase an SSD this year. I know for certain that Intel and Crucial will have more competitive offerings very soon.

I'm a laptop junky, I need the hottest new **** every year and a half.

Seriously I wish I spent more on my wardrobe and less on tech,

Same with my phone, my droid gen 1 is working fine but I want a droid 2 because... well because it's newer, kinda.

Good enough to beat an intel 160 gig ssd for $210?

    In a perfect world maybe

edit* That will only make SSDs more affordable in 2012 and the demand of memory will only increase, it will probably be time to buy a new laptop when SSDs become affordable...

Hopefully I'll keep this lappy around 7 years... managed to push this sony vaio to breaking point on it's last legs now :( Can't wait for an envy 14, looks like a great machine, and I think i may just get the ssd now if i have the finances available within a week and a half or so.

Does anyone know how COD MW2 plays on this machine? I have my xbox for most of the other games i play.

Zeth assuming you're a naruto fan, have you seen ultimate ninja storm 2 due to be released later this year? looks awesome!

Thanks. A little fact-checking never helps. I'm a pretty hands-on guy. Until Intel actually releases the product, such product announcements amount to sparkly sugar sprinkles over the vaporware cookie. I'll believe it when I see it. But that isn't to say I'm not a bit excited to hear about such developments. Definitely worth noting if you're in the market for a SSD and thinking about getting one sometime in late 2010

The flash market in general is just beginning to mature. We probably won't see any major price drops until well in 2011 when all the flash manufacturers (e.g. Samsung, Toshiba, Hynix, Intel/Micron, etc) have finished ramping up production. Toshiba has that ginormous multibillion dollar factory in Yokkaichi to tend to. I'm also hearing about Samsung ramping up production but no word as to any new factories beyond the ones it just finished in Texas.

Hard to say. You mileage may and will vary greatly. My Dell Vostro's screen died after 1 year and 9 months and the GPU after 1 year due to Nvidia's 8600M GT fiasco. I've met 2 other people on NBR who have the same Vostro and claim that their screens are still running strong after 2 and a half years.

I'm buying a Square Trade Warranty sometime in the next few weeks to ensure I get as much mileage outta this baby for at least 3 years.

You can download them from the HP website, but chances are they are the same, and might not have them all there. Just install over the Windows 7 drivers.

No, my Envy 14 is cool. Seriously, though, my point is if you want to save a few bucks and wait for who knows how long you do so at the expense of missing out on the benefits of SSDs during that time. If you don't have the cash then you have no choice but to wait.
